The steel they put up to protect the bridge probably cost more than it would to dig it out and repave it.   Whatever the jurisdiction is probably has road crews on full time payroll already.

Idk about that. Norfolk southern paid $500,000 to raise the track already, but I'm guessing they got grant money. It wouldn't be cheap to complete tear the road up just to drop it another foot, and I'm sure there are complications to doing so beyond cost that I don't know about as a non-engineer. Off the top of my head, I'd think flooding would be a concern.

I recall there are oil/gas lines under the road, running parallel to the train line. It becomes real expensive to shut down the lines, dig them up, and rebuild them.

They did a couple a years ago.  They went as low as they could.  There’s a sewer under there that would be a bitch to reroute or impossible to change the grade of.

There’s a train track above it that they can’t change the grade of.

That would be a problem, but 181 crashes is a problem that you would think would be worth solving.

Why don't they put up a wall of hanging chains surrounding the intersection, but 6" lower than the bridge, so any idiot can immediately hear it hit the top of their truck before it happens. That would save the truck and the bridge and chain is damn sure cheaper than steel beams.

Durham NC and money well spent?

Lol

The city isn’t ran by Duke grads, not that that would make much difference these days.

Eta: It seems there may be infrastructure limitations inhibiting further modification.

It's already been mentioned by The Owner of the videos that there are sewers and such just below the streets.  Raising the bridge was cheaper and easier to do.

Putting the sensor on the height bridge is stupid. The sensor should be 1/4 mile away with a few more blinking signs.

There already IS a barrier in place.  THAT is what is pealing roofs. Automatic Red Light with a sign that lights up with OVERSIZE GO AROUND in place.  Everything but Truckers and the like that refuse to read the LOW BRIDGE signs.

THAT WAS GLORIOUS.  An old fashioned peel.

The US should spend another $1/2 million & lower the bridge again, and remove the idiot sign.  Make the morons dance for our entertainment.

I've read somewhere there are pipes or something underneath that are not practical to move and the bridge itself can only be raised so much due to grade for the trains.  Of course this can always be solved by throwing enough money at it, but I'm sure the steel beam isn't that expensive.

In my delivery driver days, I have been beside a box truck when it got eaten by that bridge (way before it was raised), crash art went everywhere and I nearly pooped my pants.

That overheight sign is lit fully five seconds before the hit:

Attachment Attached File

Speed limit is 25 mph, with a 12'-4" height warning sign (driver's responsibility to know the height of his vehicle).  Note that this is in the middle of a business district, so the height sensor has to be pretty close.

Attachment Attached File

Five seconds at 25 mph is 180 feet, plenty of time and space to stop.

I have no doubt the rental places in that area warn renters that:
1. That bridge is there.
2. The extra insurance does not cover hitting the bridge.

Never gets old.

Isn't it technically like 12'4" now or something and that's why there's less action?

Government kills everything I enjoy.

Not practical here.  There are several businesses that truck traffic go that are to the left and/or right at that intersection.  Trucks headed there that aren’t too stupid to hit the bridge would be hitting the chains all day long.

I guess they could put chains up a few feet before the bar to warn people who are creeping up and not sure if they can fit, but it wouldn't help for anyone going 35mph.

We have a low one in Augusta GA on Olive road. Gets hit all the time. Truck knocked one of the steel beams off it this past Feb. and they just finish building it all back at the same height it has always been. Rental truck place I used once years ago had a big sticker on the dash with a warning about the road and bridge.
