I don't know what loads the NYPD uses, but the article states that 4 out of 9 shots fired were found lodged in the jacket. Pretty surprising to me, that any 9mm load could be stopped by a canvas jacket. Wednesday morning was cool in NYC, but not that cold, so he could not have been wearing that heavy a jacket. Note: this is not a "OMG, a jacket can stop 9mm!!" post. The link shows a picture of the deceased bleeding out under a sheet. http://nypost.com/2016/05/19/nypd-checking-ammo-after-knifemans-jacket-stops-cops-bullets/ |

What happened to the other five? Were they inside bystanders? How far did those penetrate?
One tourist was grazed, no one else hurt. The suspect with the knife was shot and died.

Unless the guns failed to cycle the ammo isn't defective unless they're using some idiot uber-light bullet.
Rounds striking the ground or other obstacles before hitting? |
And yet another innocent bystander all but gunned down by a stray NYPD bullet Is that like dept policy or something?

Underloaded 9mm ammo that can be stopped by a denim jacket may be the only thing that can project the general public in New York from NYPD marksmanship.

From the article:
Four of the shots that cops fired at a madman waving a knife in Midtown failed to penetrate his jacket — which was not bullet-proof — and the NYPD will now check the weapons for malfunction, law enforcement sources told The Post. “The bullets we have may be defective and that’s very disturbing,” one source said. “When we fire our weapons we want to make damn sure that our bullets hit our target – neutralizing our target.” A sergeant and an officer fired a total of nine rounds at 46-year-old Garry Conrad Wednesday, with one of the shots killing the depressed Broadway stagehand who refused to drop the blade at West 49th Street and Eighth Avenue. Four of the bullets got lodged in Conrad’s Carhartt jacket, sources said, adding that he was not wearing bulletproof vest. |

Hmm I seem to remember reading that they use 9mm 124 grain gold dots, I could be wrong.

When I first signed up here I remember a thread on a news article about a pair of denim blue jeans deflecting a 9mm bullet.
Back in the late 70s the Troopers here shot some guy wearing a down coat and it stopped 15 out of 16 shots.
9mm. |
How does a round so weak it won't go through a jacket still allow the gun to cycle?
Carhartt needs to look into this, too. Maybe they've discovered something superior to kevlar. |
A heavy Carhartt is a very dense sumbitch, though not that dense. Of course a shot that passes through the hood hanging down and then into the back or through a loose sleeve before a torso hit might need to pass through three full layers of shell and insulation, and that is a whole lot of fabric. 4 of 9 shots going the long way through without touching skin is pretty unlikely though.

Last time I heard they were issued Speer Gold 124 gr. JHP 9mm+P. The entire department switched to Speer after the Amadou Diallo shooting where Anti-crime was getting hit with their own ricochets of Winchester 115 gr. FMJ off of the the steel door frame.
My guess is a bad lot of ammo. |
Wonder if they are using the Gold Dots G2. That failed quite a few expansion test before it was modified with deeper skives.
Well, Carhartt prices just went up now that all the aspiring rappers will be wearing them again.
Can't they just issue them some of those teflon-covered boolits?
At this moment, 4 out of 9 people wearing Carhart are saying "hold my beer"
So my Carhartt jackets are 44.4% bulletproof? If I wear 2, 88.8%!!!!!
Did somebody take a simunitions gun + ammo as their duty weapon? Even .380 can punch through a jacket.
Well shit, I just started pocket carrying a .380 since we're doing a lot of expansion work at my job, which requires me to lift my arms all the way up frequently while setting shelves, thus exposing my belt line. I figure the .380 is better than nothing.
I'll be back to carrying my .40 on Saturday, or if I knock shit out quick tomorrow morning, I'll put it on when I go home for lunch. |
