Maybe I’m just OCD…..but I just hate having people touch my vehicles (aka: taking them to a shop).
I turn my own wrenches on my vehicles, but there are some things I just don’t have the time or tools to deal with…..State Inspections, wheel/tire work, alignments, window tint, stuff like that.

I don’t know what it is….but I just hate the thought of someone else setting in my seats, getting their dirty feet on my floor mats, using impact wrenches on stuff, getting their greasy hand prints all over the outside of the car, getting up under the hood, etc, etc, etc….. More times that not, I can go back and find things that didn’t do right, or half-assed.

If you are a car guy, and you care about your stuff……face it, nobody is ever going to take as good of care of your vehicle as you would.

I’ve seen enough youtube videos of guys taking vehicles for “test drives” and rodding the hell out of them…or dropping tools on the cars and scratching them, or any other number of bone head things…that it just makes me nervous handing the keys over to someone.

Anyone else like this??

I am with you op. I have the first new truck i ever bought. Y'all laugh, but it is a 1998 nissan frontier garage kept with 190k miles. The only significant issues where i could not fix them and had to go to a shop, they would break tab holders, not replace bolts or put mismatched bolts in....

It is a standard transmission. I took it for an inspection and the fucker didn't know how to drive a stick. I lost my shit.

All in all, in 21yrs, i think i am just under $3k in non PM related repairs.

2 instrument cluster rebuilds
1 harmonic balancer and front seal
1 water pump
3 sets if shocks
2 control arm bushings
1 lock mechanism
1 valve cover gasket
2 headliners
1 radio

Yep, agreed. I have rules for my wife who I'm the most lenient with as far as passengers go. No makeup, no, food, no drinks, no dogs, etc. Most people say I'm a dick, maybe I am.

ETA: I keep new vehicles, so oil changes and tire rotations are done by me.

I never thought I would be there, but I am almost there too.  I had all the parts and tools to rebuild a front end.  I sold the truck, bought a new one, and sold all of the parts and tools.

I have a slow leak on my Mule side by side and I don't want to fuck with it.  I will, but I just don't want to.

This is why I hate handing my keys over to anyone.....

I'm guessing that the guys saying "I don't care ..a car is just transportation" are the same guys that never vacuum, clean out, and wash/wax their vehicles on a regular basis either.

To each their own I guess...

I don't mind other people doing things / touching my vehicles but I ask that you do it correctly.

For example - If my top on my Vette leaks and I ask you to keep it inside while it's at your shop, I expect that it is done. I don't leave it out when its raining, I don't want you to either.

Don't try to rig anything or do shoddy work, because if I find it, I won't be happy. I brought my old Suburban in for something they had to remove the tire a few years ago and when I got it back I noticed the center-cap for the wheel had one of the fake lug nuts broken off. I kidded that they used the torque wrench on it rather than taking the cap off and getting to the real lug nuts. They denied it, but how the fuck do you really think that happened?!?

Well, MY "Come To Jesus" moment was a few years ago when I spent 3-4 days rebuilding the Transaxel on a Hyundai I was using as a work car.  I broke out the Chilton's manual, tore the whole thing apart in the front yard, spent hours/a couple of days rebuilding it and sure-as-shit, two days after I got it back on the road the timing chain/belt broke and ate the engine good. lol

I don't mind that much when I take my truck in for service. The dealer doesn't do bad... they put paper mats down on the floor. The only thing that annoys the FUCK out of me with that is if some short fucker drives my truck and moves the seat way up, or dicks with the recline.

But what really chaps my ass is when I come out and find a HUGE ass dent in my door. Two years my truck has been fine, and I'm not usually parked in crowded lots. I work nights, and there's almost nobody in the lot at that time. I park the truck in my garage to keep it clean. Well, a couple weeks ago, I come out to my truck and there's a lovely dent in the driver's side back door with a nice 1/4" chip down to the steel under the paint. Someone didn't just open their door into my truck, they threw that shit open with the force of an angry tornado!  And the fuckers just left. Fuck people like that. Fuck them with a bundle of rusty coat hangers. I don't care if coat hangers don't rust, I'm going to find some!!

I thought you meant like leaning up against the vehicle. I hate that too.

Yeah, don't want anyone wrenching on my car. Last time I had a vehicle brought in for alignment, they nearly stripped out a torsion bar jam bolt by raming the two jamnuts together. I had to use a breaker bar to get it undone and the threads were distorted. The other side, they left the jamnut loose, like they didn't even know there were two nuts. I checked the tie rod jam nuts, they were tighter than hell. No wonder every place struggles to get them undone.

The other place I went to (for inspection and alignment) before that told me a rear suspension bushing was bad. I questioned them about it, said it didn't look bad. I said I'd do the work myself. Only a $13 bushing (that they wanted $47 for, of course) was all that was needed, but it involved taking the whole rear suspension apart. Got it apart and the bushing was fine. The thing they were talking about that was a crack was flashing from when the bushing was made. Midas of South Burlington VT, don't go there. And they got my floormats dirty.

Only thing I don't like to do is paint. So I had my rear quarter panel done a few years back. Guy did a good job on the quarter panel, but then he did a "freebie" buffing, and put swirls all over the car (if you look close).

My dad has a lift, and I do all my own work. Not because I like to, but because I'm the only person I trust to do it right.

I’m trying to train my kids out of my wife’s bad habits with regards to cars. It’s a losing battle.

They eat in the car, don’t take out their garbage when they get out, touch every surface with filthy hands.

I’m with you OP.  After getting oil pan plugs fucked up, plug wires laid across exhaust manifolds so they can pull my perfectly good air filter to try and sell me another one, hitting the axle seal surface with a cut off wheel while removing the wheel bearings, trying to tell me they cannot torque my lug nuts to the specs I gave them due to wheel spacers, bad transmission rebuilds,  I just try to do all I can.

There's a garage on a road I take to bypass traffic and stop lights. For a hundred yards on either side of their location the road is covered with tire tracks from burnouts.

Would I ever take one of my vehicles there? Hmmmmm, let me think about awhile.
