Matt Bracken is one of the best wargaming orators out there that speak with our interest in mind and he definitely touches on my topics on this one.  He brings up things that I had never thought of before.  

Kind of sad that anything less than a hour is considered to be a short podcast these days.

Digital ID's in the US? Absolutely. Some states have already implemented digital driver's licenses, so they already have the digital data, and it will not be hard to accomplish. It doesn't matter what they call it: Digital DL, Digital Passport, Digital Vaccine ID, Digital Voter ID, etc, it will all be in the same master database.

My dad was a China Sailor in the 1930s, the Yangtze Patrol? He was 17 and said it looked more like a war to him. Gen Smedley Butler was in Command of the entire show, dad even was allowed to take his picture which I have. I developed a keen interest in China from my dad's stories of being there. One thing that’s been on my mind lately is Digital ID would be a great way to monitor rationing during wartime.  This could be the way they bring it to the American public?  Now, with Kamala mentioning price controls, rationing is definitely a given to follow.

One thing that sticks out is after Tiananmen Square, China could have been financially isolated from the rest of the world, sort of like what we did to Cuba but with much more teeth.  Instead, the US relocates much of their factories to China and now, we find ourselves dependent on them for pretty much most of our goods.

After WWII, American self sufficiency was considered to be a matter of national security.  We sure forgot about that and threw it all away in less than 50 years.

Since getting our freeze dryer about 2 weeks ago, I've filled two big bins with high-quality "survival food" in mylar.

It'd be almost twice that had we not needed to freeze a few frame-filled "supers" from our bee colonies (kills the eggs of small hive beetles). Thankfully, they come out of the freezer today, so I can get back on the task of putting up stuff to help us get through what's clearly visible on the horizon.

We brought in two baskets of beans yesterday, so I might blanche them and add some more we still have in another freezer from last year. Fast & easy.

Housing is moving in MI - slowly, but moving - and I am seeing a LOT of out of state plates here. More than I’ve seen in my life. Quick, only-this-anecdotal-evidence guess? MI is regaining a lot of new residents. Maybe we lost them in the two-plus decade diaspora outflow and are just regaining them, I don’t know.

Panic as Rite Aid abruptly shuts ALL stores in two states - with customers scrambling to find a new pharmacy

Rite Aid has now shut all the stores it once had in Michigan and Ohio - meaning tens of thousands of customers need to find new pharmacies.

The drugstore's latest filings at bankruptcy court show it has now completely cut all ties with the two Midwestern states.

Rite Aid had more than 2,000 stores before it filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in October 2023 as it battled mounting debts.

The number of CBP worker suicides in 2024 has almost eclipsed 2023 total — with months to go

The number of US Customs and Border Protection workers who have committed suicide so far this year has almost eclipsed the total number who took their own life in 2023 — as exhausted agents say the crisis at the besieged southern border is taking its toll.

At least seven CBP employees have committed suicide this year, just one less than the eight who took their own life last year — with more than four months still remaining in 2024, CBP’s former “suicidologist,” Dr. Kent Corso, told The Post.

There were also eight suicides in 2020 and 11 in 2021, ABC News previously reported. CBP suffered its worst year in 2022, when 15 employees took their own life, Corso, who left the agency in May, said.

There are 60,000 CBP employees, including around 19,000 Border Patrol agents.

UK could have 'thousands' of mpox cases as Europe stockpiles vaccines over deadly virus

The deadly virus, which has a death rate of up to 10 percent of those it infects, could already be spreading undetected in the UK, according to health experts.

Europe is scrambling to deal with a potential surge in mpox cases over the coming weeks after the first diagnosed case was announced in Sweden this week.

Europe's top health agency has sparked concern after raising its risk alert level for mpox on Friday.

The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) now sees a “moderate” risk of mpox, compared to “low” earlier, for the general population in Europe. It said it was “highly likely” that more cases would emerge in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, health experts in the UK believe that the mutant strain of mpox, Clade 1b, may already be in the UK.

It is thought that there could be as many as "hundreds or even thousands of cases" in the country since the virus may be spreading asymptomatically, according to an expert. The deadly strain, which has a death rate of around five percent in adults and ten percent in children, can spread simply through close contact with infected individuals.

Paul Hunter, a professor of medicine at the University of East Anglia, told The Telegraph that it was “likely that we’ve got infections already in Britain”.

Health experts, who have seen the virus spread rapidly in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), have warned there is a significant lag between infection and visual symptoms.

Dr Leandre Murhula Masirkika, who researched the variant in the DRC, said lesions appear two weeks after infections and that before that "symptoms can be as subtle as a headache and fever, so they might be walking around with it and be infectious".

Professor Trudie Lang, a professor of global health research at the University of Oxford, echoed the fear of an undetected spread in the UK. She said: "People with a milder infection (such as small lesions on their genitalia) could be walking around with it because they don’t know they’re infected. They might get on a plane with it, without knowing and spread it further."

Cuba grapples with severe power, water, and food shortages

Cuban media reports that electricity, food, and even water shortages are becoming increasingly noticeable. Independent or pro-government journalists do not hide the country's realities, which is a dream destination for many tourists.

The portal Cuba Debate, citing the state-owned electricity company Union Electrica, noted that the island has an average daily power deficit of 550 megawatts (MW). Power outages in most of the country's territory have already lasted several hours.

The largest power outages on Friday occurred in Santa Cruz Del Norte, Camaguey, Nuevitas, Cienfuegos, and Matanzas.

Power shortages are leading to difficulties in water transmission. According to the independent Ciber Cuba, drinking water shortages are exacerbating difficulties in food production. According to Cuban media, the situation is particularly dramatic in the eastern town of Sagua de Tanamo, where water supply interruptions have been recorded in the water network for over two months.

Food production drastically down

Food shortages in stores throughout the country are becoming increasingly visible, whereas independent media reports that in mid-August, only rice and sugar were being supplied without problems.

As the media reports, the poor living conditions of the island's residents are worsened by Cubans' declining purchasing power and rising fuel prices. The decline in food production is intensifying, and even the Cuban government admits this.

According to data from the National Office of Statistics and Information (Onei) in Havana, food production in Cuba has dropped by almost 67 percent in the past five years. The government-affiliated Cuban institution noted a significant reduction in production, especially in the case of pork and bread.

Why it is so bad

A week ago, the portal 14ymedio reported that the island's stores lacked powdered milk, poultry, oil, sausage, and pasta.

The government-affiliated newspaper "5 de Septiembre" confirmed this, which stated that the increasing food shortages result from price caps and the vigorous black market activity in Cuba. According to the newspaper, food products are massively bought by people conducting street trade.

Human rights organisations point out that the increasing food shortages in Cuban stores are deepening the poverty of the Caribbean island's residents.

Other unfavourable phenomena for citizens have also been noticeable in Cuba in recent months. In addition to power and water outages, these include rising fuel prices and declining agro-industrial production.

Haitian priest says conditions in country are ‘unacceptable, intolerable, and inconceivable’

The ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Haiti that has seen gangs take over most of the country includes “an organized campaign against the Church,” with many Catholics suffering from kidnappings, theft, and aggression, according to a Haitian priest.

Father Baudelaire Martial, CSC, a priest from the Congregation of Holy Cross, spoke recently to the papal charity Aid to the Church in Need (ACN) on a visit to the group’s Königstein, Germany, headquarters. The Holy Cross fathers run eight parishes and several schools in Haiti, according to their website.

“The situation in Port-au-Prince [the capital city] is unacceptable, intolerable, and inconceivable. We live in very precarious conditions,” the priest told ACN.

“People are hungry, and there is a shortage of medication. Many doctors have been kidnapped. Some schools are still closed, teachers make very little money, there is no tourism, and the major tourist compound of Labadee, in the north, is closed.”

Martial said many parishes, including the city’s cathedral, have been forced to close due to the conflict.

“Other areas are more accessible, and so the faithful have taken to gathering in the parishes that are open. We also offer pastoral support online. The people’s faith remains alive. A large crowd attended Mass on Holy Thursday, for instance, despite the danger,” he said.

Ministering in the capital, Port-au-Prince, Martial said it is frightening to know that “when we leave the house, we never know if we’re coming back.” In the Foyer de l’Esperance, a social center that Martial runs for young people, a 12-year-old girl was murdered and another was violently attacked. Some schools have been forced to close and switch to online instruction, he said.

“I have sometimes had to throw myself to the ground to dodge bullets. We hear the sound of automatic weapons throughout the day. We are afraid, but we have to be present to support our people. We are suffering, but we are called to go beyond this suffering, towards hope,” he said.

“Some people are traumatized and have suffered serious injury or abuse, but as time goes by, the shock diminishes. Fear remains, but as a Church, we cannot surrender. We have to keep moving forward and bestow hope.”

Haiti’s agricultural sector also faces great difficulties, he said, with productive areas such as the rice paddies of the Artibonito region being taken by armed gangs. All of it is contributing to the people of Haiti — already the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere — getting “poorer by the day.”

The priority at the moment, Martial said, “for everyone, is security and putting food on the table.”

“I have the impression that there is an organized campaign against the Church, because we have seen so many priests and religious fall victim to these gangs,” Martial continued.

“In my community, a priest was kidnapped, and we had to pay a ransom for his release. Many dioceses and communities have suffered from theft and aggression. This is how they pressure the Church into silence, but our prophetic mission requires us to call out what is evil. We know that this is a risky position, but that is our cross, and we accept it. As a Church, we must have the faith and the strength to accompany our people and all those who suffer, and we will continue to do so, even at risk to our own lives.”

Ruled by oppressive regimes from the late 1950s until almost the 1990s, Haiti has long been plagued with serious natural disasters, including massive earthquakes in 2010 and 2021.

Many reports have emerged in recent years of priests and religious sisters being kidnapped by gangs and held for ransom. The country’s Catholic bishops have repeatedly appealed for an end to the violence.

The assassination of Haitian president Jovenel Moïse in July 2021 threw the country into further chaos, with Prime Minister Ariel Henry prevented from returning from an overseas trip due to the violence and eventually submitting his resignation. Haiti has had no sitting elected officials since January 2023.

In June, several hundred Kenyan police officers arrived in the country as part of a U.N.-mandated, multinational force seeking to restore peace to Haiti, the BBC reported, but so far the effort has not produced lasting change in the country’s security situation.

Manufacturers have told the Energy Secretary that introducing so-called zonal pricing – which would mean higher prices in the South relative to Scotland, for instance  – would have disastrous consequences for jobs and investment.

Make UK, the industry lobby group, warned in a consultation response: “Steel or other energy intensive industries would have no realistic option to relocate their very heavy assets to more favourable pricing zones and would instead be forced to shut down.

“Moreover, encouraging a factory to move makes it open to moving out of the UK entirely, as it will reconsider all its options for the best location.”

At the moment, electricity is traded across one wholesale market covering all of the UK.

The change, proposed under the previous Conservative administration, would mean areas close to wind and solar farms pay less for power. It has been suggested as a way of reforming the country’s electricity grid to ease the shift to net zero by reducing the need for new power lines.

What’s WRONG With FARMING!

Your food supply is at risk due to several changes that have taken place over the last 20 years.  These things have broken farming in America and beyond.

I talked to Kerry White, a Montana Farm and Ranch owner to define what those problems are and the dangers they present to our food supply.

Farmer suicides have skyrocketed. In the last two weeks 6 farmers in Minnesota have committed suicide. I know there were a few in North Dakota and Nebraska in the same time period.  Grain prices have crashed while input costs have not come down at all. Milk prices are shit. Interest rates have risen sharply the last two years. Only bright spot is cattle prices and that’s because the herd is so small now.  As a farmer I can tell everyone it’s bad and it’s going to be much worse next year.  We will see hundreds if not thousands of farmers going under next year unless things change.  I’m fortunate to have another company that can carry the farm, most farmers don’t have that luxury.

Classic example of how insurgencies kick off and kick up. In this instance, ball ammunition was not used. But in the future, be assured this will intensify. Inevitably there will be shootings caught on video causing violence to explode. Many people reading this spent time— even years in many cases — in places where violence sparked violence to explode and instead of abating it just grew and grew and grew. In fact, I am in Bangkok now (left Okinawa yesterday) in the immediate area where I witnessed much violence during Thai coups. There was serious fighting here and I was in it. Thai Army was much more disciplined than depicted here with some American police, yet the violence still exploded.

Listen to what I am saying. Listen closely. We will go into civil and other sorts of war. There will be checkpoints. One of the most dangerous things you ever will do is go through checkpoints. Avoid going through checkpoints at night. Avoid checkpoints where possible....
