I posted a few months ago about my wife picking up my camera and getting into the hobby. Well fast foreword, she has done a set of school pictures for a local day care. With another two booking her for school photos. She barrowed some equipment to get through the shoot. I am looking to find her some stuff that wont kill my credit card but still get a new boot through. I never got deep enough into the hobby to have much gear and no real idea of what to currently go with. Here is what I am assuming she used from what she was talking about... -Light Soft box and -a remote flash/strobe -Remote shutter control What are some recommendations? The camera is a Canon Rebel XS. I know older camera but still taking nice photos. But a new camera isn't within the budget right now with other priorities. |

Godox is going to get you the most bang for the buck. They make camera specific triggers for Canon so you can use advanced features like TTL (it picks power level for you). A few years ago I got a ton of stuff on the cheap from FB marketplace, but it's now apparently a haven for scammers. Links below are for Amazon. Godox SK400,.. this one has to be plugged in, no battery. Trigger for Canon Easy to use softbox A 4th item that might be helpful depending on the color of the walls at specific locations a reflector or second flash can be helpful as well. I would go with a reflector because it's cheap, doesn't need a battery, and it's potentially better for outdoor shoots depending on what the sun is doing. |

+1 on Godox/Flashpoint stuff. I’d like at the AD200 series as they’re the size of a speedlight but put out way more power. I’ve had 3 since they launched ~7 years ago and they’re still going strong. Super modular as well, so you can swap heads depending on usage. I’ll post some links for inexpensive but good stands, soft boxes, etc tonight. |

Here is where I am after looking at stuff with here. I am safe to assume Flashpoint and Godax are the same company? Flashpoint is Adorama house name, but with better customer service? Do I buy a flash from Amazon with their 3yr asurion protection plan or Adorama or B&H with allstate protection plan? Used, excellent gear from Adorama? Flashpoint OR Godax ? Canon trigger seems to be a go. Something about the flash clipping into this bracket...? Softbox she is looking at Tripod to hold the soft box up? |

Sorry for the delay, work was an absolute nightmare this week. Flashpoint is the Adorama version of the Godox system, just with US customer support and warranty service. The X-Pro trigger is older, but still works fantastic, it's what I have. I'd start out with the AD200 system over the 300/400 series, as it is far more modular, but the softbox and trigger are the right ones. I'd look at air cushion light stands and a weight bag for them. But overall that's a great starting setup. I'd look at one of the inexpensive 7:1 reflectors as well, they're $20 or less but pretty useful in a pinch. |
