Before you buy it? I had an 8' piece of 4/4 white oak that I tried to cut into 3.5" inch strips. After about 30 minutes and after slamming the board on the ground, I had a 3.5" strip. The second 3.5" strip, from the same board, cut with no issues. So, is there any way to tell if a piece of lumber is case hardened before you buy it? |

Only if the seller allows you to rip a short length. (See if the cut part pinches in) I don't think there is any other way Or just start ripping your board on the band saw. Tends not to be as much trouble that way, and no dangerous kickback potential. Then do more precise cut to width on the table saw, taking off just a little from the band sawn edge. |
