No matter what you do in a tech forum, DO NOT read the Resource links at the top, or any of the tacked threads before asking questions.  There's a good chance that questions from noobs have been answered at least 87⁸⁷ times, and your local moderators are patient, but worn out and bored by the repetition.  

Well the OP of the thread hasn't been on in almost 4 months and hasn't posted in almost 6 months, just sayin.





Maybe some of you guys could start dropping some links to this stuff you speak of in here so the rest of us could enjoy what we have been missing.

A poll taken during the first airplane on a conveyor belt thread had 60% of the membership voting that the airplane could not take off.  That was sad, infuriating, frustrating, and sometimes funny a few times.  How there were no melt downs resulting in bans (there were numerous meltdowns) is one of our Great Mysteries as emotion ran as high as we've seen in any topic discussed and argued.

The following story was one result:


This is the saga of the "Practical" ARFcommers (that know what the hell they are talking about), and the "Theoretical" ARFcommers that believe the airplane can’t take off, and their flawed logic.

This just in. There are two camps and only one camp that knows what they are talking about.

The practical camp states that the airplane will takeoff because the practical camp knows that the conveyor belt cannot affect the thrust of the airplane and the thrust is what propels the airplane down the runway.

The theoretical camp states the airplane will not takeoff because the theoretical camp bases their argument on the statement that the conveyor will match the wheel speed and that the if the wheel speed and the conveyor speed are the same, the airplane will have no forward air speed motion because the only way forward airspeed motion could occur is if the wheel speed is greater than the conveyor speed. Therefore, by definition, the plane will not take off. But sadly, they are wrong and will not have their feeble minds enlightened with scientific arguments.

For your enjoyment, I present below a future history of our situation as it may happen.

As luck would have it, the annual ARFcom meeting held in Miami this year coincided with the annual Swedish bikini team meeting also in Miami. The Swedish bikini team members were absolutely stunned after meeting a mere 4 per cent of the ARFcommers. Helga and Helena were overheard heaping praises on this 4 per cent.

Helga, "My God, it is a dream come true. These ARFcommers are not only very handsome, great conversationalists, and exceptionally romantic, but they are great dancers too."

Helena, "The only problem is there aren't enough of them to go around for all the bikini team members."

Helga, "But the guest list shows that there are 100 ARFcommers and 100 bikini team members, where are the rest of the ARFcommers?"

Helena, "They seem to be in a great argument about whether an airplane on a conveyor belt could take off."

Helga, "What can we do to stop them from argueing and get them to dance?"

Helena, "I have an idea, give me the microphone."

Helena. "May I have your attention please. The first annual Swedish bikini team and ARFcom dance will commence in five minutes. In order to break the ice and get this dance started quickly, my friend and team member Helga will draw a line down the middle of the convention hall. All of the Swedish bikini team members will line up on the right side of the line and all of the ARFcom members will line up on the left side of the line. We will play dance music and when the music stops both sides will cross half the distance to the line. The music will continue playing and stopping until we meet at the line."

At this point, a great moan was heard from the theoretically correct ARFcommers, because they were theoretically so smart that they knew that neither side would ever reach the line if each time the music stopped half the distance was crossed. All of the theoretically correct members were crestfallen and left the dance.

Fortunately for the Swedish bikini team, the practically correct ARFcommers all stayed and had a great time because they were so practically smart that they knew in a very short period of time they would be close enough to the Swedish bikini teamers that it wouldn't matter if they never reached the line. H_P


Then, the practical ARFcommers had pie and populated the world with more smart people.

It was a wonderful world of pie, witty reparte', and purty wimminz in thongs that couldn't speak English real well.

Also beer, I almost forgot that part.

Sometimes, someone asks about the fable of the theoretical ARFcommers; then the wise practical ARFcommers know it is time to gather everyone around to tell the story of conveyor belts and airplanes, and how the world lost 60% of its people because they refused to leave pride behind and drink from the Well of Enlightened, Secure, and Joyous Knowledge. Then, the older children draw balanced free body diagrams of the various and wonderful mechanical devices that help make their everyday lives so wonderful. The younger children practice solving problems of physics, and the other sciences, that are laden with tricks and deceptions designed to confuse the logical application of the Fundamental Truths of science. The practical ARFcommers know they must occasionally dip into the Well and remind their children that F=ma and will until the last star turns dark.
