Ordered a new 75 inch Panasonic TV, so I decided to update my surround sound as well (currently 5.2). This is set up in an open floor living room. After considering a better sub, or replacing my LCRs, I think that I have decided to start simple and add a pair of height speakers for Atmos. My Denon supports 5.2.2 (but not .4). 2 should be adequate though: my surrounds are mounted too high out of necessity, so rear atmos wouldn't have much separation anyways. I'm trying to decide the best way to add the 2 height speakers. In ceiling seems like the easy answer, but angled in-ceiling options are limited (not looking to spend a ton for height speakers). It seems that on-ceiling speakers would sound better anyways since they can be aimed directly at the seating position. I have a pair of unused 5.25 bookshelf speakers that I could use, but the wife wasn't thrilled with the idea of black speakers hanging from the middle of the ceiling. This was a surprise, since we are way past an acceptable WAF already with two 6.5 bookshelf speakers on stands, another sitting upright under the TV, two 12" subs, and surround speakers hanging from the ceiling.  Last option (possibly better WAF) would be white outdoor speakers (which is what mmy surrounds are). The B&Ws that I currently have are long since made, so I'd have to go with something different (Polk Atriums or something). What does everyone use for Atmos height speakers? Any budget friendly suggestions? |

I was thinking about upgrading my LCR with the Klipsch RP-8000F and the RP-504C (gen 1s of both are heavily discounted). While this would be a big improvement for music, my current LCR speakers are fine for TV watching, which is the primary use. Still tempted to do it, but I'd probably get more impact from spending the same money on a better subwoofer. |
