Who are YOUR Top 5 gee-tar pickers. All music genres and styles apply...
mine are: Prince Stevie Ray Vaughan Jimmy Page Roy Clark David Gilmour *Honorary recognition goes to Billy Duffy (The Cult) Wat u gots..? |
|
Any top five list would have to include in no particular order:
Glen Campbell Roy Clark Chet Atkins Jerry Reed Andrés Segovia |
|
Eddie VanHalen
Stevie Ray Vaughn Eric Clapton Derek Trucks Mark Knopfler |
|
My subjective opinion:
1. Nuno Bettencourt (just the best of all worlds, heart, soul, speed, never over processed) 2. Zack Wylde (tone, harmonic master) 3. David Gilmour (such emotion) 4. Stevie Ray (just jammed, not clean, just put it out there raw) 5. Eddie Van Halen (he inspired everybody post 70's, and while I'm not a huge Van Halen fan you can't deny he's the king. ) |

Apart from the obvious answers that will fill this thread, I have always enjoyed some of the riffs Synyster Gates puts out

Jerry Garcia
Doc Watson BB King Eddie Van Halen David Gilmour Bonus picker-Pete Anderson These are my favorites. Not saying they are the best, I don't think it's possible to name the best. |
|
Elton John
Duke Ellington Stevie Wonder Jerry Lee Lewis Marty McFly |

EVH is the king. Period, end of discussion.
Clapton Hendrix SRV Joe Satriani |
|
Jimmy Page
Jimi Hendrix Eric Clapton Vicki Peterson (from the Bangles) Ivy Rorschach (Poison Ivy from the Cramps) |
|
How's anyone leave Jimmy Page out?Thread is a less objective survey of top guitarists, and more a list of personal faves.
Glad to see SRV is mentioned 90% of the time. I'm NOT a blues guy, but damn his Voodoo Child shows his diverse skill across the spectrum. |

Are we talking writing or playing? Yngwie can pick faster than those other guys can tap with 2 hands. Rising Force has him picking like 64th notes, faster than most people can hear.
He isn't really much of a composer, though. Yngwie Malmsteen - Rising Force - Solo only |
|
Eric Clapton
Jimi Hendrix Pete Townshend Eddie Van Halen Stevie Ray Vaughan |
|
|
I'd also add the guitar player for Boston, as well as the one for Steely Dan
|
|
Duane Allman
Stevie Ray Vaughn Mark Knofler Carlos Santana Dickie Betts |
|
Eric Johnson is also a better player than most of the ones mentioned so far. His music style wasn't as popular as some of the others. But technically a much better player.
Eric Johnson - Cliffs Of Dover - Live |
|
Question is too broad. Too many different styles of play, “best” is too broad and subjective.
Based on technical ability, EJ in the post above mine deserves recognition. There are a lot of really good, technical players. Influence? There are a few guitarists who changed the way the instrument is looked at in the context of making music. This is probably the most interesting list. |

In no particular order:
Santana Hendrix Van Halen Knopfler Clapton |
|
Favs since I"m not qualified to say who is "best".
Eddie Van Halen Tony Iommi Dave Mustaine Billy Strings That one Canadian drunk male prostitute. |
|
Jimmy Herring is who I enjoy seeing live the most, but widespread panic sucks my ass

Probably not a popular opinion, but strip away the genre they play and based off shear talent alone, my fav's are:
Roy Clark Hetfield (Rhythm, fight me) Jimmy Page John-5 Peter Green |
|
dark horse candidate
CHARO - William Clare Entertainment |

Where in the wide world of sports do you see [in my OP Thread] mention the word "best" guitarists? Asking for a friend.. You are, of course, correct. Point remains that “top 5” is a similarly complex judgement. Favorite to listen to? Doesn’t always correlate to “best”, or “top 5” Best technical player? Less ambiguous, but hard to evaluate because there are a shitload of excellent technical players, and for every one you can name, there is an unknown studio/session player that 99.9% of people never heard of that was just as good. Most influential? As I said in my edit above, this is the most exclusive list, but does influence = best? Does influence = top 5? |

Ah, the glory days of boomer rock...
In terms of technical proficiency, the top five guitarists of all time are probably all under 30 today. Kids learn techniques that didn't exist back then when they are 5Y/O Composition is a whole other question though. |
