2022 1,000 mile running challenge (Page 3 of 18)

15.1 + 1 / 205 My wife asked me to take the puppy on a short run after my long run and my middle daughter invited herself along, which we awesome. First race, a 20k, is next Saturday. What could go wrong on my second-ever time on trails? |

If not super technical, you will probably do very very well with your road racing background. Watch for rolled ankles though. |

That, and a have to concentrate so I don't roll an ankle |

My weekly miles will be up a bit until then, and then I'll drop back to about 20/wk after the race. Probably. Until I start amping it up for another Octoberfest Half. |

10.05 / 247 5x 5 minute intervals at about 1-hour race effort, but with triple the usual rest between as I have a trail 20k Saturday. Felt really smooth, it seems my fitness is coming back nicely. This trail run is on trails that are usually reserved for motorbikes, etc. - as far as I know this will be the first time anyone has ever been able to run on them. The website mentioned "course maps coming soon" so I asked about this and was told "oh, that's for next year. Just show up and enjoy the adventure". Alrighty then, this should be fun! |

2.09 + 12.62 + 1.55 / 268 Had a blast during my first trail race. I usually run around sections and might make 6 90° turns per run, but there's no way of knowing how many twists and turns there were in that course. Something tells me I'm going to be sore as hell tomorrow morning. |

Something tells me I'm going to be sore as hell tomorrow morning. Was there a lot of elevation change? And, how rough was it? The trails around me are really rocky. I won't run them. The altimeter in my watch logged 721' of elevation gain, but I don't think there was a single climb of more than 20-30' - the whole thing was constantly up and down. The trails were motorbike trails (runners had never been allowed on it before) and were a bit of a mix of surfaces. Some was hardpacked like a country dirt road, there were some very small areas of just rock, a few places with baseball-sized ankle breakers (these almost entirely in a narrow channel of a trail that I avoided stepping in), and some areas with very, very loose dirt (all of these in steep uphill sections). Plus the usual smatterings of branches and roots covering the trail at times. I didn't have any real issues during the race, but afterwards my left calf was a bit sore/tight and even today it still is a bit plus I have just a bit of tightness/soreness around my hips in the stabilizer muscles. Nothing that inhibits running at all, but when I'm not moving (blasted desk job!) things tighten up some and the walking isn't too comfortable. Given that I'm used to running in straight lines down country roads and only making 90* turns, this was a massive change for me: Rose Rock 20k. 12.16 / 294 Felt really good overall, though there was a bit of soreness lingering. |

| 5/81. Playing catch up, only 15 miles behind where I need to be. Should be able to fix that this month. |

At least I can now jog for a minute at a time with a few minutes break. |
