It’s amazing the damage they can do. Drill right through a healthy tree.

This is the answer where I live.  I watched one that attacked a tree like a precision guided bomb.  Within 1 day he had the trunk wide open.

Pileated Woodpecker. Seen em do it many times. Looks like a chainsaw running with all the chips flying.

One literally tore apart a couple of rafters in my dad's motorhome shed going after boring bees.

Standing dead trees are a critical resource for lots of wildlife. If it isn't bothering anyone leave it. See if they can take it down on their own.

You know if they are in an area also by their call -

Microcephaly.

Can be caused by the Zika virus. But, this picture predates the discovery of that virus in Uganda.

Zika virus infection during pregnancy is a cause of microcephaly and other congenital malformations in the infant, including limb contractures, high muscle tone, eye abnormalities and hearing loss. These clinical features are collectively referred to as congenital Zika syndrome

holy crap, I didn't even see the feather. is that a pecker feather?
it looked like something with claws dug it out. I've never had any experience with woodpeckers, we have them around here but I didn't think they'd hollow out a dead tree at ground level.
