The reason 300 in the 1/8th became a thing is because someone put a 30g bounty out for the first person to do it. There are issues limiting these cars as you mention. It’s also typical to see cars not pick up as much in the second 1/8th. For example my street car runs 119 mph in the 1/8th and 150 ish in the 1/4. |

Seeing top fuel cars in person is an unreal experience. You really cant grasp the power these cars have watching on TV/video. I highly recommend it even if you aren't into drag racing. Just remember ear pro and don't stand right behind one when they fire them up in the pits to seat the clutch. It's like a light version of getting pepper sprayed. I learned the hard way why the crew puts on gas masks.

If I recall correctly, 345 is the fastest I've seen. For what it's worth, Kitty O'Neil went 3.22 at 412 mph in the quarter in an H2O2 powered dragster back in 1977 - 45 years ago! |

Also the force of drag is related to the square of the velocity. So that last 40 mph the velocity is only increasing by about 10%, but the increase in power required is 100%. Even though those things make crazy power they are already near max power 100' off the line once the tires hook up so it is just a race against time at that point. If you made the track 1/2 mile long they probably wouldn't go a whole bunch faster with the set up they have right now. |
