Hell, I didn't even mind too much the tripled number of police officers, one in his plate carrier, to deter a kid who made a death threat a week before against one of my students.

Said kid only hits most all descriptors of your typical school shooter.  just skipped right on into work.

Hope it stays as nothing more than a threat and the kid gets the help he needs to get himself straightened out.

Sorry, no photos today.  Didn't really get all that much done, well, not all that photogenic.  They laid out some patterns for the bow planes, and a few more skin pieces.     Hopefully tomorrow, I'll get some good photos of some progress.

Update 9\22

It doesn't seem like we are getting very far each day, but the decisions being made and tested should do the project justice soon.

All of the anchors are now done and ready to go.  I went and bought more hardware for them tonight after school.  We also made the decision that the current set up for holding up our boat will not work much longer.  The stands will cut into the skin too easily, so we are going to make some new triangle shaped engine hoist type set ups.  I bought more 2x4s today and some sections of chain to hang the boat from.  It was a students idea, and I think it's going to work well .

The mine builders did some base coat painting today and they look pretty good.  I'll get some pictures tomorrow.  We were talking about adding some coral type texture to parts of them, but my builders are mixing this idea.  We will add some rust color as well as some green to the black.

As for the boat, the kids were working on getting some detail into part of the contour up front, as well as just getting more skin on it.  They also started getting some skin on the back of the conning tower.  It's going slow as we debate and try to figure out the best way to proceed.  I had to order more drawing boards today, as we've started running a little short.  My other beginning classes are using quite a few for pen and ink drawings as well as their pencil portraits.  Luckily, we should have enough to get through till the new shipment shows up.

Each 20x30 piece is $3.00 delivered.  I had to order 100.

Mistakes are costly in our skin, but they've done a good job of using mess ups and scraps on smaller sections.

My workers giving me crap for taking pictures, and being a pain in the ass about making sure the quality stays decent.

Update 9/23

Short Wed for curriculum development.

In the short time we had, we decided to get the first of our A frame hangers designed and built.

Here are the mines coming along well.  Tomorrow, rust paint.

I told them they looked like a bunch of city crew working on the roads.  I think one of them flipped me off.

This was a group think and discussion engineering session.

Successful hanging boat.  Tomorrow we will build the other A frame hangers.  These will allow us to add the skin without obstruction.   We can stick those little carts under these to roll the whole thing around if need be.

Yes, my budget is just overflowing, so taking a bunch of teenagers to Chicago on an overnight+ trip is definitely on my list of must have life moments.

Seriously, would enjoy that, but that is just not going to happen.

On another note, we had a Perkins Grant visit the last two days.  Today he took a tour of the school.  The principal ended up down at my room with him, even though my program is not tied to any of that money.

I gave him the tour of the sub project and he was astounded.  He hadn't even seen the Stagecoach yet.  It was pretty cool.  My principal was beaming with pride and thanked me personally, later , after our faculty meeting.

Thank you, I really appreciate the invitation.   It's been a long time since I've been to Chicago.  The Natural history museum was pretty cool. I enjoyed seeing the Lions of Tsavo.   I'd love to see the sub someday.  It'd be a good reason to go back and see it.

I'll let the kids know.  After we get some more detail paint on them, I'll try to get some close ups.  They are a little sketchy in some places, but they are going to pull off the look pretty well when done.

If you can suspend/support them just with the chains somehow that will add even more realism.

They will hang from the ceiling with fishing line.   The chain will just hang below them like in the picture.  It just won't come all the way to the floor, for obvious reasons.

Homecoming "float"    I say "float" because it's degenerated into just a bunch of kids riding on a trailer in a parade.

Really? That's new?

My high school in Indiana had a "drive your combine to school day."  14yr olds could drive them on the road so the parking lot always had about 60 of them and that was 20 years ago.

Update 9/25

Yesterday we had to redesign our second A-Frame.    To hang it at the height that was most comfortable to work with, it had to be wider for the middle of the boat.   Luckily, we can use the third A-Frame already finished on the back half of the boat.  Stupid.  We went there.

With our messed up homecoming schedules this week, we aren't exactly making any leaps forward in progress.   I'm hoping to get more of the boat skinned today, but it depends on how many of my horses are missing today.

It is not listing as much as I would have hoped.  Not sure it's a big deal.   With the diving it might be enough for the detail of the top of the boat to be seen when displayed.   We could take the hangers off and put a slight bend in the top too, but not sure that's such a good idea either.

You could increase the list by moving the attachment points to the bottom of the boat and adding eye bolts at the top to pass the chains through to hold the angle.

What great progress so far Guns! What do you estimate the weight of the half you are skinning now is? 150lbs?

Short Wed for curriculum development.

In the short time we had, we decided to get the first of our A frame hangers designed and built.

Here are the mines coming along well.  Tomorrow, rust paint.

I told them they looked like a bunch of city crew working on the roads.  I think one of them flipped me off.

This was a group think and discussion engineering session.

Successful hanging boat.  Tomorrow we will build the other A frame hangers.  These will allow us to add the skin without obstruction.   We can stick those little carts under these to roll the whole thing around if need be.

Not that I know of.    I haven't been doing these projects for that long, so there is hope.
