2025 1,000 mile running challenge (Page 4 of 24)
| 8.9/193. Last big speed run as I start my taper. I'm ready for it. Not posting as much. Still trying to get my leg workouts done 4x a week. Slowly coming to grips that I'm actually going to have to show up to this marathon and run it in a few weeks. It's hard to believe. I'm not trained up where I would like to be, but I'm finishing that damn race that's for sure. |

Maybe even the last 10 days. |

3.65/90 Cranking daily mileage up slightly (3.2 > 3.65). Goal is to stay in and rack up as much Zone 2 in 1 hr./day as possible with no focus on pace whatsoever. On 9/8/25 (1 year of running), I'll start exploring pace, distance and race goals. Any flawed logic with the above if overall goal is injury free general fitness? |

Build the aerobic base first, then start to layer speed on after. |

If you decide you want to 'train' for a race, you can always adjust your workouts accordingly. But there's absolutely nothing wrong with easy running to get your base established, get consistent at running, and just enjoy yourself. |

From those ranges I'd take a guess that you're much younger than I am (I'm 40) or that you're using a default/standard calculation for those. If the former, carry on. If the latter, I'd HIGHLY recommend you do a max HR test and (ideally) figure out what your resting HR is (Garmin should roughly do this for you) and set your HR zones up by Heart Rate Reserve (this method of zones calculations takes into consideration not just your max HR, but your resting HR as well, which tends to be more accurate than just a straight percentage of HR). The commonly used "220-age" for determining max HR was (literally) only ever a general observation that was written on a napkin and tends to be very far off for most people. As a bit of contrast as to the bpm ranges for my zones, here's the chart from my intervals workout this morning: https://i.postimg.cc/mDJy6WCL/image.png 11.3 / 375 (placed my long winded nerd out post in a spoiler in order to keep this thread streamlined) Click To View Spoiler 3.65/99 |

Ran a shitty 13.16 today. It was hot, my legs hurt, probably dehydrated, just a not great run. Probably gonna pay for it on tomorrow’s run. 13.16/100.44 for Feb/375 for the year. |

@Advance TL;DR - Your zones are likely set correctly, or very close to it. For a longer read: Click To View Spoiler |

For a longer read: If you haven't seen that LTHR detected message yet, I highly encourage setting your zones by heart rate reserve (HRR). In essence, it uses your max HR and your resting HR to calculate your zones within the range that your HR will actually operate in, which is better than just a straight percentage of max HR. And this will also update automatically if your max HR changes and as you get more fit and your resting HR lowers. I have my zones set this way and honestly it lines up with 1bpm of what it would be by LTHR and also a V02Max lab test I did last year. The zones lining up like that is somewhat unique to me, YMMV. I am very interested in this. I have been using a Max HR for myself. I am 63, and pretty fit. Resting HR is 45, and I run a lot in addition to other cardio- cycling, rowing, Skierg, etc. My Garmin estimates my Vo2 max at 40, but it was up to 43 until I injured my heel and had to reduce the distance of my runs. I was an Orange Theory Fitness member, and they create a Max HR using your age and some algorithm. Based on their HR zones, I felt like it was accurate based on my perceived efforts. They are Zone 1- 50-60% Zone 2- 61-70% Zone 3- 71-83% Zone 4- 84-91% Zone 5- 92-100% Do those align with standard zones? |

14.25 / 402 Asked my coach for some longer intervals today as they're "easy" to execute on the treadmill since the forecast indicated icy roads this morning (and they are a solid sheet of ice right now). 3 sets of 2 miles at marathon effort (2.5 minute recovery) into 2 sets of 1 mile at half marathon effort (2 minute recovery). |

10/366 @commander_keen I have been toying around with starting to try and work on speed. For intervals I have always just used my marathon pace from 5/11/24 of 7:51. I’ve been on the treadmill quite a bit lately and have been toying around with the speeds. I understand the treadmill is hands down way easier than an outside run. But, I have been able to keep my heart rate at a manageable rate while speeding up. You have it down to a science I have noticed for you intervals. 5k pace/1/2 pace/10k pace/marathon pace. Is it as simple as just doing an all out effort at each individual race and use that time for interval training? Tia |

And it's not because I've gone all-out in a time trial for those various distances, but rather because there's a "performance curve" that's pretty accurate for most everyone. If a person can run 20 minutes for a 5k then there are pretty known equivalent times for a 10k, half marathon, marathon, etc. Much more here: Click To View Spoiler |

This weekend Im doing the 4x4x48. Working around a birthday party and wife is having a party so I gotta put the baby to bed, but with minor altering I can get it done. Going to tweak it a little to get to 50 miles instead of the 48. I will try and toy with the solo time trial more seriously after my 100 in April. Don’t want to tweak nothing while in training for said race. |
