Honestly I have been lucky they have never messed with me.
Few times as a kid by the basketball hoop, pool, or campsite no issues all year. Fall comes, the leaves fall and giant hives became visible just feet from where I was always playing. Those ground hornets, fuck them. Burn them alive. Forgot 2 years ago one small hive was built in between my front door and storm door. I went through there a few times before I noticed it. Killed those ones. |

I got attacked by some last year while re-roofing my cabin. I had no idea that there was a basketball-sized nest of bald faced hornets hanging under the eve. As I slammed a board down onto the roof, I heard what sounded like a mini-gun going off. WTF? I quickly found out the noise was a swarm of bald faced hornets buzzing around in a raging fury. One locked eyes with me, dive-bombed toward me, and hit my face so hard that it knocked itself out on the orbital bone under my eye and fell to my feet. I scrambled down off that roof so fast it's a wonder that I didn't get injured in the process.
To eradicate them, I hopped into my vehicle armed with cans of hornet spray. I backed up alongside the cabin, parallel to it, as close as I could get to the nest. I cracked open the driver window just enough to squeeze the nozzle of the hornet spray through. I then let out a solid blast and quickly closed the window as the raging defenders started dive-bombing the side of my vehicle. They sounded like hail hitting my window. A few series of the above steps did the trick.

I kill everything that flys onto my porch with one of these.... fyi, it will light your ass up, so put it away when around drunk friends. Or put it out for giggles

If they build a nest that's out of the way of your normal activities, leave them alone. They'll eat a ton of noxious insects from your garden.
Around dwellings, though, is no bueno. |

I'm not afraid of bees or wasps in any way shape or form... those little fuckers scare the shit out of me. Seen two nasty nasty reactions to them.
