[Last Edit: paul463]
Totally my fault.  I was changing the distributor this week, I wasn't in a hurry so Thursday night I dropped it in and figured I do the wiring this weekend.  So I wired it up, only two wires need to be hooked up under the dash.  Fires right up and runs for a minute or so, then poof, fire everywhere.  It was right THEN I remembered I had to take the rear line off the carb and I never put it back on.  So it pumped a big puddle of gas on the floor until something lit it off.  I knocked it down with a small fire extinguisher then ran to the garden hose on the house and finished it off.  The paint fix isn't that big a of a deal, but the soot and shit got on everything and made a mess.  And a half  bucket of hydraulic oil melted and spilled that crap all over.

Truth is I think the gas mostly burned itself off by the time I got the hose out.  I knew the hose wouldn't kill the gas fire, I just wanted to keep anything else from catching.  A million thoughts at once.  I got lucky.

That sucks to see.  I'm very glad you weren't injured, and hope the damage to the truck isn't too bad.

This is why I have 4 20lb extinguishers mounted on the walls around my garage. Plus a couple 10lb near the door.

Worth every penny.

The truck isn't too horrible, I built it from the ground up so I can fix it.  Some burnt wires near the distributor and a little heat damage to the headliner, and of course the paint.  No real damage in the garage other than the soot and hydraulic oil spill.  And my prescription safety glasses got flung off in the chaos, I haven't found them yet.
There was enough heat to melt some cheap plastic trophies on a shelf near the ceiling.   I hung out in the shop for four hours doing fire watch and cleaning up.

Just glad I didn't lose the whole works.  Mill, lathe, etc, etc, etc, all live out there.

IDK, could just spray a layer of clear over the fire damage and leave it as a rat rod.

Glad it didn't turn out worse for you though. Got two extinguishers hanging at each end of my smaller shop, guess I ought to check their charges now.....

Damn glad you are OK and the damage was kind of limited.

I have had a few people tell me I'm kind of nuts to have fire extinguishers all over but they are for stuff just like this.

Got off easy. What's damaged can be replaced, YOU, can't. Glad you're ok, Brother. Water doesn't work on gas fires. Don't ask me how I know. It spreads the fire like a MF. Don't ask me how I know that either. No, wasn't me. Some other poor SOB I couldn't do anything for when he made that mistake. CO2 is becoming more of a favorite but dang, that's expensive. Dry chemical, 8lb or more. Kidde makes "shop" ones, but I prefer the Amperex. Make sure you get the refillible ones that have metal valve bodies, not that plastic crap. Oh. And those fire blankets. Home Depot has a sale

Glad you’re okay and can salvage everything. Your story made me cringe because as much as I hate to admit it I’m prone to making bonehead mistakes like that too.

Same here.

Years ago, my dumbass was trying to figure out an idle issue on a Jeep 4.0L in a Wrangler.  Drove the Jeep around, well up to operating temp, then parked it back in the garage.  "Let's see if I'm still getting good fuel pressure at the rail", so I hit the schrader valve on the rail....of course, 40psi of pressure sprayed fuel everywhere, including right on the exhaust manifold.  Thankfully, nothing ignited.  Now, I keep multiple fire extinguishers in every shop (and always within arms reach when working on fuel stuff).

Hydraulic oil makes one heck of a mess. (I've had a spill before, accidentally)  just 1 drop looks like 10 gallons.

I burned a GT350 Suzuki to the ground once, and it wasn't even mine. Was working on it for a friend and didn't have the money to properly replace it.

You got lucky, and yeah, you did good.

To this day I can still tell which sockets of mine are from the first set I ever bought because the fire extinguisher crap stained them all a gold color while the box set next to the bike as it burned.
