Maybe his finger is broken, and somebody else's butt hurts.

Could still have involved slipping on a banana peel.

Go to a community college that does dental x-rays and get them to shoot it.   Should cost less than 100 bucks.   If they'll do it.

See, like I said in another thread, it pays to have friends who are dentists. Then you can post the xrays on arfcom and get them read.

woke up this morning with a hangover and with my right hand throbbing with pain.

the finger was huge, painfull and there was obvious crepitus.

i have broken 4 fingers in the past, 2 were xrayed, i am pretty sure it is broken. should i tape it to the finger beside of it?

ETA: what do you call the finger between the middle finger and the pinky?

John.

I call mine John.

At least go to an urgent care and get it xrayed for cheap... that won't cost thousands of dollars.

Then get an appointment with an ortho or hand surgeon as a follow-up.  That will cost you a hundred bucks or so.

The hands are what we call "high-dollar real estate."  For most people, their hands are their life... especially if you work with them.  At least go get some basic xrays.

This right here.  If it heals wrong, you're in trouble.

If you weren't intending to do anything, other than tape it, then why ask arfcom for advice?

In that case, just hit it with a hammer and knock the bone back in place.  That's 2legit 2quit, right there.

The main complication of a phalanx (finger) fracture is rotation of the bones on
either side of the fracture
, causing misalignment after healing. Not a problem
when your fingers are straight but when you make a fist, instead of all of your
fingers staying lined up,the rotation will cause the misaligned finger to go under
the fingers on either side, depending on which way it was rotated before it healed.

Hard to explain in words.

Correct.  A rotational deformity can be a significant problem, particularly for people who use their hands in their job.  You can't make a fist the same way once you have one.

Crepitus in a phalanx fracture? The OP doesn't mention the very obvious deformity that would accompany that. It seems more like a metacarpal.

OP,  get your hand looked at.

He said,
hand swollen
third finger swollen
crepitus
no mention of deformity

Several phalanx fractures could conceal the deformity, but the adjacent metacarpals would also do that. And if he hit it with enough force to break a finger...

Meh... I'm used to it.  Every shift I work, I get patients who outright ignore what I tell them (generally to their detriment).

Whatever.  It's their body, they can do what they want with/to it.

Ya know what, for that kinda dough, you can
Fly to Thailand for $1,500
Get treated at a decent hospital for $200
and still have $1300 left over for a TOTALLY AWESOME WEEKEND in Pattaya.

(*) hangover, loss of memory, and sore rear end optional
