I’ve already seen the effects of this with several restaurant closings in my area.  Some, I couldn’t care less but others will be missed if they close for good.  Many of these, I’ve never heard of, either.  In big cities, the impact may not be that much but I think the closing of these fast food restaurants in smaller towns is a big deal.

Many are flying directly into South American countries, i.e. Columbia, Venezuela, & even Panama.

In listening to the video, it sounds more like closing in some areas rather than shutting down the franchise entirely.  While that is surprising for some of these, it is not all that unusual either. All retail stores go through cycles.

Now if these shut down entirely, that would be a pretty big deal. I suspect that small towns that rely heavily on such chains would be the last places to close.

This is the simple reality that our society hasn’t dealt with for at least 50+ years: that there is an inevitability beyond our control.

Back then, if you were unhealthy you simply died. I don’t say this lightly because medical science has kept me alive in the past but this is reality once the veneer is removed.

Imagine the masses begging for socialism or worse under the idea that “they” may live an extra day.

I know an autistic adult, that if cut off from his psych meds for longer than 30 days, will become very violent. How many people are in that same boat - a whole country going cold turkey from mood stabilizers/anti psychotics/ etc.? That would be...bad.

Yes. Yes, it would.

I think I'll request a 6 mo supply of my BP meds, come to think on it... I have about a year's worth of Amlodipine (the most important, I believe), but not the others.

Join the military, become a US citizen: Uncle Sam wants you and vous and tu

When Esmita Spudes Bidari was a young girl in Nepal, she dreamed of being in the military, but that wasn't a real option in her country.

Last week, she raised her right hand and took the oath to join the U.S. Army Reserves, thanks in part to a recruiter in Dallas who also is Nepalese and reached out to her through an online group.

Bidari, who heads to basic training in August, is just the latest in a growing number of legal migrants enlisting in the U.S. military as it more aggressively seeks out immigrants, offering a fast track to citizenship to those who sign up.

Struggling to overcome recruiting shortfalls, the Army and the Air Force have bolstered their marketing to entice legal residents to enlist, putting out pamphlets, working social media and broadening their outreach, particularly in inner cities. One key element is the use of recruiters with similar backgrounds to these potential recruits.

“It is one thing to hear about the military from locals here, but it is something else when it's from your fellow brother, from the country you’re from,” said Bidari, who was contacted by Army Staff Sgt. Kalden Lama, the Dallas recruiter, on a Facebook group that helps Nepalese people in America connect with one another. “That brother was in the group and he was recruiting and he told me about the military.”

The military has had success in recruiting legal immigrants, particularly among those seeking a job, education benefits and training as well as a quick route to becoming an American citizen. But they also require additional security screening and more help filling out forms, particularly those who are less proficient in English.

Both the Army and the Air Force say they will not meet their recruiting goals this year, and the Navy also expects to fall short. Pulling more from the legal immigrant population may not provide large numbers, but any small boosts will help. The Marine Corps is the only service on pace to meet its goal.

The shortfalls have led to a wide range of new recruiting programs, ad campaigns and other incentives to help the services compete with often higher-paying, less risky jobs in the private sector. Defense leaders say young people are less familiar with the military, are drawn more to corporate jobs that provide similar education and other benefits, and want to avoid the risk of injury and death that service in defense of the United States could bring. In addition, they say that little more than 20% meet the physical, mental and character requirements to join.

“We have large populations of legal U.S. residents who are exceptionally patriotic, they’re exceptionally grateful for the opportunities that this country has provided,” said Air Force Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas, head of the service’s recruiting command.

The biggest challenges have been identifying geographic pockets of immigrant populations, finding ways to reach them and helping any of those interested navigate the complex military recruiting applications and procedures.

Last October, the Army reestablished a program for legal permanent residents to apply for accelerated naturalization once they get to basic training. Recruiters began to reach out on social media, using short videos in various languages to target the top 10 countries that recruits had come from during the previous year.

The Air Force effort began this year, and the first group of 14 graduated from basic training and were sworn in as new citizens in April. They included recruits from Cameroon, Jamaica, Kenya, the Philippines, Russia and South Africa. As of mid-May there were about 100 in basic training who had begun the citizenship process and about 40 who had completed it.

Poll: Americans Don’t Want a Central Bank Digital Currency

A poll from the Cato Institute indicates that, while about half of Americans do not have an opinion regarding whether the Federal Reserve should “begin offering a government-issued digital currency, called a ‘central bank digital currency’ (CBDC),” among those with an opinion on the matter over twice as many — 34 percent of poll participants — oppose the prospect as support it — 16 percent.

This result of the poll conducted from February 27 through March 8 in collaboration with YouGov is promising for Americans concerned about the threat a CBDC, which the Federal Reserve and big financial companies have been testing in preparation for its potential introduction, poses to freedom and privacy in America.

The poll results further indicate that, if Americans can be educated about the abusive government powers a CBDC can advance, many Americans currently undecided regarding the introduction of a CBDC will see good reason to oppose it. Emily Ekins and Jordan Gygi wrote in their May 31 in-depth Cato Institute article concerning the poll results:

Overwhelming majorities would oppose the adoption of a CBDC if it meant that the government could control what people spend their money on (74%), that the government could monitor their spending (68%), that a CBDC would abolish all U.S. cash (68%), that a CBDC would attract cyberattacks (65%), that the government could charge a tax on those who don’t spend money during recessions (64%), or that the government could freeze the digital bank accounts of political protesters (59%). Americans were marginally opposed (52%) if a CBDC could cause some people to stop using private banks, resulting in some banks going out of business.

The candidates now in second place in the Republican and Democratic presidential primaries — Ron DeSantis and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. — appear to be in the anti-CBDC camp. Hopefully, we will see more and more politicians joining them over the coming months in standing up against this threat posed by the Federal Reserve and US government.

Meanwhile, it is also important that Americans across the country educate the people they come into contact with about why a CBDC in America is unacceptable. The new poll from the Cato Institute suggests that many people will be receptive to this message.

The whole West Coast is shut down.

Port of Seattle remains shut down; Consumers could feel impact

If this work stoppage continues, everyday shoppers could feel the effects, just like they did during the pandemic. Most people remember the supply chain issues then.

There are plenty of containers at the Port of Seattle, but no one is working to move them.

Edie Rouleau has worked for 15 years at Fini, an accessories store in the Pike Place Market. She remembers the supply chain issues a couple of years ago that forced them to buy goods that didn’t need to come through the Port of Seattle.

Yep, it’s corporations scaling back on their locations that aren’t turning a profit.  Regular restaurants such as Red Lobster, TGIFriday’s, Applebee’s, Denny’s, IHOP, and Hard Rock Cafe are also doing this.  It’s been a trend across several business sectors since 2020 COVID and shows how much the economy has taken a hit since then, and more than likely, will continue with even more closings to come.

San Fran's dying downtown is dealt another huge blow as Westfield stops making mortgage payments on $550M loan for massive mall - blaming crime for falling sales and Nordstrom closure

- Westfield has stopped making payments on a $558 million loan for its San Francisco mall, and is handing it back to their lender, who will appoint a receiver
- The decision is sparked in large part by the decision from Nordstrom, the anchor tenant, to close in August amid 'rampant crime'
- Westfield generated $455 million in sales in 2019: Last year, sales were down about a third to $298 million

Great Reset: Dutch Govt Launches Farmer Buyout Scheme as Thousands Face Shut Down

The Dutch government launched its long-anticipated Great Reset-style farmer buyout scheme on Monday, which could potentially see upwards of ten thousand farms shut down forever to fall in line with the green agenda of the European Union.

Following years of political wrangling, the government of The Netherlands has launched its programme for buying out farms that do not comply with the EU’s Natura 2000 scheme supposedly meant to protect environmentally sensitive areas. The buyout programme will initially impact approximately 3,000 privately-owned farms which are deemed to emit too much nitrogen.

Starting next month, farmers will be able to apply for a buyout, which will be set at 120 per cent of the farm’s value. In addition to the top nitrogen emitters, the government will also offer buyouts for dairy, pig and poultry farmers to shut down in exchange for a payout of 100 per cent of their farm’s value. It is expected that some 8,000 farmers will be eligible for the second scheme, Dutch public broadcaster NOS reports.

In total, the government has allocated 1.4 billion euros to cover the two programmes. The buyout scheme, which will last until next April, will remain voluntary for now, however, the Dutch government has previously suggested that if uptake is not high enough it may be forced to impose mandatory buyouts.

The farmers’ group Agractie expressed concern over the launch, saying that while a website has been opened to allow farmers to see if they are eligible for a buyout, the other options, such as reducing emissions, are not currently explained, meaning that farmers cannot accurately judge which direction to take.

The move to shut down potentially thousands of farms in The Netherlands, despite the ongoing food crisis, could have a significant impact further afield given the country’s status as Europe’s largest exporter of meat and one of the largest dairy exporters in the world.

The scarcity of water is emerging as a global economic threat. With China and India looking the most at risk

- Researchers say that large Asian economies like India and China will be the most affected from water shortages.

- Agriculture, manufacturing, and the transition toward renewable energy will likely be the sectors most affected by water shortages.

- Water scarcity must not be viewed as a sectoral issue, but one that “transcends the entire economy,” Arunabha Ghosh, the CEO of the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, said.

So he wants to play monetary games?
The US gave Kenya 966 million last year in aid. Take that to zero. Anyone attempting to hurt you financially and encouraging others to do the same deserves no financial aid.
