The average cycle time for big earthquakes (8+) on the San Andreas fault is 135 years. So I'd say they are overdue. The last one over 6 was in 1906.

Also worth noting that earthquake swarms are often an indication of movement in a magma chamber.

2001, 2009, 2016, 2020 follow that regression and we could be seeing a volcanic eruption within the next 5 years or so.

There was a thread yesterday about a giant crappie caught in Idaho.  Idaho Johnny was mentioned, and come to find out he has moved to southern Nevada.  I wonder how he feels about salt water fishing?

In 1906 an earthquake destroyed San Francisco.  In 1964 an earthquake destroyed Anchorage.

Year and a half ago we had a 7.0 here.  No one died, power was back on just about everywhere by the end of the day, and in less than a week most roads were fixed.  A few homes and buildings were condemned but mostly everything stayed in one piece.

The 7.1 in 1989 damn near leveled San Francisco (again), Oakland, and Santa Cruz.

Granted they tend to build up and not out there, it still seems like they didn't learn much in CA in 83 years, I hope that changed in the last 21.

That's the fun part about living in earthquake country - the big one is ALWAYS coming, and there's not really any way to tell when.  It's true that the media will inevitably latch onto even tiny temblors as harbingers of doom.  But there's still a substantial amount of truth to the fact that The Next Big One really could happen at any moment.  With most other natural disasters, you almost always get SOME warning, but earthquakes really do just come out of nowhere.  The latest media sensationalism is really just a reminder to check your preps.

'THE BIG ONE' OFFICIAL THREAD

https://www.foxnews.com/weather/a-swarm-of-small-earthquakes-in-california-san-andreas-fault-questions

A swarm of minor earthquakes near California's Salton Sea is raising concern about the potential for a larger temblor at the state's San Andreas Fault.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the dozens of tremors began in the early morning on Monday, ranging in size from a 2.6 magnitude quake to a 4.6 magnitude quake northwest of Palm Springs and the Salton Sea.

The swarm marks only the fourth time in almost 90 years of modern seismology records that such an incident has occurred in that part of the Golden State.

The area is overdue for a "Big One." Larger-scale quakes on the San Andreas Fault are expected every 200 years on average, and the southern area has not seen action since 1680 to 1690.

Edit to add 'BREAKING', because it's a pun.

Normally the articles like to be a little sensational, but i kind of think the article linked in the article brushes off a little bit of significant information. It mentions that this is the 4th time that a swarm like this has happened in the last 90 years. Makes you think "no big deal". BUT the real story is that this is the 4th time in the last 20 years. 2001, 2009, 2016, and 2020. Anyone else see a little problem with the gaps between thos occurrences?
