Quoted: In the 70's and early 80's my local, very rural newspaper actually had a column on the front page announcing folks travel plans. The locals would notify the paper of their plans,I guess for bragging rights. Even redneck criminals figured that out real quick. View Quote Reminds me of the shit birds who would burglarize houses during funerals when they knew for sure everyone would be gone at a specific time, and possibly the neighbors as well. |

My prior employer used to post people's Business Trips and approved PTO on the company website. I had to explain why putting "Mech will be away in Mexico for the next week" where all my dirt bag coworkers could read it was a bad idea.
They stopped. |

I am going for a trip across country next week. I don't cares who knows about it. Packing up the van Saturday and leaving first thing Sunday morning. My biggest worry? Someone will move into my spot down here by the river.

My coworkers and immediate neighbors know when I’m gone so they can keep an eye on the place but we always have a house sitter anyway since we have a bunch of dogs and cats so it’s never truly empty here. I make sure my wife doesn’t post pictures of our vacations until after we are back though

I figure that if the attention whores who constantly feel the need to boast about their whereabouts on social media get their stuff looted, then that's karma.

I’m paranoid as well. I canceled the newspaper because of this reason alone. The only one I tell is my next door neighbor (a retired single lady). Besides that, I have light timers all over and do my best to make the house look occupied. A camera in the front notifies me of a package delivered and I get someone to pick it up so there’s no sign of a vacation
I’ve driven by other homes in the neighborhood where there’s a stack of newspapers piling up at the end of the driveway. Plain stupid |

I don’t go anywhere for “vacation” because I’m poor. But if I did, I’d tell maybe 3 people.
My neighbor, who I trust with my life My family, who I trust more than that And the person at the hotel desk If you’re not one of those people, then you don’t need to know. |

Our house is out in the sticks. Awesome view, hot tub, room for dogs to run. We give my inlaws from town the keys to the place and some gas money and they are more than happy to move in for the duration of our trip. They even bring their own guns. My wife can post ever minute of our trip online and I don't have to worry about it.

I tell friends as these things usually come up in conversation.
I tell my boss and a few other managers at his level so that everything can get coordinated and I'm not bothered while on vacation. I tell a coworker that lives near by and she checks for mail and packages and makes sure the place hasn't burned down. I do the same for when her family is out on vacation. Neighbors and everyone else can find out after the fact. |

Quoted: My wife use to do that all the time. I had to jump her ass several times (along with the kids) to quit posting pics from the beach or telling the entire world our plans unless they wanted to come home to a ransacked house. We went to Hawaii about 5 years ago. It was killing her to not post pics of everything we did. I did tell her to send pics to the kids, but they had to know to not post up on Instafacetwittergram. Years ago on Nextdoor a neighbor was posting vacation pics and bragging about where they were. I sent her a PM telling her she should delete these posts and sent pics of her house various times of the day showing how no one was home(they were around the corner from me) and showed her how easy it would be to go through their home while they were away since they were so proud of their vacation and announcing to the world no one was home. She about shit herself, took everything down and publicly thanked me after the trip and warned others to not be stupid like she was. View Quote You should have burgled her house and then told her , "sorry, I let you know to late" |

Everyone is on a need to know basis. Everyone. Not because I'm paranoid. Because it's none of their business and they don't need to know. Simple.

Not telling people online or advertising a trip isn't paranoia or living in fear. It's just smart. Why do they need to know unless they are checking on your place and grabbing the mail? And so many people post their vacation plans on Facebook these days, no one is impressed by it. They'll just mutter under their breath about wishing they could take a vacation right now and that's the end of it. It certainly isn't flexing on anyone. It's just dumb.
