Many moons ago ('bout 25 years) I had a big ol' cyst on my back (upper left side).  Didn't cause me any trouble, but the lump was ugly-looking, so I had my sawbones Ginsu it out.  Took a while to heal, hair sprouted from the scar, and to this day, I have a divot on my back where it was removed.

FFW to a few months ago, when I sprouted another one (l. side, just below shoulder blade).  This one itched, & I told Frau Doktor about it.  She wanted me to get a Polaroid, to see what kind it was b4 she did anything.  With as busy as I am, I was like, yeah, yeah, I'll get right on that.

Couple weeks ago, I'm stripped down to hop in the shower, and it itches again.  I back up to the sharp edge of the door frame to scrape/scratch at it, and...

This is the part where you might not want to click.

Again told Frau Doktor about it, and apparently that answered her question about what kind it was, b/c she told me I didn't need to get a Polaroid now.  She just said I could get a surgeon to Ginsu it, if I wanted.

Anyone else have to deal with this?  I suppose two cysts in 25 years is nothing to really complain about, but it's certainly a less than lovely aspect of being alive.  I suppose my only two options are to continue to "express" it, or have it Ginsu'ed.

Disclaimer , I watch dr pop zit videos.   He routinely cuts open cysts,  he says just draining it isn't enough. It'll just come back. The cyst wall needs to be removed.

fpni. you’ll probably need the sac holding the cyst removed otherwise it can and will grow back unfortunately.

OP I had 6 of them removed from my scalp last year. It all started with one of them getting infected and me having to go to the ER to get it lanced to remove the puss and the pressure. So i understand what you are saying.

Good news is I have 4 more starting to grow now so that's fun.

I have had three.

One in my earlobe that a doc cut out.

One on my stomach that popped when i was moving some boxes and I just finished it off and made sure to get the sac.

One on my cheek that I chopped my self once it was about pea sized.

None have come back as the sac was removed each time.

Dad had three removed from his head.

They had all solidified.
Were sent for testing and results came back good.

Runs on my dad's side I've had them my whole life. I'm diabetic and if I let my numbers get out of wack they're worse.

Warm compress as soon as you feel it.  This will usually cause it to head and rupture. I've also used pride drawing black salve. When I use the salve it usually leaves a hole.
I've never had to have one lanced but I've gotten cellulitis from popping them a couple times.

Cellulitis. Huge reason why folks should see a dermatologist if they have one and not try to handle themselves. That stuff can be really bad. If not taken care of you could lose limb or life.

Had it once and went to ER.  Streaking, redness, swelling, etc.  Doc said I was about a day or two from spending a month in the hospital with IV antibiotics.  He drew pen on my arm, gave me likely the strongest antibiotic there is and said “if redness or streaming  go outside what I’ve marked go to ER immediately.

Your skin is the most amazing defense there is. But if stuff gets beyond that…we’re pretty weak.

I have one in the middle of my back between my shoulder blades.

I got a full thickness sunburn when I was in junior high and the cyst formed where the burn was the worst.

I had one on my back that sometimes got itchy.  It never bothered me.  Never popped or drained. It bugged the hell out of my wife because she could see the little bump when I wore a t-shirt.  I went through the VA and had it removed.  Now I have a little pink butthole looking scar on my back and my wife is happy when I wear t-shirts.

Having two primary care docs retire I had to select a new primary care doctor. Selected one and was required to go do a meet & greet.

I am 62 and have worked in manufacturing for decades and had numerous taps , cutters , grinding wheels frag and get peppered. Got some shrapnel to the face that drew blood from steel target impacts decades ago.

Meet new doc and I am in good shape , no meds , good BP. He did say " Looks like you have a small cyst on your forehead"  and you should get a surgical consult. It was a small bump that caused no pain but did tend to get irritated from too much sun or wearing a hard had. Met with the new primary doc on a Tuesday , had a surgical consult on Friday and the surgeon shot it up with lidocaine  and cut it out in his office. About 20 minutes and super glued the incision closed.

Lab said it was the typical sebaceous cyst but with a small piece of metal inside. Entire thing looked the size of a marble or 5/8" diameter.
Had it cut out 3 weeks ago and no issues.

If its a cyst the sac need to come out or you will have issues.

Been there done that.  This cyst was killing me with pain.  Went to instacare for it and when taking off my shirt it finally blew open. The odor and contents were something..  bout 9 years ago.  No more since.

I have a few on my back.  I've had them for a long time, easily 20 years.  My doctor said not to worry about them unless they bother me.  Only one has leaked on its own.  I had it cut out but it eventually grew back.  It hasn't leaked yet.  It probably took about 10 years to come back.

Had one in my ass crack I didn't know about. It popped when I sat in a wooden chair and holy hell did that hurt. For the next week I couldn't sit down and kept bleeding/oozing from my ass crack and mega pain. Man it was embarrassing waking up with blood in my boxers and on the bed sheets. My girlfriend at the time kept teasing me that I must of gotten ass fucked somewhere and tore my anus open.

Soooooo who's down for pictures?

Been there, done that. I've had several sebaceous cysts removed. It is possible to have a ruptured cyst not recur if it's cut and debrided and the sac removed that way but just popping and draining it does not work.

They contain various dead cells and keratin. As keratin is fibrous protein it's my guess that it decomposes just like meat, hence the smell. I ruptured one once in a bathroom in my old house and the stench lingered for days. Once you experience it you will never forget it.

Fine. I’ll go there. I had a golfball sized one at base of my scrotum. Went from bump to golf ball in a matter of days.

I screamed in pain for my mommy squeezing the life out of my wife’s hand as the ER dug it out. And that was with anesthetic.

My screaming could be heard through the entire floor. All from an ingrown hair.

I have one on my back. My wife, nurse, saw it one day and wanted to lance it. 1st she put some black tar salve on it. That brought it to a head. Then she gave it a squeeze, and it gushed. She squeezed a few more times and saw the head, and gave it all she had.

It was like a volcano. The head shot up onto the ceiling. She received collateral damage all over her blouse. That is when she began to dry heave and ran to the sink.

It calmed down, but has been flairing up. I plan on having the GP look at it next month.

I have one near my shoulder blade that's completely under the skin, no lump or anything.  Never itches.

Every few years I get a load of sour cream from it.  It's fun to smell.

How on God's great earth did you not know it was there????

I had one on my earlobe that blew it up so big it didn’t seem possible for the skin to stretch to hold that much volume. When it finally popped after a hot hot shower it burst loud enough to hear it pop as it sprayed all over my bathroom mirror. Then came the squeezing out of the rest of it

Has another on my upper inner thigh that came back a year or two later. I think it was mrsa infected before it finally popped. It was huge and painful and would even wake me up at night. That one took several months to pop and several more to fully clear up

I can’t even fathom the possibility of not knowing one was there LOL

Yeah...right.  It didn't.

Told the doc no more bullshit.  I tell you to cut the thing out...cut it out.
