Pileated Woodpecker. Seen em do it many times. Looks like a chainsaw running with all the chips flying.
One literally tore apart a couple of rafters in my dad's motorhome shed going after boring bees. |

Standing dead trees are a critical resource for lots of wildlife. If it isn't bothering anyone leave it. See if they can take it down on their own.
You know if they are in an area also by their call -  Pileated Woodpecker Call |
