True from what I’ve seen so far.

Just for the hell of it, I searched BladeHQ (their site is easy to filter) for non chyna front flippers....
The cheapest USA made was 495
South Africa - 300ish

Seems like the best “budget” choice to avoid China would have to be Italy, Viper Knives in M390....at $140ish

Hey, that looks good, aside from the fact that you picked BHQ for the pic to grab.

Their filtering is the best I've seen, though.

That's actually a decent looking knife, and Viper makes good stuff AFAIK. Looks like it's on CollectorKnives for $126 on the micarta versions (green or natural).

I still use BHQ for research. Not purchasing.

I have had a couple Vipers. They were OK, but based on what I have heard about the other Maniago brands, they are the lesser brother. More hit or miss on fit and finish. Not bad, just not consistently good. For instance, I had a Viper Dan. It was OK, no real complaints, kinda clunky, had to adjust centering and sharpen it out of the box. Never really exuded quality feel. But it was OK for what I paid.

chicagoknifeworks has the Novis for $124 shipped too. Nice spec for the money.

Also, Italy is the China of Europe.

Thanks, I was worried I would get a response from someone whose opinion doesn't matter. (looking at you misery)

The bottle is eye catching. KFB2 texted me today to say the Sendik's by my house is selling them for $40 per bottle.  Looking online that seems to be a good price if the contents are worth a try. I checked the lineage, no Jim Beam affiliation, so figured it had a fair chance to be decent.

I always forget they're from IA. I was in HS when they first hit the scene. Our school was weird, half were rednecks, the other half were metalheads.

We're first by quite a bit on eggs as well. Last I saw we were roughly 20% of national egg production.

Doing a little googling, apparently my county of about 25,000 people marketed over 2.1 million hogs in 2017.

That's not so unique these days.

Re: hideousness, I honestly think that a big part of it is the increase in machinery/automation and decline in manual agricultural labor, across the midwest. Until only a few decades ago, a large portion of the population was employed in very labor-intensive occupations, and the "food culture" reflects that. A lot of high calorie foods, large portions, etc. Now that the majority of people don't perform manual labor for 8+ hours per day, all those calories just pile up. Highly processed foods don't help, either. The amount of sugar added to food, once you start to look, is mind-boggling.

You pulled an Op.

Speaking of Op, we are rapidly approaching 1000 pages here, only a few posts left. I am going to back of from posting to make sure I am not the douche that robs Op's opportunity to own 1000.

Picked up a couple things based on opinions here. I've had the WT Rye before and it isn't anything great but it is a good change of pace for manhattans. Looking forward to trying the EW BIB and Rare Breed. Oddly I've accumulated a really nice assortment of booze since the initial lockdown when I normally can't keep anything around. I guess I've been redirecting funds I'd normally be blowing at the pub.

Not sure if you got my reply last night. I sometimes wonder if the IMs here are 50/50 on getting through even when I see a confirmation.

Oddly, probably just in the sense that you hear things more when you're listening for them (like a word you just learned comes up three times the next week), a friend related this anecdote just the other day about when I was looking at your Momos saga reflecting on something completely unrelated. He said he was driving with his dad as a kid in a pig farm area and whining about the smell. Dad said "you know what a pig farmer smells here"? "Gross"? "No, money".
