I did two detents and only lost two ceramic balls and one steel, (this was before I decided to go get my tweezers) and only hit my finger with the mallet once lol. Oh, and I used calipers to measure the thickness of the lockbar plus detent to try to get close with the new one. I got within 0.02 mm on the first one, then on the REO I left it a bit prouder both because it was in a lot tighter and I wanted it a little stronger anyway. As hard as I was smacking it I'm not too worried about it falling out but if it does I'll just put another one in a bit deeper. |

I do like the needle applicators though. I doubt that a knife is putting enough stress on any oil for it to really matter what you use as long as it's a reasonable weight. I believe Daiwa reel oil was very popular before lubes started being marketed specifically for knives. |

I doubt much makes them different in the grand scheme of things, which is why I'll use what I have but doubt that I'll buy more. I bought a bunch of 3 oz (or so, going from memory) bottles of the Hoppe's on an end of season clearance at Wally world super cheap a couple years ago, so that's good enough for me. I will be either refilling the KPL bottle if I can get it open or buying a bottle with the needle tip when it runs out, though. It makes getting a drop or two right on the pivot/bearings much easier than the plastic spout on the Hoppe's bottles. |

Initially not a ton but what I'm hoping, based on past experience with an acid washed Burger that came with a ceramic detent, is that after a good amount of opening and closing to break it in the harder ceramic will smooth out the detent track. |

I was basically smacking it a couple of times, measuring, smacking some more, etc., and hoping I didn't go too far. |

It'll lightly install the ball, then probe it to figure how deep it is then press it in the desired amount. |

View Quote So kind of the same idea, I figured that with modern computer controlled equipment it would be automatic, at least the seating part. Haha now I'm imagining a worker sitting at a station with a press of some kind, manually placing the ball into the lockbar before the press seats it. Next to them is a stack of lockbars, and on the other side a bin full of detent balls. And then the bin gets knocked over, ten thousand detent balls go flying all over the place, and everyone is stepping on them and doing the cartoon running in place thing before falling down. |
