They did offer to send me one, but they’ll also sharpen and cleanup the knife. I figure for $25 round trip, that’s worth it.

Speaking of bearings, I took the F3 apart this morning and while it was not as bad as I was expecting, it is a bit of a pain in the ass.

I've got one, it's the first Spyderco I bought. I was kinda disappointed in it, doesn't feel great in my hand.

It's not bad if you're careful.

This, though, this was kind of finicky.

But actually not terrible once I figured out my method.

I'm using KPL that someone sent as a freebie in a trade some time ago. It seems to work great IMO. I used nano oil on a few knives when I had a Grimsmo, since it came with a couple ounces or so, and it works well also.

I've been using KLP and like it well enough. So does that detent ball just pop in and out then?

I set the lock over a nut and punched it out with a T5 bit and my gunsmith mallet, then set the new ball in using tweezers and seated it by holding that same T5 on it's side on top of the ball and smacking it with the mallet. I did two detents and only lost two ceramic balls and one steel, (this was before I decided to go get my tweezers) and only hit my finger with the mallet once lol.

Oh, and I used calipers to measure the thickness of the lockbar plus detent to try to get close with the new one. I got within 0.02 mm on the first one, then on the REO I left it a bit prouder both because it was in a lot tighter and I wanted it a little stronger anyway. As hard as I was smacking it I'm not too worried about it falling out but if it does I'll just put another one in a bit deeper.

Let's talk oils.
Why Nano oil?
Why not, Gun oil, 3in1, Turbine oil, Marvel mystery oil, 0-20w Mobil 1, Olive oil etc.

As I mentioned, I've used nano oil when it came with a knife, KPL since it was free, otherwise I always just used Hoppe's premium gun oil. I do like the needle applicators though. I doubt that a knife is putting enough stress on any oil for it to really matter what you use as long as it's a reasonable weight. I believe Daiwa reel oil was very popular before lubes started being marketed specifically for knives.

I was being a wise ass,
I don't have any Nano or KPL, just wanted to know what makes the oil different for a knife.

I know you were.

I doubt much makes them different in the grand scheme of things, which is why I'll use what I have but doubt that I'll buy more. I bought a bunch of 3 oz (or so, going from memory) bottles of the Hoppe's on an end of season clearance at Wally world super cheap a couple years ago, so that's good enough for me. I will be either refilling the KPL bottle if I can get it open or buying a bottle with the needle tip when it runs out, though. It makes getting a drop or two right on the pivot/bearings much easier than the plastic spout on the Hoppe's bottles.

Initially not a ton but what I'm hoping, based on past experience with an acid washed Burger that came with a ceramic detent, is that after a good amount of opening and closing to break it in the harder ceramic will smooth out the detent track.

I don't know how they do them at the factory but I'm assuming some kind of fixture in a small hydraulic press or something similar that can set them to a specified depth. I was basically smacking it a couple of times, measuring, smacking some more, etc., and hoping I didn't go too far.

No idea how others do it, but Grimsmo has it automated in one of their mills. It'll lightly install the ball, then probe it to figure how deep it is then press it in the desired amount.

So kind of the same idea, I figured that with modern computer controlled equipment it would be automatic, at least the seating part.

Haha now I'm imagining a worker sitting at a station with a press of some kind, manually placing the ball into the lockbar before the press seats it. Next to them is a stack of lockbars, and on the other side a bin full of detent balls. And then the bin gets knocked over, ten thousand detent balls go flying all over the place, and everyone is stepping on them and doing the cartoon running in place thing before falling down.

I'm pretty impressed with the build quality. Especially for the price if they're still doing the blowout that was posted earlier. I don't think another knife in that price bracket can touch it if the design speaks to you.

The two things I would change are the clip (already discussed) and the opening hole which either could be a bit bigger (but then the blade would have to stick up farther) or there could be a little ramp cut into the scale to make getting your thumb into it a bit easier. Like this:

She's stubborn as a mule and barks at everything but she's a great dog and has tons of energy. She'll chase kids all day long and then crash hard.
