The scene where he is in his bedroom practicing his dancing for the talent contest makes the whole movie worth it.

Didn't crack a smile during the whole thing and then I nearly died laughing at that scene.

a bit of back ground on that scene.

Right before this... if you watch. You can see the guy in the blue shirt spit out his piece of steak and put it back on the plate.

The actor is a vegan and refused to swallow the steak.

People who don't like Napoleon Dynamite probably think The Big Bang Theory and Two and A Half men are the epitome of comedy.

It doesn't have to be funny in the moment. It's all about gleaning out the phrases and applying them to your daily life.

I went to school in semi-rural Idaho. It was like looking at old yearbooks.

Growing up in Rural Montana, this movie reminds me a lot of home.

Just how everything is dated, as the internet was just starting to be a thing this is how the mid 1990's were.

Everything in that movie take me back to about 1994-96 timeframe.

One hospital I cover is in a small Idaho town. My ID pic is 8 years old with me 30+ pounds heavier. The nurses have suggested I do an Uncle Rico glamour shot for an updated pic.

That's one reason it's funny.

It's also a great caricature of Idaho.

When Napolean is wearing the Rick's College shirt....lmfao.

this was my experience. I *hated* this movie the first time.  three days later "hey, I caught you a delicious bass"

I was a bit tainted, I grew up in Idaho and half my graduating class was this kid. It felt like a documentary to me.

I work with people from Preston ID.  Yea, it's more like a documentary.

I could, and did. Quite possibly in the top 5 worst movies ever made. Perhaps the only movie made that successfully went start to finish without a plot of any kind.

Napoleon Dynamite cost only $400,000 to make and grossed over $46 million worldwide.

The movie was very profitable when compared to big box office losers.

Remember the 80's comedy 'Real Genius' starring Val Kilmer?  Uncles Rico (Jon Gries) was Lazlo, the creepy long haired hermit that lived in the secret passage in Mitch's closet.

Would need to know the OP's general age before I responded.  As for me a teenager in the 80's that movie is funny as hell and hits home on so many levels.  Laugh out loud funny in my case.

'Taxi Driver' didn't have a plot.

'Raging Bull' didn't have a plot.

'Goodfellas' didn't have a plot.

'Casino' didn't have a plot.

Though I suppose if you were extremely liberal with what constituted "a plot of any kind" they might have.

It helps if you are familiar with the Utah/Idaho subculture.  A lot of subtle jokes that people not familiar with the area won't get.

What makes it fun is the absurdity of it all. They are taking a jab at small communities in middle America.

I watched it the first time and sort of thought "That was weird, but interesting" I watched it again later and laughed hysterically.

Everyone knows a guy like Uncle Rico

That's it.

That's what makes it funny.  It's not about an intriguing story line...it's about watching how those slightly odd characters interact with life.

They absolutely NAIL the idiosyncratic "colorful local character". So much so, that I can think of someone I know or knew personally that matches each character in the movie.

The liger, for example, is a joke that has extra flavor if you know the region.

I had a vehicle breakdown in the hills near ligertown, at night, when those animals were loose. I hadn't heard about it, so was just hanging out outside my vehicle in the dar for an hour or more awaiting the tow truck.

My stepdad is from Preston. One of his nieces' house is in the background as Napoleon is giving Kip a lift to the Rex-quan-do.  Every year when we go up to Idaho in the summer we usually have to go thru there on the way to his Family reunion. GOOOOSH!
