You can sneer at it being a "sport," you can hate the name, hate the marketing, but there is something very positive and American about e-sports. In a world where everyone gets a trophy, where high school football coaches get fired because their team scored too much, e-sports is a bastion of winner-take-all competitive spirit. The games are something that can be related to by the youth of today; they understand the rules, they can play a pick-up game with their friends, they can aspire to some level of competitiveness. And when they watch it played professionally, they can revel in having someone to root for, in something they care about.
No, it's not as physically demanding as traditional sports. But it's still a contest of skill, even if they're skills you don't value. It's meritocratic in a world that increasingly hates merit. |

He is far from alone as well. I am sure you can call him a fucking nerd all you want. He won't care. That's an extreme example. The odds are about the same of a college football player, making it to an NFL super bowl win but there are many who make a very respectable living, playing video games competitively. You thinking it's dumb doesn't change reality. |

We have used the term sports to describe contests that are not all that physically demanding. Curling for instance is an Olympic sport... I think trap and skeet are as well. Generally I don't think golf is all that physically demanding, abet it might be mentally demanding and it certainly is very competitive and requires skill, practice, etc...
Still all of those are physically in the real world. Then there are competitive athletic events that are in the virtual world. Especially since covid, virtual athletic competitions (using machines) allowed people to train and compete with other's around the world. I don't know which all real sports have a virtual option - but I suspect biking and rowing certainly do. Golf, shotgun - they both could. No reason indoor shooting could not have virtual contest - mail in contest used to be fairly common. e-sports, well video games require skill and competition - but no, I don't think they should be sports either. |

The hand eye coordination and reaction time of some of these guys that compete in FPS, is absolutely insane. It's to the point that just like in traditional pro sports, age matters, fast. By the time a pro gamer on the FPS circuit hits about 30 years old, they often retire. Not because they want to or they got bored. They have become too slow. They often start losing pixel accurate split second flick shots, too often to the comparatively younger, faster competition. It all sounds a little weird and dumb to the outsider and I get that, because we aren't talking about traditional sports. They aren't running down an interception on prime time TV. But think about that for a second. By 30, they have become too slow. It's that cut throat. Many by that age "go out to pasture" and their pro careers are over. The legends become paid coaches to the new players climbing the ranks, that are still lightning fast. |

Nope, has zero impact on me. If someone else wants to play video games or doesn't good for them. Odds of a young person making some money off esports/streaming or whatever is probably greater odds than a certain segment of the population that think they are going to make it big in the NFL/NBA/MLB etc.. Even before the pandemic more money was brought in via video game sales than movies.

And American football is?, where you have a bunch of snowflakes who won't run into each other unless they're wearing more armor than the Knights of Camelot? Amen brother. Contrast that with the sport that I watch in the winter, Major Arena Soccer. Guys are bashing into each other, with only shinguards, landing on concrete floors covered with Astroturf. Much faster paced than the NFL, no kneeling. Bodies flying, somebody is injured fairly frequently, etc. While not typical of what happens there, check this video out from last years playoff game. Goalie runs out to get the ball, and he and a teammate run into each other, resulting in him flying into the air and landing very badly on his neck/shoulder. I thought for sure the guy just broke his neck or was dead. Thankfully he "only" got an concussion and after a short stay in the hospital was okay. I've got a full-motion racing simulator (https://www.simcraft.com) that I use along with iRacing to prepare for upcoming races - it's an AMAZING tool - it's also a BLAST to practice on as it's amazingly realistic. From time to time I'll race others on it - there's obviously a huge amount of folks who do this - and even profit from it - a lot of "e-sports" leagues etc....NASCAR is doing it etc....I've never gotten into any of that but I really do value simulation as a learning tool. I use it to get better / faster in the real world. That's the goal, to me. And the founders of SimCraft.
