Well.. it sat in a Michigan motorpool lot for 30 years.... There is a 57' Chevy sitting in a gas station in Minneapolis with 6 miles on it and it has surface rust too.. Just the moisture in the air is enough to cause this. |

I had a 1996 Caprice for my issued car. Hated to see it go down the road. I'd take it any day over a Crown Vic. It was a nice ride, quick response, and great traction. Good 'ole Goodyear F32 snow tires and it was a very capable rwd unit. I had a friend who had a built up Impala SS that was pretty quick. The dash was huge. Too rich for my wallet though. Mike |

| Best police cars ever! My 1st issued, in '01, was a '95 Caprice & it was awesome. Fast, handled great, tons of room & a tank of gas lasted 3 shifts. The ony good thing about the Crown Vic was that they were roomy inside & in the trunk, other than that they sucked. The only thing worse was the Taurus/Interceptor. |

Bought a 96 new, specced an engine block heater in it so dealer had to factory order it, got a tour of the factory the week my car was being built. Very comfortable car. Miss it sometimes, don't miss the gas milage. |

In 1999 I was new in the feds, and had one of these assigned to me and my partner... it was dark red/maroon with a dark maroon interior. It was the only caprice in our office that had the bucket seats. All the rest had the standard bench seat. It was useless for surveillance since a red car sticks out worse than a marked patrol car, but man that thing was fast... In city driving, it was heavy and didnt like making hard tight turns. But, when you got on an open road, at triple digit speeds, it would settle down and hug the highway like it was on rails At the time, you were responsible for setting up maintenance and repairs on your gov car. The garage we used to take our cars to was run by a couple of knowledgeable motor heads... well, one day I have the car in their shop for some routine service and while talking with one of the guys, he tells me he can work a little magic with his computer, change some timing, remap the fuel injection, put in a test pipe and get rid of the cat, and add some significant HP... All for the cost of a $35 test pipe... He said he could get the motor up over 450 HP and still run on normal fuel. I said "cool, make it so!!!" And paid for the test pipe out of my own pocket... An hour or two later I had a unmarked police car that would pull 0-60 in a hair over 4 seconds, which at the time was keeping up with a new corvette, and would pull hard to well over 130mph. I would back off before the engine stopped pulling... It was by far the fastest car in our fleet by a wide margin for the next couple years... I loved that car... a couple years later they found a large crack in the frame by one of the motor mounts and it was junked... I may or may not have cried a little when they made me give it up... |

Very true. In 1995, NYC Transit police merged with regular NYPD. Just before the merger, Transit PD bought a bunch of marked and unmarked 9C1 caprices with the 5.7 LT-1 engine. NYPD fielded caprices too but they bought them with a smaller 4.3L V8 (L99), No, not the Chevy blazer V6. Anyways, as I rookie I got to drive an 5.7 LT-1 caprice on the way downtown to the tombs on the FDR drive. It was around 2 AM in the winter, so traffic was light, I got that sum bitch up to 120 mph. I had to slow down when I hit some boiler plates over some potholes because I almost launched it off road.  Great cop cars, cheap interior though. Some booger-eating cops would get bored though and would stab the foam dash with pens and peel the foam off the steering wheel down to the steel inner ring. |

The bolt-in "test" pipe, catalytic converter delete was a thing back then. The Saudis were buying GM products and didn't have emission standards. A buddy's brother got a factory test pipe for his '86 Chevy Monte Carlo SS. You were driving a red Caprice? Hahaha, I would have busted your balls and called you a fire marshal. |

It wasn't even fire engine red, it was a dark maroon red... not sure what was worse. At least if it was a bright fire engine red, the mutts would have thought we were part of the FDNY or something... But the maroon red just looked out of place no matter where you were parked. The only thing that was worse was a honda accord we had for an undercover that was metallic emerald green. You could spot that car a mile away in manhattan traffic. |

But they were a brute of a car. Hell I still remember the sound of a Caprice in the distance, coming to help when things were going sideways, it was a great sound to hear. I went from using the Caprices to one of the first Crown Vics. Smaller than the ones that followed, had a damned speed limiter that cut in at 115… it was nimble on city streets, but gutless on the freeway. |

Do you go far enough back, or know any old timers who have ever driven a police package Nova? I have talked to a couple of guys who said they were the best urban environment cars around. They wouldn't run more than 115 on the highway with a light bar, but they handled like a gocart around town. |

Bought a '96 Caprice new, w/ the tow package, so engine was derated to 250 hp, tuned for more torque IIRC. Spec'd an engine block heater in Texas so dealership had to order it from the factory in Arlington, got a tour, my car might have been on the line that day. Was a very smooth car on the highway, but Chevy could never make the cruise control work consistently, had an intermittent fault they could never fix. |
