There are a few recipes I like that call for crushed pecans or walnuts as a topping.  I'd like to be able to make them with an alternative.  I was thinking maybe crushed pretzels for a casserole topping, or those French Fried Onions.

Another recipe for cheese balls calls for them too, but crackers would get soggy.  In the past I've used grated cheese to stick to the outside, but something crunchy might be nice, as long as it doesn't absorb moisture from the cheese and lose the crunch.

Any ideas?

Just skip the topping altogether. What dishes are we talking about?

A damn coonass allergic to pecans .  Can you eat sunflower or pumpkin seeds?  Crushed pretzels should be more resistant to moisture.  Rice Krispies may be another option

How about roasted soybeans or chickpeas ?  Same with wasabi peas (roasted). A couple of pulses in a blender or food processor would get you a crunchy, salty, gritty stuff to use as a topping.

Cashews aren't specifically nuts and might be tolerated by some people.

Ramen noodles crushed up (if added right before serving) might work.

The artificially created Bacon Bits (not crumbles) barely taste like bacon but are salty and crunchy.

What kind of nut like products are you NOT allergic to?

A crushed and toasted granola might work. What are you looking for taste wise, for salty, slightly sweet, just a crunchy topping?

If a veg casserole, minced cooked well bacon can't go wrong for many different veggies as a topping, add the cooked bacon at the last couple of minutes so it doesn't overcook.

Yeah it sucks.  Used to eat pecans, pralines, pecan pie as a kid, but over time I developed an allergy.  Lips swell up, throat closes, it's terrible.  I eat sunflower seeds all the time.  Same with peanuts, I eat them no problem.  It's just tree nuts like pecans, walnuts, almonds etc that I can't eat.
