Didn't "obey" it the first time. Had a 4 cylinder 2 door Pontiac with a speedometer that only showed 85 mph.
Now I've got two cars with 4 times the hp, more cylinders and speedometers that go to 170 mph +. I can't drive......55!!! Well, I could and I do, sometimes. But damn it's tough. The BMW is only turning 2700 rpm at 100 mph. So, 55 mph it would be down around 1400 or so?? Last road trip (only 250 miles or so) I got 39.25 mpg doing 70 mph most of the way (and 100 mph for long enough to find out what kind of rpm it turned at 100. How many people really do the speed limit. Even when I'm doing 35 in a 35 I have people just blow by me like I'm peddling the damn thing. Had a guy in a small SUV pass me on the double yellow lines yesterday as I did 45 in a 45 in a residential section of town. |

Sure a 55mph minimum. I've gotten on the highway at <55mph so many times in the past few weeks.

We also need a law that permits roadside, extra-judicial executions of left lane campers.

No. That would be the biggest leap backwards ever.
We should have autobahn rules. Left lane for passing. Other lanes for people who aren't presently accelerating faster than surrounding vehicles. Also, the concept of a common speed limit applying to different drivers and vehicles is stupid. When I drove an early 2000's Corolla I dared not go over 85 in ideal conditions or I felt an astronaut upon reentry through the atmosphere. Now that I drive a Porsche 125 is completely safe on a highway in the left lane with good weather and visibility. |

I’m not passionate about much but you can shove that 55 shit straight up your cornhole!
|
|
I do 85-90 in a 70’back and forth to work every day. And I’m still getting passed.
These speed limits are based around semis and not real world vehicles. Now granted when I have my travel trailer behind be it’s a different story. |

Do the local LEAs need some revenue? That's all that a 55mph speed limit would do.

All interstates should be unlimited speed zones except in built up city areas.
All crashes involving excess speed with great injuries or loss of life should carry the same penalty as first degree murder for the person who caused the crash Interstate police should enforce left lane camping twice as hard as drug infractions, until people learn that the left lane is for passing only. Driving on the interstate carries risks, there are other ways to get where you want to go without using the interstate if you disagree with no speed limits. |

Obviously a thread to provoke responses which happens often here now

Nobody needs a 30 round clipazine that can shoot 3000 bullets a second and nobody needs a vehicle that can drive over 55 miles per hour. Come on man! Attached File

Quoted: Actually, the premise stated in my original post, it would be fewer laws, but ok... View Quote No. Your premise is to trade one stupid law for another. Net zero change in stupidity. The only thing I would support is half a job…repeal the stupid law and then never getting around to passing the replacement. But Government already proved unwilling to do a simple repeal. Proof: failure to repeal Obamacare. Every swamp creature in office insisted there had to be a replacement. To hell with that and to hell with more stupid laws. |

55 mph was a disaster. It took forever to travel. I remember driving on I-95 at 55 mph. It was torture.
Believe me. You don't want this. |

Anyone who thinks 55 on a nonresidential road is fast shouldn't be driving.

Not no, he'll no
Try driving 1500 miles at 55mph 3 day trip no thanks at 70mph its still a 2 day trip but my time is money and a day is $500min when doing something I don't want to do. That said people don't follow speed limits anyway. It would just result in more accidents due to more congestion. You need to be able to flow at a certain rate to move a certain volume through the same corridor. Baton rouge tried 55mph it was a nightmare they bumped it to 60mph and all of a sudden traffic was significantly less, 65mph even less. When they finish the 3 lane widening I think they will bump the speed limit up to 70mph most of the way through a save for the short section between the river and the 10/12 split |

Quoted: ...if the government removed CAFE standards? For a thought exercise, say the fedgov has determined that they could eliminate CAFE if a 55 mph standard was brought back. I know, the government doesn't give up power, but it's a thought exercise. Would you prefer to keep things as they are now, or would you support the speed limit? View Quote Heck no. I can't drive 55. And even if I could, I generally oppose Faustian bargains. |

No and the idea of 'trading" with the government whether it concerns cars, guns, etc sucks.
The government has too much power over my life. I don't intend to hand them any more. |

Like people would suddenly start driving 40 MPH slower than they drive now!
