In my case it was the early '70's.  A VERY different world from the one youngsters
grow up in today.

The Frito Bandito pencil topper (Very cool)!
[url]
"Wacky Packs" (What kid didn't have dozens of those pasted all over their shit in the early 70's?).
[url]
The "Swiss Army Knife" (Even if it wasn't really 'Swiss"), I carried one of these to class pretty much everyday (And my teachers knew it!) just like every other
10yr old boy back then and was never expelled. It was sort've expected that little boys would have one of these in their pockets at school.

Anyway, what did you carry?

10 yrs old would have been a Swiss Army knife and a daisy BB gun or wrist rocket. Probably some pogs or x-men cards too.

My 4th grade teacher was a gem in my mind. I was one of her favorites because of my success in the geography bee (one of get pet projects). One day I accidentally carried my SAK to school. Being the upstanding citizen that I was I informed her of my transgression. She said that it was no problem as long as I kept it in my pocket. That day I learned sometimes it pays to be a nerd and concealed means concealed.

I never had any friends or anything, so whatever I did probably wasn't "popular", but still. I was born in 84, so I was 10 in the mid 90's.

Swiss Army knife. Had to have one.  The real deal.

Always had a silver dollar in my pocket.

Always a a pack of either juicy fruit or cinnaburst. Never a big fan of bubbalicious or bubble yum unless it was cotton candy or grape. you weren't shit unless you had gum to share. Not the little pack, either. I'm talking the 15-stick pack.

The pens that had ten colors or whatever in them.

A cheap made in Taiwan folding knife with a ~4 inch blade, a large survival knife sans compass, you know the kind. Nunchucks (hey, I'm asian), a miniature PR24 type billy club my brother made for me in shop class on the sly, and a bunch of strike anywhere matches. All stuffed in a WWII canvas USMC Voyt pack.

I had, still have, a Dick Tracy pocket knife, compete with a whistle, magnifying glass, and glow in the dark scales. I broke the tip off the blade prying the clips off my model train tracks, otherwise it would be worth a good bit to collectors.

My Carbon Copy took his knife out to cut bales for the sheep, forgot it in his pocket, realized it at gym when they were going outside.

45Jr did the right thing, gym teacher did the political thing and got him a 3 day rip in the 4th grade.

That sucks. We live in a relatively small town, but my gut tells me that the outcome would be the same here. I'd be inclined to tell my boys to keep their traps shut.

... at 10, I was allowed to carry a big-ass knife (but for all different reasons we assume here), at 11 - I'd shown Dad proficiency with a .22LR bolt action; supervised (4H,FFL).  Next year (at 12) I was able to take said rifle out on my own to do whatever the fuck I wanted.

Still honor that responsibility to this very day

Lost many of them. My good glow in the dark one was saved for the halls at school. Prime bounce territory.

Just made me remember a kid who brought a reeking bag in.  Asked him what was in the damp bag...a head?

Yep!  He pulls out a bloody deer head lol.  (This was mid to late 80s)

Swiss Army Knife that my Grandma gave me, that had belonged to Grandpa.
Bazooka Joe
Couple bucks if I was lucky
Padlock, to deal the occasional 5th or 6th grader that wanted to take my lunch money.

Found an old .22 Derringer and a bulk pack of .22LR that belonged to my Grandpa. I kept it in a shoebox under a loose floorboard under my bed. Don't remember where that ended up lol.

Loadout could vary depending on what kind of juvenile delinquency me and my little adolescent dirtbag friends were doing that particular day - Bottle rockets, M80's, wrist rocket, BB gun, .22, etc.

I remember when one day of Grade School we all assembled in the cafeteria for the Duncan YOYO salesmen
to show up.  That was a fun day.

SUPER BALLS were pretty awesome too!
