NGNG podcast / yt got blanket sued by GW ltd, apparently didn't send physical mail, sent an email, they basically sue people who aren't there and the sleaze that use this appear to do it hoping their victims don't notice and just get smacked by the courts after the court ruling is done with.![]() Warhammered by GW Lawsuit Apparently because (gasp) he had stuff related to the battletech warhammer going on. morons who came after BT suing BT people when equally vicious lawyers could pursue a case against GW for ripping off stuff from BT (which was in existence before GW). It wouldn't be right but hey, if GW can do it ... man, wouldn't it be great if the people that make these games were humans and not lizard people? The least they could have done was sued CGL over BT gothic. |

Another blast from the past -they did this earlier. IDK if it was the fasa days or the fanpro/wizkid days ... or all of the above, but it was pre-cgl when they last did this.
Oh. https://www.catalystgamelabs.com/news/tariffs-come-down-prices-go-up June, Catalyst Game Labs will be adjusting prices on products most affected by recent tariffs. Our popular Salvage Box products will see a $1 price adjustment. Forcepacks and Box Sets will go up $5. Sourcebooks, for the moment, will not be adjusted—but we may reassess them in the near future.
It may seem strange to announce price increases even as tariffs fall to a less-terrible level than they were only a week ago, so we want to walk our customers through the process for complete transparency. The article Catalyst posted last month about the destructive nature of the recent tariff implementation stands as our overall response—yes, they are a tax on Americans, and why this means prices will rise—and we won’t be revisiting much of that here. We already laid out all the math. Instead, we will underline two important points here: CGL was taxed $240,000 in March for unexpected tariffs.¹ Today’s 30% tariffs create a 10% MSRP increase just to break even.² Despite inflation driving up costs over the past several years, Catalyst has not instituted systemic price increases since Covid-driven adjustments in 2021. We work very hard to keep our prices as low as we can and safely remain in business. This is part of the reason, we believe, why BattleTech and Shadowrun have maintained a high level of customer engagement despite market disruptions (like Covid or tariffs). |
|
Battletech and Shadowrun have "customer engagement" because of FASA's work for years building wonderful worlds, not because Catalyst cranked out another bottom-feeding splatbook that dug into prior books for scraps and scribbled out with unreadable fonts on an unreadable background that White Wolf would've turned down in their heyday of pretentious fonts and backdrops. |

It sounds like it might be mostly bs.

Was coming here to post this. This makes me glad CGL pushed me out for no good reason. I'm already detached. eta: honestly, after seeing that, I think they probably started doing alt universe because they knew they were going to remove their core buyers from the game intentionally with the dumbing down. Megamek had better BRANCH and stick with the old rules, Or we're going to have to curate and stick with the very last version the release that's not polluted by this junk. |
RazörFist@RAZ0RFIST Sep 4 With as many longtime fans as Catalyst have driven away from Battletech - and as few as they've attracted - I wouldn't be surprised to hear their license wasn't renewed when it comes due. (I think last we heard, they inked a "long-term" deal in 2013? Has to be coming up soon.)
Searches here bring up some interesting results: https://tmsearch.uspto.gov/search/search-information Seems we need to start curating and archiving. |
| Oh, so they are pushing the Aurigan Reach into canon in an overt way, rather than going with the implication that, despite all the struggles in the game's campaign....the Reach kinda just fell apart afterwards (as it never appeared on any canonical maps....which means it was too shitty for anyone but the Canopians and Taurians to notice, and had collapsed by the time the Inner Sphere bothered to pay attention to the Periphery again).... |

I swear, I ever win a giant lotto I'm buying Battletech just to write that garbage out of existence. I'll put it in the books as a footnote as some Liao propaganda trying to convince the Concordat that they have aggressive trannies on their border. "It was a faction made to be deliberately insulting to intellect as well as culture, degenerate in a way as to drive a wedge between the libertine Canopians and then freedom loving Taurians. The Maskirovka generated video games, books, and even a short-lived holoshow dedicated to the Audreyloo Supremacy. The disinformation campaign was significant enough to disrupt early settlement and resulted in both Taurian and Canopian expeditions to find the self-aggrandizing fictional house. Accusations within Capellan government that creating a fictional adversary so obnoxious on their own border was detrimental to their own interests were sent to prison camps. The lies became truth enforced by the state. It wasn't until the beginning of the Fourth Succession War when Hanse Davion pledged the Capellan Confederation as a gift for his wife that the Audreyloo Supremacy was fully undermined. A Liao representative, believing he could stall an invasion through words, told attendees that the Concordat and the Audreyloos, despite their conflicts with the Capellans, would stand against FedSuns aggression. The Concordat representative, though only grudgingly in attendance due to national loathing of Davions, guffawed and bellowed 'you dickchopping worms sincerely believe your own damned lies, don't you?' And with that, the fabricated history of the house of Audreyloo was annihilated. The Capellan state, humiliated, promised death to anyone who spoke of the failed ruse again, while the rest of the Sphere viewed it as a sad, pathetic attempt to force relevance where none existed." |

I don't get the hate for the Aurigans. They are basically the Blood Ravens of the BTech setting; created so that the gameplayers would have somewhere to have an adventure without treading on canon events (in 40k, that'd be the codex fluff and the BL fiction). Even in-universe, the place is so shit-tier that the Canopians are the big players pulling strings in the background. When you are the Great Game board for the Canopians and Taurians....you really aren't worth shitting on. I LOL'd at the implication that everything that happened in the game campaign was ultimately pointless, and the Reach was there and gone before anyone who mattered could even be bothered to put it on the map. |

I primarily followed the novel/sourcebook fiction and (to a much lesser extent) the PC games, so I'm fairly detached from the CGL pie fight on the BTech front, but..... ...it's interesting that Rem Alternis came over from the Shadowrun side, where it's been a dumpster fire since the SR4-SR5 jump (CGL's embezzlement fallout essentially chasing all the non-freelancer talent off on financial/they-keep-forgetting-to-pay-us grounds), and basically seems to have engaged in the same foolery as struck Shadowrun....but inflicting it upon a fanbase that's much, much less tolerant of anything of the kind (TT wargamers versus the RPG kidz who play/follow Shadowrun...who have themselves gotten tired of the bullshit, for different reasons*). *-SR players generally wouldn't care if every third SR canon character was suddenly transsexual (hell, there's even canon cyberware for that!)....but the endless and pointless rejiggering of perfectly good rules (to the point that the current fluff is totally incompatible with the mountains of fluff from the 90s) pisses them off (and that seems to be where CGL is headed now with BTech). |

I have seen a constant and mostly ill informed hue and cry for BT tt to retcon and update, and the current CGL crew may be stupid enough to do it. BT is one of the few games with that level of consistency (yeah, yeah, stop laughing yall, and look at how much and how quickly other games of the like and same age change). However, changing the rules introduces serious problems that may cascade: https://battletech.com/forums/index.php/topic,26178.msg591640.html#msg591640 https://archive.is/smOwC CRAY PHT Hey, first of all, thanks for your time & reading this. O0 The question is: What written BattleTech materials are considered canonical and used to form the boundaries in which novelists and sourcebook writers stay? 1) Rules take precedence 2) Fluff and novels are next 3) Artwork is lowest on the continuity food chain 4) Newer material overrides conflicting earlier publications 5) The Line Developer has final say. All hail the Herb. |
| Bottom line is BT and SR have become zombie IPs. Beautiful when they were alive, but now hideously animated with foul means by even fouler people to do their bidding. Now those zombie IPs are often turned upon the very people who loved them in life and remember them for what they once were. |
|
The concept of the text and setting of a game world being "fluff" is part of the problem. Words mean things. You could play a game in the Hyborian Age of Conan with AD&D 2nd editon, Palladium Fantasy, GURPS, or Mechwarrior 2's rulesets and it would work fine. But the game mechanics exist to be in service to the setting. The numbers are there to serve the derided "fluff" and add the flair to the setting. This is the ongoing failure the late stage game designers miss. Originally Posted By darkpaladin1: Bottom line is BT and SR have become zombie IPs. The games rather than be expanded on or give us more characters and backstory, or small campaigns or examples of large campaigns, tend to turn into an unholy mess of stupid fonts and formats that would make White Wolf circa Book of Nod think you've gone nuts. I have every edition of Shadowrun's core rulebooks, and SR1 had issues, SR2 fixed most of it, 3 is playable, and 4 got...confusing, and 5 is a gigantic mess of a college textbook that I really don't feel like ever opening. Mechwarrior 1 & 2 were both great RPGs. Simple systems, enough mechanics to work, reasonable connection to Battletech where the rules facilitate the setting. MW3/Classic Battletech RPG or whatever was a mess of "roll a life path and lose a limb" that added a whole lot of "I'm not keeping track of this". I do like that Battletech did start cutting up eras, though some of the backstory is so heavily written that it takes the mystery out of the big empty space universe. Decades ago I thought Objective Raids mapped too much. Now every planet has a Frommer's Guide. |

That said, the rule of the tt in the quoted thread are the "sandbox" that the writers stay in, though we all know some in the past broke it (looking at stackpole here). Regarding MW3 the rpg ... if you missed it, there's a points buy modification for that in one of the books (I think this one: https://www.sarna.net/wiki/Classic_BattleTech_Companion ). I suspect enough people had essentially your gripe on the lifepaths that they stuck it in the canon (I never played it, but I've read enough to see how bad some of the life paths were .... wow, the poor clan watch characters... LOL!). Having come in at the 90s and such, I'm not cranked off by the filling in ... it just means the GM has to be more creative. "You misjumped and found a cluster of habitable worlds inside a gas cloud" - and the lost worlds that were known but now off star maps, plus the ability to piggyback on the storyline that's written. In some ways it gives you more of a hook. |

WELL, gents. It's been a good run. BattleTech is dead. LONG LIVE BATTLETECH. https://battletech.com/playtest-battletech/ Skip to content PlayTest BattleTech HOME LOGIN REGISTER CONTACT PlayTest BattleTech Home WELCOME TO THE PLAYTEST PORTAL FOR BATTLETECH’S NEW CORE RULEBOOK! Our developers are hard at work on the next core rulebook for BattleTech, which will replace both Total Warfare and BattleMech Manual. Slated for release in late summer 2026, our developers have taken a long look at the lessons learned from the past 20 years of BattleTech gameplay and created a series of proposed rules changes and updates. These updates are intended to emphasize the classic BattleTech experience while smoothing out some of the game’s known issues and building on the easy-to-use rulebook presentation so successful in BattleMech Manual. Over the next few months, we’ll roll out four planned playtest packages for your testing and feedback, with each round running for about six weeks. A special fifth package will run alongside these, offering a look at Battlefield Support rules for Aerospace units. Downloads of each package will be made available below when the round starts. Package details and round start and end dates are listed below: Package 1: Survivability Rules (Starts September 9, 2025, ends October 13, 2025) Package 2: Mobility Rules (Starts September 29, 2025, ends November 10, 2025) Package 3: Gear (Starts October 27, 2025, ends December 8, 2025) Package 4: Missions (Starts November 24, 2025, ends January 5, 2026) Package 5: Battlefield Support: Aerospace (Starts TBD, ends January 5, 2026) [Note: the Battlefield Support: Aerospace rules are a larger set of playtest rules than the other packages, so we’re offering more time for testing.] PACKAGES AND SCHEDULES MAY CHANGE To be clear, no change proposed in the playtest packages is set in stone. The proposed changes selected for these playtest packages were approved only for playtesting by the community and players. While our own internal debate and testing have provided positive results, we want your play experiences to either reinforce or modify our sense of whether a rule update is a good one! EXPECTATIONS To participate in the formal playtest campaign we ask the following of participants: First, when completing the feedback form below, read the questions carefully. The feedback questions for each playtest package will have some similar questions to previous forms, but a few different ones, too. Remember that we’re asking for player opinion based on actual gameplay experience. Second, this playtest series is not looking for responses based on a read-through of the rules text alone, or hypothetical interpretation. The most important data for (or against) any rules change is how well it performs at the table, in actual game play. Submitting your data through the feedback form is the only official method by which data will be collected and measured. Third, playtest campaign discussion best kept to the forum below, which will be monitored by developers for useful insights. But please remember that your experience at the table should be the primary driver of discussion. Game play details or experiences should form the basis for your posts. Please do not submit your playtest results via a forum post. Fourth, please act professionally. This is an official playtest campaign for all players to participate in, an opportunity to be a part of the BattleTech development process in an important capacity, and (hopefully) have some fun in the process. To recap: Playtest BattleTech. Be professional. Be polite. Be specific. Be involved. Have fun. Ten minutes in. Offical annoucnement. They *say* it's not a replacement system, even though it's replacing TW and such, and that he "classic" system will remain in development? ... but they don't need a dumbed down faster system, they already have that in alpha strike. What else *besides* the origina/classic system is this positioned to replace, if anything just by impetus? Also, after rem and crew straight up lying their butts off about taking over fan spaces, I won't for a second think they couldn't just flat out be lying. It's not out of the realm of possibility. ![]() Tuesday Newsday: Episode 61 Their forum for "Feedback" has preset questions to "direct the feedback." Pointers are stating to align. We already see how they handle the official forums and the spaces they pulled hostile takeovers on. xotl: if you want to speak to *us* you have to do it (on their forums). eta: I think they're going to straight up ignore the wider reaction outside of their petri dish forum, and if they don't, it'll likely be to just say we're wrong and call us names. |
|
cahill: "The intention of this is to remove the feel bad moments." ![]() Basically he's saying if it feels random and uncontrolled, it's bad, a he mentions TACs. Ok, fine, apply that equally, everyowhere, aaron, and see what you get. Throw away SRM boats. You'd better get rid of BA squad's ability to hunker in bunkers and hit table saturate you with SRMS and literally shake your pilot to bits. Oh, and you'd better make random headshots effectively impossible. ETC. BattleTech, soon to be replaced wtih "nothing unplanned happens" tech. eta: cahill actually thinks we should by the line that if they aren't changing the record sheets, they aren't changing the game. IDK the guy but he talks like people I know who swear they like a thing but then chime in with a zillion changes they want to it. ie: a fan of battletech just like that guy that ruined he-man was a "fan of he-man." eta2: oh for the love of pete: cahill insults everyone that likes the level of continuity that the BT TT rules has had by trying to gaslight everyone with "but the rules aren't exactly the same." You jerk, that's not what we say or mean. This kind of non-thinking could have them change the hit location tables mechanic, the to hit mechanic, and the PSR mechanics, themselves, and then try and say "but we didn't change it, NYAAAAHHH." It seems like cahill's idea of "classic battletech" is an always changing moving target with no constants, so hey, we can always call it classic, and you have to suck it up and agree with us, because we own it, screw you." |

at around 44minutes in prussian havoc asks "what was the most exciting aspect of getting to reinvent battletech" ... and ... they don't tell him they didn't/aren't reinvent(ing) it. xotl tells him he started a folder in 2018 in expectation of a rework of total warfare. Apparently this mess is xotl's baby. |

They know they're going to get roasted for this, and they're trying to cover their butts with "but it's not exactly the same." Sorry, I listened to how you talked about it in the CGL video with rem and aaron. I don't trust you on this. If it's not a new edition, why wasn't your reaction to being asked what it was like to *reinvent* battletech anything along the lines of "we aren't reinventing it" - not even a little bit of a reaction like that, at all. Instead, an instant reaction of how you've had changes plannned since 2018 so you could - amongst other things - know how to argue over them.

Replying to @TheHappyHereti1 I agree. The hit location changes are meh. They marginally reduce survivability. The ammo explosion rules. They're trying to get rid of the magic BB as applied to really big mechs. Which is no-beuno. Basically they're saying that the ammo loading doors are in the rear torsos, so that's what gets vented out the back. It makes sense. The case II rules are basically what @realbloodydoves has in BTA, which makes those units in his sanctuary worlds really tough. The critical hit rules are a step backwards: roll for crits, if you get crits, roll each one again, and on an 8+ ignore it, then roll which critical you hit. That's more rolls, for no apparent reason. I think its too much of a nerf on critical hits. |

Not mine, not found by me, not someone I know, they posted them in public. Look before they disappear. Click To View Spoiler It's a fairly longish list of equipment changes. |

watchdog CEWS might require some record sheet shenanigans? Oh but I thought you guys wern't going to change those. You pwomiesd. ![]() You guys really REALLY need to check out that spoiler link above. eta: they are planning on changing things JUST because other things in the game are better and changing things JUST because failures with them are punishing. |
A marker to put down to see if it's true or not in the future:

Replying to @Lutra_Gaming Those are set in stone. The book is already printed, they just pretend it is "playtesting" so to ease people in. "Everyone loves the changes" will be the uniting call, and REM will keep saying "Well, BigRed says they are good and he is the only one that matters." Sep 9, 2025 · 10:57 PM UTC |

Absolutely unsurprising.
Minis & Dumbbells@agamelift 1h @catalystgamelab @Topps @Fanatics, are you guys going to continue to keep robin briseno/valk published and going to continue to publish him after his celebratory post over the political/religious assassination of Charlie Kirk? #Battletech #catalystgamelab Bad form for eldon. And he is busily justfying it. https://bsky.app/profile/einherjarvalk.bsky.social https://bsky.app/profile/einherjarvalk.bsky.social/post/3lyiz2aplcc24 Valk @einherjarvalk.bsky.social · 10h
it's true that political violence swings both ways, but it's *also* true that the right has been committing it at the micro and macro level for years now, and Charlie Kirk was at the forefront of whitewashing that violence so forgive me for not having a thought or prayer to spare for him |

They went too far when they tried to kill Trump, twice. The left didn't tone down their rhetoric at all. These governors and mayors spurring on their people to confront ICE, the doxing of federal agents, it's orchestrated to provide confrontation and harm. Remember the shooting of Steve Scalise? What about the multiple Catholic school shootings? Only one side of this nation is shooting the other. This isn't gun violence, it's left wing violence. Sep 10, 2025 · 8:17 PM UTC |

Battltech has been my one love outside of guns, and the one thing that has always been a point of stability in my life over all the years. My friends and I still play games pretty regularly in person, and I do a once a week game on Megamek too... My concern with the rules "updates" is that this is the second step in changing the business model to match Games Workshop, with the first one being the "Battletech Gothic" release to test the waters on grabbing GW fans with a "less expensive" alternative. Time will tell. For 40 years the rules have been basically unchanged, which made for stable gameplay no matter if you had been playing for four months or four decades. But now I suspect we are going to start seeing rules revisions/updates every couple of years so that you need to buy the newest version. I do understand that the original rules set is pretty "grain of sand" detail that can really make games run a long time, but that also is the genius/joy of the game- you have to keep finding ways to stay combat effective even with certain specific systems failing. And the fact that even a 20 ton Stinger CAN take out a 100 ton Atlas with a lucky shot (and a healthy dose of player skill) means that there is always a chance to beat the long odds and makes you keep fighting even in desperate situations. I know me and my friends are going to stick with the OG rules, and we already have plenty of physical copies of those, and we are hoping that Megamek keeps servers available with "classic" rules set, or a Game Options setting to keep it on the "classic" rules set. We have copies of 50.9 on our computers and will set up our own server if need be to keep it going with that rules set. Sven Manticore Arms |

OG Fasa BT and Shadowrun fan. I have most of the FASA boxed sets and sourcebooks along with a fair number of the BT Novels and most of the Shadowrun Novels. I liked BT The best when technology was in the dumpster and salvaging post battle was needed to keep your company intact. The few remaining mech factories were automated and cobbled together and targets for war. |
