Actually happened to me.
I was woken up at 1am by someone pounding on the door. I grabbed a 1911 I kept in the nightstand and went to the door. When I looked out I realized it was the police and I stashed the gun in the couch cushions. They were looking for a bear that had been seen in the neighborhood around 10am the day before. |

Quoted: I don't answer but I arm myself and sit in the dark to see what happens next. View Quote Absolutely wouldn't answer, not immediately at least. I'd be out in the living area with my carry piece and a streamlight handy, but not on. I'd make my way to the lower level and grab my 18.5" 12ga pump, most likely. I'd be on the doorbell camera and checking out the other perimeter cameras. At that point, I'd consider calling the police. If the threat breaches, fire. If not, wait for the cops to haul them away. |

I have a window in kitchen that opens to front porch, I address solicitors, home invaders, feds, JW’s, etc from there.
Brick backstop if needed. Dogs go nuts anytime someone approaches door. I’m not opening door at 0200. |

Last week
I wake up about 0430. I go to the kitchen to get some water. I see headlights coming down my driveway. I immediately think something has happened and it is a LEO. I go to a side window and look out where the person can't see me. Nope, not LEO. Person gets out and walks to my front door. Leaves a package. It is Amazon??? |

I just do the click-click-click BOOM and then go back to sleep.

Last (and only that I can remember) time this happened to me, I answered with my g17 in hand at low ready. Once I looked through the peep hole I saw it was a sheriff. He was standing back from the door with hands up on his chest rig.
I stuffed the glock into a drawer next to me and opened up. Turns out he was letting me know my garage door was open. Nice guy. |

I don't have a doorbell so I am thinking I would be extra on-alert if that happened.

Hell, it's not quite 9PM (typed 9MM before I realized it) and if someone comes to my door the pistol in the table by my chair will be in my right hand before I take a step towards the door.
I remember one night the doorbell rang pretty late and it was a local/county officer. He told me his name and asked me if it was my youngest son's truck sitting by the road a few miles from the house. He told me the model/color of the truck and I told him it sure sounded like my son's truck. I told him I didn't know the truck was there and I'd call my son to see what happened and if he was all right. Then I remembered the 9MM in my hand and asked the officer if he minded me turning around to put the pistol down before I invited him into the house. He got a funny look on his face and said, "Sure, sure, please do set it down." I set it on the stairs and picked up the phone to call my son. Found out they'd gone to school together. Oh, diesel having diesel issues. My son left the party he was at and had his buddy tow the truck home so the cops didn't have it towed (didn't get it far enough off the road (if you live in this area you know, most of the time, if you get it far enough off the road you're in the damn ditch or the woods, no berms on the roads around here unless it' s a 4 lane.) |

Check cams, get family in safe spot, armor, rifle, lie in wait.

Happened to me one time at 3am. By the time we came out sporting a 12ga and a M4 they had decided to leave.

I don my plate carrier, helmet, nods, battle belt, and HD rifle first. I intentionally skip putting on pants because I like the way the Velcro on my battle belt feels against my bare skin. Plus, an armor wearing, rifle toting, schlong swinging man, buys me an extra few seconds of shock should things dissolve into a gunfight.
The I sneak out the back door and creep around the front of the house ready for action. Obviously the wife is covering me during this movement. Or I do nothing, ignore it, and go back to sleep. No good is going to come from answering the door at 2am. |
|
I look at the dozen blink cameras I have around the perimeter and talk to them on the door bell cam with my weapon in hand.

Of course I'm going armed- either with a 12 gauge or 1911.
Also going to check the windows to get an ID before I even think about opening the door |

Do cloud based cams work if I cut your internet connection?
I would think a real threat would have disabled your super obvious glowing doorbell cam with a post it note. I keep looking for a quality peephole camera that has RTSP capability. Discreet cams are best cams. Axis makes one buts its pricey. |

Live on a dead end street with long, winding driveway with posted no trespassing signs. If you make to the house and I don't know you, damn straight I'm packing.
2AM, long arm in hand. |

My house is on a couple of acres, surrounded by a fence and two locked gates. There is a line of barbed wire at the top of the fence. If anyone comes to my door they must have wanted in pretty bad. I would grab a gun and not answer the door, but I would definitely check the cameras. I’d tell them (through the door) they should turn around posthaste and beat feet off my property.
I have a cute doorbell, it’s a little lizard. The only person that uses it is the exterminator. |

I don 't have a camera. So I'd grab a gun and see what's up, but not opening the door. I doubt anyone is coming through the door, but the dog would probably be on it before I pulled the trigger.

Quoted: Yep. I've been on the receiving end of the 2am knock before. I answered from inside, about 10' from the door and off to one side, with a rifle at low ready. "My car broke down, can I use your phone"... "No, but I'm calling the Police for you right now" Suddenly, they didn't seem so concerned about their broken down car, because they didn't reply and a car sped away from my driveway at high speed. Was pretty normal stuff living in Macon, Georgia. View Quote If the Ring is working and not obscured, I'll ask what they want - the way the entryway is setup, it is impossible for anyone to lurk out of sight of the door camera. if the camera is obscured, I'll probably call PD. The door and frame are reinforced, so they aren't kicking their way in. |
|
No, I don’t go to the door.
Is this 1965? WTF? I pick up my IPad and look to see who is at the door on the camera. Then I scan the property with the other cameras to see if they are alone. Why would I go to the door? It’s made of glass! |
|
Would see who it is. If I don't know them, No. If I do, then I'm finding out how many bodies I'm about help bury.
|
|
Ring doorbell. I grab my phone and look at who or what is there.
