Why is so much more of our carrier fleet based over on the Atlantic side? China ain't exactly going to attack from the east coast. And most of Europe is not a threat. Yes, there's Russia, but I think China is a more existential threat. And are our carriers too complex these days? Yeah, yeah, I know about all the high-zoot electronics and all, but when they get so complicated that they have to come home and sit for years to get fixed, they're not as useful as they should be. In WWII, there were enough specialists onboard these ships to fix damn near anything that broke or got shot up, and do it overnight while under attack. And we were turning out complete troop carrier ships in less than a day. Now it takes two years to refit and refuel a ship. View Quote |

We talked about the Nimitz boats as compared to the conventional ones at some length and naturally, top speed came up. He never gave me a number but he said that conventional carriers (with minimal escorts) used to head out first on a typical peacetime cruise and the rest of the battle group would catch up to it en route. He said the the nuke boats would let the battle group head out and then run them down on the way. I was like , then and finally . |

A nuke carrier can make wind across deck in still air to launch using the catapults.
They can even tolerate some tail wind and launch. They actual top speed is classified. We got to learn it when doing some SATCOM and other COMs (U2 data link) work for use on carriers. The Chief's mess is still the best on on the ship. They have a 'Come as You Are' section that allows less formal dress. As a civy I had to wear a tie and jacket to the officer's mess. Screw that after working 12 hours. |

It took the Navy 48 hours to get Yorktown ready to go after extensive damage from the battle of the Coral Sea. Yorktown was able to materially participate in the battle of Midway, although she was sunk after a heroic fight by her crew.

Yup, I knew they were Assault Ships and that they don't have near the amount of aircraft on them, but they do have a shit load of crayon munchers, choppah's and now (or soon) F35's. It makes for a well rounded package. Knowing quite a bit about Southern African military capabilities (I still have friends and family in the forces down there) leads me to the conclusion that a single WASP class ship with full complement can easily overpower any (probably all) of the militaries in Southern Africa (shitholes) with ease...not that it's an impressive feat, but in my feeble mind it's force projection. So now we talk about countries like NORK's, Iran, etc...and the WASP's make a lot of sense. View Quote |

View Quote Nimitz gave the Pearl Harbor yard 3 days to repair the Yorktown. https://www.defensemedianetwork.com/stories/youve-got-three-days-repairing-the-yorktown-after-coral-sea/ It took the Yorktown 18 days to return to Pearl Harbor. During that time the ship's repair crews patched up the flight deck and made other repairs. Only the most urgent repairs were made. Instead of individually fixing the hull’s ruptured seams, an enormous steel plate was welded over the damaged section. On the morning of May 30, more patched than repaired but fit enough to fight, Yorktown steamed out of Pearl Harbor. We don't need to overhaul our fleet of carrier like we are doing battle damage repair, we need the fleet repaired properly so that the repairs will last and the ship will be able to provide service for the next 25+ years. |
