Yeah, I wonder how many they are actually selling. But IMHO, if this is like a GTI on steroids, it might actually be worth it.

They're selling enough the R went from limited run cars (5,000) to full production vehicles.

get your 19 while you can, they're going away for a while...

nice cars, I like em, the active suspension is great..

I have a 2019 Golf R variant, the wagon.

The 7 speed DSG is fantastic but I do miss driving a manual sometimes. It's very easy to mod them to 400-450 HP and still be reliable. My only gripe is it needs decent speakers and better sound deadening, which will be fixed soon. With the suspension in comfort mode it's very easy to forget what its capable of.

The wife likes to embarrass Porsche drivers with it.

2016-R 6MT here.  The DSG is faster 0 > 60, but it is not how fast you get 0 > 60, but how much fun you have getting there.
My previous car was an STI.  There is no comparing the fit and finish of a Subaru v. VW.   A WRX/STI is a great car for a young'un that wants a cheap car.   The -R is a hot rod for adults.

There is a British racing green R that’s been showing up around town lately. I still think that custom paint options they had going was pretty damn cool. It’s a shame that they allowed the dealers to waste their allotment by letting them choose the color instead of the customer.

10 year power train warranty and Albert Beirmann working his magic on this car is nice.  The only ugly hot hatch to me is the Type R.  I usually love Honda but just no.  The golf R is very expensive and looks very muted to me.  Looks are subjective of course.

I am not interested in a awd hatch.  Adds a bunch of weight, I want light as possible.  That’s partly how Honda made the type r such a destroyer of track times.

I love MY A3 and the GTI but going in, you should know the cost.  There is an embedded flash count and... they check the size of the flash in memory, if it doesn't match, your car gets flagged and no warranty.

The engineering is overdone at times.  I had a balance shaft fail when an oil screen / check valve failed in  the cam bridge.  Same thing can jam up a tensioner.

They are a ton of fun though.  Just know what you are going into.

I think AWD plays nicely into what a hot hatch is. They are the definition of a "do everything" vehicle. I can take it across the country in comfort, I can hit the tracks with it the next day, and I can get through the winter season with a smile on my face. Coming from a higher powered FWD car, I can appreciate the addition of AWD nearly every day I drive my car.

I think there is a healthy dose of supply and demand there that the current generation of R's won't see. Even Subaru is seeing the same thing with their current generation of STI. The volume sold has increased which has greatly increased the availability on the used market and lowered the price of all of them.

I'd say VW is in line with the current crop of hot hatches, with the Type R and the RS holding their value slightly better than the Golf R and STI. YMMV based on market ofc.

I can definitely understand that.  I just prefer more power, and 300+hp in a FWD car is usually a traction nightmare or a torque steery mess so I went with an AWD car.  I think the Type R is the only FWD performance car that has the torque steer situation sorted out.

The R's are awesome. The 2.0tsi is one of the better motors VW has made. I have a mk7 gti and just from a jb4 tuner I jumped to 300hp. Not a lot compared to my rx7 but for its size it turns it into a little beast.

I am shocked how well my RS has held it's value.  Price in 2017 was $36k.  Average price of a used one with similar miles and options is $32-33k.

I was prepared for the worst after my previous Focus ST depreciated about $10k in 2 years ($27k to $17-18k).

There's probably not a bunch of clean low mile 04's on the market. After 15 years a lot of them are wrecked clapped out high mileage hooptys that have been boy racered out by multiple owners. Clean unmolested examples with low miles are going to be harder to come by but they're not that expensive last I looked.

19 DSG Here

I was originally considering the S5 or RS5 sportback. Given I drive 40k miles a year, I tested an s3 on a whim and ended up with the R.

Digital Dash is great, although not as nice as Audi. On the flip side I would say finishes and the cabin are a little nicer on the VW than the Audi.

I see a ton of other R s in my AO, mostly older professionals that use them as highway machines. I think VW is targeting a different group than the sti/GTI /type R crowd.

It’s German and it requires German maintenance... at least the labor rate is the cheapest of the Germans.

It checks a lot of boxes for a $30k car.  It should be compared to the GTI, not the R.  It looks like a fun car to rip around in.

Also Hyundai's statements (and backing them up) that certain mods and tracking the car won't void the warranty are a huge plus.

I drove one 2 weeks ago with the DSG. Its very fast, the 0-60 time is like 4.5 seconds. Think about it - that little car, AWD and 300HP. Handles like its on rails and it sticks like nobody business. The thing that hesitated me is its $41K. Thats a lot of cabbage. Yes, the R's have strong resale value but STILL 41K FOR A GOLF. I have had a bunch of VWs including a GTI, they are indeed fun to drive.

For a little more money (like 50K) you can pick up a used Boxster/Caman with low mileage. As great as the R is, its no Porsche.

For less money you could buy a GTI with no AWD and less HP. Than there is Subaru.

Just as a sidetone - with the R's there is no sunroof available AT ALL. Some bullshit why the certification of the body with the engine for the govmt. Who buys a 41K car without a sunroof?

Not to mention a top speed of 155+. Though it seems slow because the turbo is linear.  Unlike the STI, where you press the gas wait, wait, wait > damn neck snapping acceleration.  In fact the December issue of EVO, knocked the -R because there is no drama with it.  "It goes fast easily and very fast very easily. It is mildly frustrating to see a corner approaching and daring to think the chassis is going to come alive, but instead the R just turns and grips, dispatching the bend with ruthless efficiency."

+1 on never owning another car with a sun roof.    The sunroof on my Subaru RS-2.5 whistled like a banshee over 130mph.  I ended up duck taping it.

For $1000 less the GTI has more room, better gas mileage,  better fit and finish, and is only a tenth of a second slower to 60 than the Veloster despite the Veloster claiming 50 more horsepower.  Plus it's ugly.

It's a funny thing, I've read more than once about the MKVII GTI that it was "too good" or "too refined."  Even this article, https://www.thedrive.com/new-cars/28844/2019-hyundai-veloster-n-vs-2019-vw-golf-gti-comparison-review-two-hot-hatches-blitz-the-track, includes the phrase, "Despite showing tremendous capability and German-like precision, the rollercoaster felt more like a technical exercise than a quest for fun."
