I have everything ready for my 300blk build but one piece. The barrel. This is going to be a suppressed bump in the night gun. I finally decided to go with KAK's 6.25" barrel. So I click categories>ar15>upper parts>barrels>300blk.....wait...what's 9x39? Little bit of Google'ing to check out the round and now I'm right back at square one. Thanks a lot KAK...

So anyone have personal experience with this round? Bigger badder 300blk is what it seems to be. Shortest barrel I can find is KAK's 8.5" which is longer than I'd want, but since it's running a pistol gas system theres room to chop 3-3.5" off the end.  Running a suppressor should more than compensate for the loss of pressure, right?

Damn it.

As a designated gunsmith I make $$ off of people changing their minds..

And as a guy that did a LOT of work with the 300 BLK. I would go the 9mm route in a heartbeat.

9x39 seems like more of a 458 socom or 50 beowulf competitor to me. It's a dedicated sub cartridge, that really doesn't offer anything over a 45acp except a few more grains and a much better BC.

300blk gets you lots of proven offerings with little to no tinkering, and you can shoot ~85 grain supers to ~250 grain subs with all sorts of different cool bullets, 9x39 gets you a 278 fmj, and not a whole lot else

You can easily reload 300BLK.

9x39 - not so much.  Seems as easy as 5.45x39mm to reload at this point.

It’s an awesome round. Significantly heavier than 300 blk, higher sectional density than sub sonic 44 mag, double stacks in rifle mags

It works in 7.62x39 mags, but a mag body with less curve would be ideal. I am playing with it in Six8 pattern pmags, the mag bodies are perfect, but the followers need tweaking.

You only have one 9x39 ammo option at the moment.  Lots of sub and super blackout options available now.  I went blackout and I'm happy with that decision, but would like to give the 9x39 a try as well.

So, do you have a .30 cal suppressor? The 300blk is what you seek. If you have a reloading press then it's not even a question.

Here's an older thread that had potential but fizzled out. When/if the Wolf 9x39 uppers hit the market, this round should take off in the US. I'm still wanting a US made VSS, at a decent price.

I think it's a larger diameter case isn't it?   Is bulk there a concern?   I'd rather go with 300 BO

The round is a necked up 7.62x39, even uses a 7.62x39 bolt in ARs, so it's huuuuge.

My draw to 9x39 is mostly on the combloc / AK side, specifically the AS-VAL, but since those aren't available yet I dabbled in the AR world in the meantime

From my research it seems like that while 300BO supers may get the job done, the subs don't reliably work for hunting. The 9x39 was designed to be effective subsonic all the time and I as I understand it it might be a better round than 300BO subs. The Russians encountered the same kinds of problems with 7.62x39 subsonic bullet weight as 300BO and seemed to feel that the bullet needed to be significantly heavier than 220gr to be reliably effective at subsonic velocites. They settled on 270gr + and have apparently been very happy with it

In my case I wanted specifically to shoot subs for hunting so I took the plunge on 9x39

My 10.5" barrel from Piedmont cartridge has been holding about 1.5" at 50 yards with a 4 MOA red dot and I'm happy with that so far. I'm hoping that the cartridge takes off and we get some better bullet types, but at least Tula FMJ is about 60 cents a round now which isn't terrible

9x39 with Ghost M on the bottom

I have a Form 1 pending for sub 300blk, but there's no reason I couldn't drill that hole larger for both calibers.

I have a SLR 5" 300blk but it doesn't stabilize subs which is why I was going for the KAK. I absolutely want to stick with a short barrel. After seeing this chart with 9x39 tested out of a 6.1" barrel against 300blk sub in a 9" barrel, it really made me think 9x39may be the better option in a gun that short...especially when/if better bullets are developed. Only thing is I don't know what can of worms I'd be opening up as far as cycling issues after cutting the barrel down. 6" would basically put it at the gas block (KAK) so any chance of cycling would require full time supression. I don't know if I want to be the first test dummy.

If PSA lauches a 9x39 AK I'm gonna be in like flynn.

Still toying with the idea of building an AR pistol in one but I really want a sidefolding trashcan gun in 9x39.

I'd be down like a clown for this as well. In another post on 9x39 someone mentioned Slagga Manufacturing who was working on the VSS

eta: Double checked and it's not 9x39, it's 7.62x39, 300blk or 223
