I have a 2019 Golf R variant, the wagon.
The 7 speed DSG is fantastic but I do miss driving a manual sometimes. It's very easy to mod them to 400-450 HP and still be reliable. My only gripe is it needs decent speakers and better sound deadening, which will be fixed soon. With the suspension in comfort mode it's very easy to forget what its capable of. The wife likes to embarrass Porsche drivers with it. |

I got a 19 GTI earlier this year and love it. My only concern is I may move to snow country and wish I had gotten the R for AWD.

2016-R 6MT here. The DSG is faster 0 > 60, but it is not how fast you get 0 > 60, but how much fun you have getting there.
My previous car was an STI. There is no comparing the fit and finish of a Subaru v. VW. A WRX/STI is a great car for a young'un that wants a cheap car. The -R is a hot rod for adults. DVC_117, mine is Tornado Red too. |

I've got a 2019 that looks just like the OP. The DSG also has launch control...it's fun.

There is a British racing green R that’s been showing up around town lately. I still think that custom paint options they had going was pretty damn cool. It’s a shame that they allowed the dealers to waste their allotment by letting them choose the color instead of the customer.

I love MY A3 and the GTI but going in, you should know the cost. There is an embedded flash count and... they check the size of the flash in memory, if it doesn't match, your car gets flagged and no warranty.
The engineering is overdone at times. I had a balance shaft fail when an oil screen / check valve failed in the cam bridge. Same thing can jam up a tensioner. They are a ton of fun though. Just know what you are going into. |

What are your thoughts on the digital dashboard? With the electrical issues my vw’s have had I’d be nervous to have the entire display be digital.

The R's are awesome. The 2.0tsi is one of the better motors VW has made. I have a mk7 gti and just from a jb4 tuner I jumped to 300hp. Not a lot compared to my rx7 but for its size it turns it into a little beast.

I test drove a manual 2019 for the hell of it and it was so damn slow it boggled my mind.
Car needs more boost from the factory and fewer doors. |

I think there is a healthy dose of supply and demand there that the current generation of R's won't see. Even Subaru is seeing the same thing with their current generation of STI. The volume sold has increased which has greatly increased the availability on the used market and lowered the price of all of them. I'd say VW is in line with the current crop of hot hatches, with the Type R and the RS holding their value slightly better than the Golf R and STI. YMMV based on market ofc. 19 DSG Here
I was originally considering the S5 or RS5 sportback. Given I drive 40k miles a year, I tested an s3 on a whim and ended up with the R. Digital Dash is great, although not as nice as Audi. On the flip side I would say finishes and the cabin are a little nicer on the VW than the Audi. I see a ton of other R s in my AO, mostly older professionals that use them as highway machines. I think VW is targeting a different group than the sti/GTI /type R crowd. It’s German and it requires German maintenance... at least the labor rate is the cheapest of the Germans. |

I picked up a 16 R DSG in lapiz blue like the OP's pic a couple months ago. Super fun car.
My brother has a 16 GTI that's stage 2 tuned right now. It's a screamer. He'll be dropping in a bigger turbo to go to 450hp soon. It will be nuts. |

I owned a 15 for a while. If you spend a couple grand and take it to stage 2, it will put up supercar numbers. Of course it can't compete on the big end, but I don't know anywhere you can drive on the street at 100mph. 0-60 under 4 seconds with a tune and a couple bolt on. View Quote |

I drove one 2 weeks ago with the DSG. Its very fast, the 0-60 time is like 4.5 seconds. Think about it - that little car, AWD and 300HP. Handles like its on rails and it sticks like nobody business. The thing that hesitated me is its $41K. Thats a lot of cabbage. Yes, the R's have strong resale value but STILL 41K FOR A GOLF. I have had a bunch of VWs including a GTI, they are indeed fun to drive. For a little more money (like 50K) you can pick up a used Boxster/Caman with low mileage. As great as the R is, its no Porsche. For less money you could buy a GTI with no AWD and less HP. Than there is Subaru. Just as a sidetone - with the R's there is no sunroof available AT ALL. Some bullshit why the certification of the body with the engine for the govmt. Who buys a 41K car without a sunroof? View Quote I want more headroom and no leaks. |
