I went to bleed the brakes on my explorer and got grease and grime all over my hands. I was wearing rubber gloves but they tore and didn't realize it until too late. Now there is black car grease and grime under my nails and ground into my skin. I used lava soap and a scrub brush and the shit is still there. Even scraping with a knife blade leave the nails looking dirty.
Is there a tier 1 method of cleaning this shit off? |

Brush and dawn dish soap. Gojo or another hand cleaner with an abrasive. Also know that grease can stain your hands and if so you won't get it off because there's nothing to get off anymore. Hope you aren't a chef.

D-lead works really well. It's cleaned my hands spotless after being soaked in hydraulic fluid, grease, and dirt.

Hand wash the dishes in the sink. Your hands will be clean.
Use dishwashing soap, Dawn as mentioned above. Warm soapy water. Let your hands soak for 5 or 10 minutes. Scrub, rinse. Clean. Should get the grease under the nails as well. |

If all else fails KOH (potassium hydroxide) dilute solution then follow it up with an acid to deactivate the solution acetic acid(vinegar) works. It will get into your cuticles and under your nails and break down the grease. Many times your spray degreasers will have potassium hydroxide in them and they work well.

Pro tip, before greasy work begins, rub hands with Dawn like you would with lotion. Let it dry. Makes grease removal easier.

I occasionally use mineral spirits to get nasty stuff off of my hands on job sites. Soak your hands with it, scrub, then wash hands well with soap and water afterwards.
Downside is it can dry your hands out a bit, but nothing too extreme. |

Suave shampoo. Or similar cheap brand, has to be shampoo not conditioner.
Nothing else works for me |
|
If you don't have any Goop, GoJo, orange stuff, etc. handy, try hand lotion.
Next time you work on a greasy thing, apply hand lotion before you touch the grease. It makes cleaning up a whole lot easier. |

I have a bar of Lava and a bottle of Gojo. Between them, they have always worked. Might need a stiff brush of some kind to get stuff from around your fingernails.

Time is the only thing I've found to be 100% effective, especially when dealing with nastiness that's been cut with a solvent. That shit gets into every crack and crevice on my hands.

Make hamburgers. The animal fat melts the grease and animal fat comes off easy.

Fingernail brush and soap
Or let your husband do it next time |

View Quote Pro tip, using Dawn for grease removal will lead to dermatitis. Don’t do this ^^^^^ We had guys in the shop wash their arms and hands every day with Dawn. They all ended up with dermatitis. It sucks all the oils out of your skin. |

Tub-o-towels. Amazing product. Cleans up the nastiest auto grease and also carbon crap after cleaning guns or bbq grill.

Powdered laundry detergent. It will also let you know of any small cuts you have that may have gone unnoticed.

Maybe I should just get better gloves, too. No shit I am scraping at it with a pocketknife blade and it's not working. |

OP just let your hands get some much needed grease to help leather them up for christ sake.
