Just a heads up - if you missed it in my other thread on Sam’s Club deals. Local store had Tequila Ocho Plata La Loma 2020 for $34.95.
I’ve read that Ocho actually started out as an experiment to test the effect of agave from different terrier have on taste. This one is one of the great ones..... but they are all really good. ETA: walked into a local grocery store that I never visit and saw (3j bottles of Del Maguey Vida for $22/ea. Clerk said they were delivered by mistake. Now I really need to find some good mezcal cocktail recipes. |

Great thread, very informative. So who started the tradition of salt and lime before/after taking a shot of mezcal/tequila?
I never did the salt, lime thing and while in Mexico never saw anyone use it except in the tourist spots. Some people I worked with in the past didn’t know where the whole salt and lime thing came from and they grew up in Mexico and immigrated here legally. |
|
|
Thank you. I just noticed my question was answered on the first page. The first time I read the thread I skimmed through it and missed what you wrote about the salt. That looks delicious and refreshing. If I can find a recipe I might try it.

View Quote I like the 110 in cocktails, but it's a little too hot for my tastes neat. I have been wondering how the Excelencia is, looking forward to your review. Old Town sold me a bottle of the San Matias XA when I first went in there a couple of years ago. I remember thinking it was good, but I had not tried very many XA's at the time so I can't recall many details on it. |

I picked up a couple of the std single barrel bottles because I know I like them. I passed on the Laphoig one because I wasn't sure what to make of it. I need to make a stop at that place to see what have on the shelf now - I have learned that I always want to have a bottle of a Tesoro store pick repo on the shelf, they are so good. |

FYI I was in the area so I stopped at the AZ store I mentioned before - They have about 45 bottles of the El Tesoro Laphroaig Anejo, and probably 30+ bottles of the single barrel El Tesoro Repos on the shelf. I passed on the Laphroaig pending some reviews, but I picked up 2 of the single barrel repos and a bottle of Tahona blanco.. I wish I was closer to this store because they seem to have a pretty good selection of agave stuff

Surprisingly it isn't slap you in the face with the peat at all. But it almost comes across with some chardonnay notes from the soft lactic citrusy flavor of islay and a strong oak and smoke. The peat then shows up mostly on the finish. Really interesting and very good. I nursed a few glasses over a couple hours and as it opened up the sweetness of the agave became way more apparent (in a good way). Definitely crack it open! I wanted to give my opinion on the Tequila Ocho La Ladera 2020 I picked up. Here’s a pic of the label description….
Attached File The front label states bottela no. 118,440 - not sure if , in fact, they produced over 100k bottles of this - that seems really high. I personally didn’t get much of any citrus flavor or smoke from it. Not quite “ minerally” but definite earthy flavor - almost moldy , which I didn’t like. VERY viscous and mildly sweet. I didn’t care for it too much neat but was good in a Margarita and am looking forward to trying a Paloma or other cocktail. |

That is a super high brix, so I expect the viscous but would have thought the sweetness would be the big note. |

Picked up a single barrel El T, some (more) Tequila Ocho and one recommended by the staff: La Gritona. While they had a lot of mezcals, other than the Bozals, nothing jumped out at me. |

There's a tequila festival Saturday the 14th at Resorts World in Vegas. $100 to get in, looks like a sizeable selection for tasting, with at least a few really good ones.

This thread needs a bump.
Attached File I tried this today. Wow, if you’re a bourbon lover, you will be all over this. Tons of barrel characteristics and enough agave to please your tequila itch. It is more barrel focused, so try it with that in mind. |

The Cascahuin Tahona is pretty good.
There is a less expensive non-tahona version Cascahuin that they sort of recommended. I haven’t tried the Arette. |

I was able to try the Arette Artesenal Blanco, and I really like it. It's additive free and the agave is front and center. I still don't think I'm very good at articulating what I like/don't like about tequilas, but this one tastes really clean. The agave is front and center, some mineral and minty flavors to me. The finish is light without any kind of bite or aftertaste that I get with some other blancos. This is one that I will keep in my rotation at the current price point ($50).

So I'm going to be flying back from cancun later in the week. It looks like they have a lot of Don julio at the duty free. Any of it worth checking out?
