I was gifted this for my bday.

Not sure how this will go but I will try my best.

You have all of the parts so that's a good start. Dust it off and see what the caps look like.

The plug for the electrical outlet looks scary.

Oh it's been cut off already.

First thing to go

Here is what some of the wiring inside looks like.

It will all get replaced.

I much prefer old electronics to tinker with.

My Compaq Deskpro 286 motherboard I was able to easily diagnose and fix it when the keyboard stopped working.

A pico fuse blew and was easily replaced.

It’s old. Get an adjustable isolation transformer, or an adjustable AC power supply to creep up on supply voltage, so not to shock the tubes before they warm up.

Do you make use of the light-bulb in series with the primary to help protect againt huge inrush currents?

No I have not.

I just bring it up slowly and keep an eye on the mA meter.

While I wait for parts to arrive I guess I'll do some work on the cabinet.

Bottom is a bit warped and missing a support wedge or whatever you call those things.

I used a press to push the pieces back together and glued.

I didn't have any wood laying around so I bunched up a lot of wooden BBQ skewers and wood glued them together to make a new support

I also glued down this top corner. The vernier was starting to lift.

No after pic. I think you get the idea

A little bit more gluing.

Very cool.  I've got an old Philco radio at home I'd love to get working again.  It's a console type with world band.

@baxt3r

Nice!

What model is it?

That’s so cool op! I have my dad’s GE X371 that I have hauled around my entire adult life. It was used as a piece of furniture for ever until this year. I found a local shop to fix it and I just got it back about two weeks ago. I’m blown away by it. I never expected it to sound so good.

They added a Bluetooth sound board to it that works perfectly on the Phono setting. I’m able to stream to it and enjoy it as much as possible. I plan to hook up a wire antenna to try out the shortwave radio at some point.

Good luck with your project!

Looking good. Removing those caps can be a job.  I just ordered a slew of caps for my project. Seems I always need a value I am out of.

Crap pic.

Added a fuse holder since these do not have one.

I think I'm done under here for now.

Need to add the power cord and the preselect switches back but I want to check the top to see what is needed.

Good enough for me.

I put a coat of satin black on the transformer and will paint the top and back of the chassis after the unit fires up.

If it fires up.

That little piece of white hard stock under that coil is to make it more stable. The tubing the wires are wrapped around is starting to come apart and it's a little floppy.

Replaced 2 of the 3 plate wires.

I didn't really want to dig into that one IF transformer to swap the 3rd one out.

Putting the preset switches back in.

Here is the speaker.

It's not the original unit and it's a tad beat up.

I'll have to see if it works and if it does try and do some cone repair to it.

Looks good. For that crunbling inductor/coil form I wonder if some super thin 'superglue' could be applied lighty to the coil to soak in and firm it up?
