I think I'm driving my wife crazy keep telling her how I change my mind between turbo d16 and k swap lol.  She's like STFU and just buy something.

I'm thinking I might pick up a z6 head Sunday and just stick with the turbo plan.  That'll be an easy reliable 250hp.  I also got some hx wheels for driving around town I'll paint to match the car .  Too skinny for track wheels but I'm not rich enough to be burning up expensive soft tires driving back and forth to work for a year to work on it. Wanted to run my BMW bottle caps for regular driving but they had bends in them.

Changed my mind again doing a b swap.  Type r b18 build.  Don't want the weight of the k and don't want the limits of the d.  So b it is.

Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the hell out of the b series back in my Honda owning days, but the weight of the K can be helpful for traction. Just saying...

B series over d series is the right choice though.

A lot of people in the k swap groups saying it causes quite a bit of understeer in the crx with track driving. It's nearly 100 lbs heavier and since my power goal is only around 200-225  and I don't plan on doing any drag racing the weight isn't a big benefit.

Another deciding factor is I want to do a hood exit duct from my radiator which will be a scirocco mounted further forward at a 45 angle.   Having the intake manifold on the front of the k makes that impossible.

You may have already thought of this - but what's the absolute end goal? One lap wonder at a track or continuous laps for one session, endurance racing, etc? All things to consider with what power plant you put in there. I don't have any input other than HAVE FUN and ENJOY!! Best of luck!! Get it!!

I really don't plan to do organized competitive racing.  Just go on open track days and drive as fast as I can for an hour or two.  The time attack stuff seems interesting but we'll see.    For now it's just build something cool and fast .   I tend to do a lot of while I'm in there stuff. I'm going to make a carbon fiber roof and hood and plexiglass windows  may end up doing fenders door skins as well. May end up tube framing the front end instead of just doing a tube reinforcement bar.  I really don't know.   Only thing I am certain on now is a b18 type r build for the motor.

I mean my crv started out as maybe I'll buff this thing. Didn't look good enough so I painted it then fuck it full mechanical restoration might as well get better wheels expensive suspension and motor upgrades.  Might as well get a JDM motor and rebuild it and paint it. Might as well spend dozens of hours molding BMW m3 bumper and sideskirts onto it. Might as well make a spoiler.    Lol.  I'm not good at keeping things simple.  I almost decided to j swap the crv and turbo it and make it fast but decided a new project would be better than destroying the reliability of my daily driver so I bought a crx

Waiting on a guy who's supposed to by my d16 then I'll go pick up a b18 to start building around.

Meanwhile I built a lightweight reinforcement bar today on the donor that will allow me to mount a scirocco radiator at a forward angle and I put another bar on it to mount an AC condenser in front because fuck having no AC.  Probably going to do an electric compressor system.  With an integrated tucked AC kit.

Was a huge pain to make that had to spot weld the brackets to the frame rail mount plates with the bumper on and lined up to everything  so it bolts up right.  Thankfully there's no engine in the car or radiator/ condenser so I was able to get to the upper bar.  This thing is quite a bit lighter than the original bar.

After I build the BMW/crx mashup bumper I'll probably make a lower bar I can mount a sturdy splitter to that connects to this and the lower traction bar.

Made some fender cutout aero yesterday from some ef hatch fenders from the first donor car.  Will fiberglass them up and make a mold then make some carbon fiber versions most likely.  Also got all my materials for making molds and carbon fiber parts so roof and other things will be coming fairly soon.     Still saving up to fund my b18 build or waiting for this other guy who might trade me my a6 and some cash for a type r built block.

Nice a relatively wide tire for a CRX will fit nicely on an 8" wheel.

Yeah they may poke a bit.  Might have cut and flare the fenders and quarters a bit since I plan to track this someday.  Don't want it to rub in turns.

Picked up another d16a6.  80 bucks.  Has a spun bearing but Im just taking the head alternator tps and iacv from it since mine is missing those and currently has a d15 head.

All I need is a starter and some axles to get this running now.

Still doing b18 swap but if I can get this running I can take it to work and get a lot of stuff done faster while building a swap for it.

Plus if I get this running it will be worth double when I sell it.  A good running OEM a6 is worth about 1100 since few exist anymore and the guys restoring si crxs want them.

ADHD alert. I changed my mind again.  I looked up the cost of building a d16 block and it's not that bad.  The sleeves in this donor a6 I got are very clean.  Cost of some forged rods and pistons are pretty reasonable   .  Some good valve springs and I can boost the a6 to 200-250 HP reliably. No VTEC needed. Small turbo with fast spool will get it done.

Also this lets me do some really cool shit. Going to mount the turbo in the back.  Leaves me a lot of room for the hood duct through the radiator.   I'm going to build a tub where the spare tire well is that ducts  behind the rear suspension subframe.   Connected to the front edge of the rear diffuser where it inlets.    That will feed the turbo compartment with fresh cold air and vent out  between the tail lights.  Will also run exhaust pipe straight out of there from the turbo.

With the long intake pipe I can get away with no intercooler or a very small one positioned on the other end of the rear intake duct from the air intake.

A big benefit of this besides it looking cool as hell is the rear intake duct will also provide more rear downforce like a second diffuser and the airflow should smooth out any rear end drag combined with the wing and large rear diffuser.   Turbo lag according to the race guys I have talked to that run rear turbo is not noticable as long as you wrap the exhaust pipe well to maintain exhaust velocity.   Might see at most a 5 percent loss due to slightly cooler exhaust temp.at the turbo.

This also eliminates heat soak problems from running a turbo in the engine compartment.
Moves a bit of weight to the back compared to front weight of motor swap. Another bonus.

The downside.  I'm going to have to buy an expensive oilless turbo because running oil to the back has some reliability issues.   Also a lot of work to build all this but I enjoy fab work so I'm looking forward to that part.

The weak point of this is going to be the transmission. I have a 95 ex trans with the short gearing.  Should handle 200 HP pretty well but may have to get something expensive if I decide to tune up to 300 someday.

This is more in line with what I wanted to do from the start but I was convincing myself to do the simple thing and just motor swap it.  Fuck that.  Gonna do some cool shit.

How well can a turbo work with that much pipe going to and from it? Turbos work because of the hot exhaust which is why they are normally on or near the engine.  Running way back there lets the gasses cool down a ton unless you use some SpaceX levels of insulation.  The temperature differential between the hot and cold side is why they work.  To add, that much pipe and joints will have lots of opportunities for leaks.
ARFCOM GD hates everything so don't freak out if you catch grief for what you like. Unless you like AKs, then GFY.

works great still
only losses about 1# of boost on an F-body & thats a lot more pipe than a CRX

plenty of setups like this done & tested , on many diff car forums

The pipes are always under pressure. It's not like there's a void until you mash the pedal.  Not uncommon in racecars

I'm locked into the d16 now.  Built the hood exit and the duct just clears the headers. Need to get a scirocco radiator next and chop off the lower support.  Replace with tube so I can mount it the way I want and run the duct up to this exit. Still gotta weld and grind more then fiberglass it up to make it pretty

I don't understand why there aren't more rear or low mount turbos. It seems like it's well proven that they still work great. The oiling seems to be the main difficulty. I was looking at my Bronco and thinking how you could just replace the muffler with a turbo and keep you engine bay pretty tidy. Way above my level but it seems like it makes a lot of sense especially for street cars.

Cost mostly.  You have to buy an expensive oilless turbo or run a standalone oil system or run pumps and lines to the engine oil.  Then you have to run a custom intake tube to the manifold, you have to probably have some custom exhaust work done as well.

Ends up being way more expensive than an eBay turbo kit unless you can do all the work yourself.

You also have the myth that it will create  noticeable turbo lag so most people don't conssider it.

I think people also want to open the hood and see the turbo stuff because cool factor.

To me it makes a lot more sense if you can do it without heavy modifications.  I'm doing heavy modifications because it will be cool as fuck but that's just me .

Does Rocket Bunny make a wide body kit for those? Their kits are excellent.

EDIT

I see you can actually do your own body stuff quite well - No need for an aftermarket kit!

Yep.  Not a fan of most of the body kits.  I will probably build off of some.budget wings west knock off rocker and door panel kits though since it will be less time consuming than welding up and shaving all the holes from the OEM trim. Those also look good.    But the front bumper will be custom and the rear bumper will probably be mostly cutout for a big diffuser

Decided to mock up the front end.  Discovered the apron was still bent from previous accident and they welded on core support about 5/8 off center to the right.     Chopped it all off.    Got the apron squared up.  Need to bring my vented hood home because I know it's square to my bumper reinforcement I built.  Once I have that lined up I'll built a steel bar light and hood pin support to replace OEM upper support.   Then chop that lower core support off after I make a bolt in support bar at work .

Lots to do but moving along.  Everything measures square now at least.  Thankfully I have the unwreckwd donor car  to build off of.  Makes all this easy.  Unfortunately that red one at work has tons of rust pr.id just build that one.

Got my hood home and mounted and lined everything up.  My fender flares are here so more chopping and welding and bodywork to do as well.  Gotta put those on and make an upper radiator and headlight tubular support.  Got all the supplies at the metal store today.

I build custom cars for a living.  Work at a custom shop.  I work on my stuff Saturdays or stay late sometimes.  The owners let me use the shop fory personal stuff.

I take every other Monday off . Work 4/10 5/10 so got some more work done today.   I'm just fast with bodywork stuff been doing it for about 30 years now.

I wish I was retired I'd have this thing done in 2-3 weeks lol
