An awesome guy (Arfcommer) is selling me 2 cars but I need to get them from TN to Central, TX. I sold my trailer to a guy 3 years ago and he is letting me borrow it but I don't have a tow vehicle. So far I have learned that for each trip to get one car per trip:
Home depot F250 utility bed truck - Cheap and unlimited mileage but cannot leave the state. HD employee said they are GPS tracked. Penske 16' moving cargo truck. Gas truck and the fuel consumption sucks. Around $900 plus taxes. Uhaul 16' moving truck. Same as above but around $1K Enterprise truck rental for an F250 crew cab with $.29 per mile (600 free miles) come out to about $1100 with tax Longhorn rental company (Local company) for an F250 or 2500 Silverado with mileage, fees and taxes is around $1100 Local hotshot hauler guy said he'd go get them both for $2500 Turo is the cheapest for a crew cab 1/2 ton truck at around $600 with their mid-range insurance. I have USAA full coverage but I know they won't cover anything through a 3rd party rental or "Ride sharing" company like Turo. Still waiting on 2 other quotes but I'd guess they will be in the same $2500 range. Enterprise rental 1/2 ton trucks are not tow capable and do not have hitch receivers or wiring supposedly. I really don't have $2500 to spend on hauling them so I am trying to figure out a better way. I'm not willing to rent a huge U-haul moving truck and put one of the cars inside of it. I could break it up and go get one car now and get the other one a few weeks after if the seller is willing to give me that time. Anyone have a guy that hauls stuff like this that they would suggest? |

Run some wiring and steel cables to slave-link all their cruise controls and steering boxes.
|
|
Turo rentals may have some clauses against towing depending on the owner of the vehicle. Could end up costing you more.
|
|
Cheaper hotshot hauler. Then look at all of the rental options moving where you pick up and return sometimes saves many dollars
|
|
|
Get the longshot driver to grab them for you.
Maybe ask if you can tag along and if he'd be willing to lower his price if you share some of the crab meat. |
|
What kind of cars? Depending on the size, I don't know that I'd pull two vehicles with a privately-owned rented pickup, especially a 1/2 ton.
Longhorn has always treated me good. But why not drive them home (unless they're not road-worthy) |
|
How old trailer? What’s the maintenance been? A blow out or two which is far from unheard of on older chinabombs could end up costing more than the hotshot

@PhuzzyGnu is a car hauler based in TX.
He might be able to get you pointed in the right direction. |

On the ad it says "Towing hitch included for big jobs" so I would assume it's ok. The shitty thing is, you cannot contact the owner for questions until you've booked the vehicle. So dumb. |

I just dealt with shipping my car from 1000 miles away, and it was the most ridiculous waste of money. I have a puppy, and I have a job that pays by the hour, and I live alone. In the end, I don't know, it still wasn't worth it.
If your local hotshot isn't contracting the work out to someone else, it doesn't sound "unreasonable", but two at once is a big time/logistics savings for them, even if it's just a 4-car trailer (or less). Maybe offer a reasonable amount lower, especially if you're considering that you have 3+ other options, and can just walk away. |

You can buy a road worthy wedge trailer for 5 grand. Then sell it for 5 grand

Try Shipley dot com.
Just got a Polaris UTV Ranger CREW 1000 hauled from upstate NY to Idaho for $1450 - Guy was pulling a 36' gooseneck with a dually pickup |

I have a couple collector cars that I had transported in an enclosed semi trailer. From Florida to North Carolina it was about $850 each. They picked them up and dropped them off at my new home.
Easy peasy as it cost me about $500 round trip using my own trailer and truck to haul plus about 10 plus hours each direction. |
|
Ask dealers about an extended three or four day test drive.
once you make the trip, return the truck with no express guarantee you will buy it after. might work? Other than that, I got nothing but my 2500 Silverado and a two car bumper pull trailer. |

Are you an AAA member? They'll tow one up to 200miles closer to home.
If not, join and buy premium $87 membership as "N Nutro". Then join as "Nutro N Nutro". Then join as "N N Nutro". Then join as "Nutro Nutro Nutro".... |

View Quote Honestly the best bet is to find a broker and get the cars on a transport basically on a "standby" basis with no time frame guarantee. Every car on a transport is revenue and if OP is patient he might get lucky and find a guy that is passing through and might get one on a truck here and there. He'll end up with some Slavic dude in a track suit looking like a Call of Duty bad guy. |

Buy a thousand buck beater truck, find a guy with a decent sized forklift, pay him a couple of cases of bud light to stack the cars onto the bed of the truck, drive home, back up into a berm until the cars fall off, and sell the truck.
|
|
In the first post clearly state which of the two vehicles can be driven that distance as is.

I deal with hotshots routinely, $2500 from TN to TX for two cars is reasonable.

Put a hitch on one vehicle. Rent a dolly one way for the other one.

If you have 2-3 weeks to spare, get quotes from the big car shipping companies. They will bombard you with emails, and when you haven't responded after week one, they will lower their price. After week two they will lower the price another 100-200 bucks. After week three the price drops another $50.
My lowest quote was $1200 for shipping a 7000lb vehicle 2200 miles. My first quote was $1500. |

About six months ago I bought a somewhat uncommon collector car in Los Angeles, started to drive home, broke down beyond any hope of fixing it in Las Cruces, New Mexico. Rented an Expedition from Hertz and a U-Haul trailer in El Paso and towed it to Tampa in violation of every rental contract and insurance policy ever written
