Last milestone for the year. Crossed 3500 miles this morning. Will probably coast into the end of the year and start 2026 strong.

Long time listener and first time caller here.

I stumbled across this thread about mid-year and it's been both educational and motivating to keep at the running goal.  I've re-discovered running the last few years after about 20 years of any kind of serious running effort.  Yearly mileage total has increased from <200 in 2022, 400 in 2023, 800 in 2024, and I just crossed over 1200 recently.

Just wanted to sneak in before year's end to not only say thanks for the motivation, but also great job to everyone who I've seen working toward various goals.

Fellas, just saw this thread and its awesome!

I was unable to run a 1/4 mile in May, but I bought a Garmin watch , did some treadmill running at first that I didnt log miles on, but it got my confidence up.  Once I started running outside, I decided that its for me -- Im hooked.  Ive started training for the Shamrock half mararthon on March 22nd in VA Beach now.

Im behind everyone for this year, but Ill try to catch up with you guys for next year!

Anything is better than nothing! Half marathon is a fun distance. Good luck training for it and make sure you post your mileage in the 2026 thread.

My Garmin watch changed my fitness path, I never take it off and it forces me to be honest. Most people will distort the truth to look better or appear to be an outlier(i cant lose weight, nothing works crew). I am just a bozo on the bus and not special....so i work my ass off to maintain a healthy weight and my progress is measurable....the last year I have averaged 16k steps a day, ran 1k miles, my average weekly HR is sub 50. At 37 It feels like I'm aging in reverse.

Quitting drinking also made a massive impact...I understand why people always told me alcohol and fitness do not go together. They were right.

Yes, 1500 miles is a reasonable goal since I've been averaging >30 miles per week over the last 4 months.

My more important 2026 goal is to incorporate more structure into my running.  I've been one of those runners who just laces up and heads out onto the road with only an occasional plan for the day.  I'm sure I've done a lot of grey-area runs over the last few years.

I've only really started looking at HR data the last few months and have been focusing on truly keeping easy runs easy and hard runs hard.  Quality over quantity.  I've started laying out a Daniels and Chat GPT plan for the first quarter of 2026.  Also want to include strength training for running performance.  I've been neglecting that.

Ultimately I'd love to knock some more time off of my 5k, 10k, and 1 mile.  I have not run a real race in over 15 years and would like to be age-group competitive.  Also been thinking about doing a half.  I've literally only done 13.1 miles once (2024) during just a training run just to see if I could do it.

My usual 5k lunch run.  Warm here, wanted to do a recovery run but ran just a little faster than I should have, 4 out of 10 effort.  Felt like it was harder than it should be but my heart rate stayed low the whole time.

Ive got to dial in my recovery and learn to train like Im not 20 years old.  Hard to do that sometimes when you feel like you are running too "slow".  Nevermind thats the whole point of a recovery run.

Similar story for me as a few other recent posters in this thread. Couldn’t run more than a minute or two in April. I’ve slowly worked my way up to 20 or so miles a week, and hope to continue the progress next year with a goal of 1000 miles! Looking forward to the 2026 thread, and hoping to do a half and full marathon by the end of 2026

This is my lowest total per year since 2015. All other years starting in 2016 were between 604 and 1210.

I signed up for The Woodlands Marathon (half marathon) at the end of February. My training was on track to do the full marathon until late November. I sold my house and spent several weeks moving. But, the good news is that my realtor is a runner and agreed to sign up for this half. So, other than you guys, I officially have a running buddy.

Looking forward to next year…

So now that I have a good cardio baseline, how do I fold other activities into my fitness routine without eating into more hours per week? I love how I physically feel with never being short of breath, able to keep up with my teenagers on outings of any length, etc. but the whole exercise thing roughly takes up 2 hours per day (traveling to/from trailhead, exercise, cooldown, cleanup/prep for next day). I'd like to get into some strength training and have been eyeing a functional trainer/power rack but I can't commit more time per week. Is running 3x per week (vs. 5-6x) going to negatively affect my cardio levels? FWIW, I have no 5-10K, 1/2 marathon goals. I just like feeling like I do presently.

Yesterday: 2 / 3,463

About 7 weeks ago my daughters got bronchitis, missed a couple days of school with fevers then developed a cough. Somehow I skipped the fever/feeling like garbage part and skipped straight to the cough. I've been dealing with that cough for a solid 6 weeks now and with no real improvement finally went to the doctor. Steroids/antibiotics. No sign of pneumonia. I know from past experience that antibiotics absolutely wreck my running performance and endurance, so I'm only doing shorter easy runs until they clear out of my system.

New thread will be up tomorrow.

Been there! Kinda am still there, actually.

Where I'm living there really are no runners other than jr. high/high school kids and to go into "the city" for a group LR it's at minimum a 30 minute drive just to get there. Add in the drive back, socialization before/after actually running, the group not starting until I might have been done with the run solo, and that 2 hour run could take up an entire morning. As such, I do all of my runs directly from home. I have a loop through town for lower intensity workouts, can get to the track for fast stuff, and head to gravel roads outside of town for standard runs.

Last year I sacrificed my side of the garage for a rack/cable machine so I didn't have to even make the short drive to wait for the same simple equipment at the local gym.

Dropping your running frequency and volume by that much will also drop your cardio abilities some, but if you don't have any performance goals there it likely won't be much, if any, of an issue. Even 3x per week is more than most people out there.

Just cutting out as much of the "non-activity" time from your athletic pursuits is probably your best bet here. Run from home if you can, lift at home, etc. so you can devote that time towards actually running/riding/lifting. Yes, it's "lonely" compared to perhaps meeting someone for a run or lifting in a gym with other people, but something has to give.

Running on a TX beach this week. I go into the wind on the way out. How much does the wind factor into your route? When street running in my neighborhood, the wind isn't a consideration. But, on the beach where I can go until it's time to turn around, the wind plays a role. Yesterday, going into a 25+ mph quartering wind was pretty sucky, but the return was almost peaceful.

Zoomfly 6 are some of my favorite shoes. I use them for tempo runs and slower runs and they do well at both. On my second pair and they will definitely stay in my rotation.

For me it factors in quite a lot. I'm in a rather rural area with straight gravel roads that intersect every mile, with exactly zero wind breaks in most places. I've absolutely been known to cherry-pick my routes so that they're crosswind, especially in winter.

I hate the wind for sure.  I would rather run in the rain.  The local high school near me has the bleachers and buildings that seem to act like a wind tunnel.  It just knocks you down.  As a side note, the wind resistance varies with the square of the speed, so twice the wind speed is a 4x increase in resistance.

3.98 today to finish at an even 1215.00.

2025 was solid to get within 80 seconds of my lifetime 5k PB and actually did improve my lifetime PB for a 10k by over a minute.

Going to really give Jack Daniels a solid dedicated effort for Q1 2026 to see if he can help me improve those numbers further.

Congrats to you guys for putting in all those miles.
I’m done for the year and fell 2.6 miles short of my personal goal.
I went from a fat couch potato in May to running 6 miles fairly easily.
Thanks for the motivation to help me get my numbers up and I’m looking forward to making the 1k mile club for 26
It’s a special year for me and I have to make it.
