Every time I have a brief "maybe I should buy a revolver" moment, sanity prevails and I realize there's an auto that will do the job better.

I keep a revolver in my glove box, the LCR .39 seen in the lower middle below, partly because it is effective and partly due to cost if stolen...

I carried my little Harms-tuned 640 for a while, but times have gotten a little rougher than a 5-shooter is set up for.

Reloads need to be kept where your left hand can reach them. Practice reloading with the left hand. It takes a while to get the muscle memory down, but it's worth it in time savings. A couple decades ago I used to compete in a local pistol league. We shot the MLEOTC course of fire. I competed with a 686 bone stock except for the grips against dedicated PPC revolvers and semi-autos and finished the season in 3rd place. I practiced left hand reloads until I could reload as quickly as my fellow competitors shooting semi-autos. Seriously.

Currently, what is the best self defense round for a SP101? I have 125 grain Eldorado Starfire 38 special +P in mine that are about 20 years old. Probably need something more current. I know, go ahead and laugh.

I’m a sentimental guy who enjoys lever actions for fun, but it’s a semi-auto for carry and HD.
If a bad guy chooses to mug me, it will almost certainly be at a place of his choosing as he is an ambush predator, we have an entire thread about that. https://www.ar15.com/forums/general/Street-robberies-and-you-The-Basics/5-1285487/ I can’t control how many assailants there are, what they are armed with, or if I’m in a spot where fleeing isn’t a option. What I can control is my sidearm and reloads, and capacity rules out revolvers in my mind. Yes, maybe you are in Alaska and need a huge .454 for bears but in your average suburb, semi is king. |

Damn right they do. My latest love is a Ruger LCR in 9mm. 5 rounds of 147 grain HST in my pocket. It's what I carry when I'm home.
One word of caution, OP: I've been shooting revolvers since I was 6. 35 years. In 2002 I had a S&W that lost its timing and launched some lead and copper fragments back at me. Buried chunks of metal in my left ear and above my left orbital bone. Lots of blood, but no real damage. My gf dug em out with tweezers. But if I hadn't been wearing eye pro, I might be blind. I'd recommend you wear eye pro with revolvers. |

Shooting a full size .357 Magnum is a satisfying experience.
Much like a 1911 in .45 ACP. If you can't defend yourself with revolver, you're the deficient in the equation not the gun. |

I just ordered one of these:
$300 shipped was a bargain. Got to check out a few at a LGS and compared them to S&W/Rugers. For the money the quality isn't too shabby. Yeah it isn't Ruger/S&W Quality but a $300 357 Revolver seemed like a really great value. Definitely seemed better than the cheaper Rock Island/EAA Offerings. |
