I'm mostly interested in the handles, specifically the ring position and grip size. On a curved knife like a karambit, the ring position makes sense, same on the designs with the ring straight on the end of the handle.

This style is a different beast.

This one hangs tape well enough but it's only comfortable if it's held just so.

I'm trying to get something figured out that just falls into place in your hand.

This slimmer handle seems better but we'll have to see how it is with scales on it. I'm thinking that scales will be 1/8" on this one as well.

OK, since no one asked, interesting things I have learned in this search.

one standard parker (yay Wisconsin) size ballpoint refill will write about 300 pages of legal note pad.

one standard (euro/Pilot G2) size rollerball refill writes about 30 pages of legal note pad.

(I don't know how gel factors into all of this)

Generally all the japanese rollerball size refills like Pilot G2, Pentel Energel, Bic Gelocity (Bic is french, its gel rollerball is japanese), and Sharpie S Gel all write about the same, but really good. The S Gel might be a bit better. The G2 is a bit gloppy and wet (it smears). The others have a tighter line and dry faster (.7 tested in all of them). The Pentel Energel came with noticeably less ink.

There are proprietary rollerball refills from Montblanc, Sailor, Lamy, Cross etc. but they do not come into play looking for a serviceable refill for daily use at the office due to cost and being more difficult to find. I just picked up a bunch of the sharpie pens in blue and black for about $0.90 each.

In the parker G2 size, as Rob Low noted previously, the Monteverde Ceramic gel ink is a good choice. Schmidt P900 is solid and smooth. Schmidt also makes a Gelion gel rollerball.

Schmidt makes a gel rollerball refill named the P8126 that writes really nice. It is parker length, but just a bit larger diameter. Does not fit in my Saga. One of the pens it fits is the Retro 1951 Tornado. I have one of those coming to check out.

All the parker refills cost more than the rollerballs, but if the write that much longer, maybe a better value?

One of the Schneider P900s just blew up all over me, so not super excited about that.

The only pen that will take all of the above refills that I have is the BigIdea Ti. Seems to work well with everything I have thrown in there.

I have a couple other options coming as hosts. And one style that is an interesting variation on all of this, though I fear it will be too thick to hold. There is another one of the same type that is slimmer, maybe too thin, but it is out of stock.

To be continued...

I think it's a little thicker than I'd like for the design, so I may attempt to forge a piece thinner, but since I've been looking at Murray Carter's work lately I think I'm going to make a copy of one of his neck knives. I'm not sure which one yet, but it seems like a good fit for some Hitachi san mai(even if he prefers Hitachi "white")

A more modern style than I normally do but it's growing on me and a copy of it will likely find it's way into my daypack.

It's fun putting together something for someone and specifying the options exactly the way they want it. We're planning on CPM Cruwear for the blade and some navy blue/ denim micarta handle scales. Some sort of kydex taco sheath at the end but that's still on the drawing board.

I'm putting the effort into both this and the sleeveboard slipjoint designs so that I can add them into my offerings the future.

Is that knife comfortable to hold with both your pinky and index finger in the ring?(Not at the same time, obviously)

I'll usually take inspiration from a design I like but this time I'm going to try my best at making a copy.  In Carter's book, "101 knife designs", he has patterns and says something along the lines of "I've included these designs, they've done well for me and put food on my table, hopefully they do the same for you." That sounds like permission to use the design as it is to me.  I don't think I'd make some to sell without actually asking though.

Sy, is yours the original neck knife pattern?  I'm torn between that one, one called the "clave" and one that's name starts with a T and has a blade shape a lot like a Kershaw leek.

Could I talk you into measuring the thickness of the blade on yours?

My steel for the project is 1/8" and that seems pretty thick for a knife of this size.

No problem - mine was the "Perfect Neck Knife" which IIRC is a little larger than the original. It is also too large to be a neck knife IMO. I'm not a fan of that concept anyways though and carry it in a pocket with the lanyard attached to my belt. Glad it isn't any smaller - seems just right. Been meaning to make a belt sheath and or pocket sheath for it for way too long....

This is at the thickest part - the tang and spine taper from that area.

ETA - weird perspective, it is 7.5" OAL.

Also that's some oil not pitting on the hammered part.
