Welp...the PLAAF went and done did it!!
They encirceld the Island of Taiwan...with two drones:
Taiwan tracks 36 Chinese military aircraft, 12 naval ships
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   The Ministry of National Defense (MND) tracked 36 Chinese military aircraft and 12 naval vessels around Taiwan between 6 a.m. on Saturday (Aug. 3) and 6 a.m. on Sunday.

Of the 36 People's Liberation Army (PLA) aircraft, 31 crossed the Taiwan Strait median line in the country's northern, central, southwestern, southeastern, and eastern air defense identification zone (ADIZ), according to the MND. Among the 31 PLA aircraft, two Chinese drones circled Taiwan.

That's all the way around with drones that may be able to record RADAR signatures.
So far this month, Taiwan has tracked PLA aircraft 71 times and Chinese ships 36 times.

Not sure what to make of it!

On the one hand, of course it's significant because after all these years, they finally encircled the Island albiet with two drones. Don't know if they were pre-programmed or remote piloted.  But, on the other hand, was this not always within their (PLA) capability???? The Badminton Finals at the Olympics are not today!! Where'd they get the balll to do it today? What used to be a trifle of US resources, but now are significant US military resources, are headed to the Middle East?

Only Kamala Harris can tell us the signficance of this obviously significant action by the PLA that is signifying a transformational and paradigmal shift in significance.

So!
I guess we have to wait and see if any of the higher Army quarterly mags pick up this story as to its relevance.

If Plan A is to refight WWII with the PRC playing the role of Imperial Japan, not only does it show very limited imagination on the part of US planners, but the PLA/CCP leadership have their own plan, and it won't be conforming to US wishes.

The US is pulling a second CSG from the Pacific and sending it to the Middle East.  Once the Lincoln arrives on station to replace the Roosevelt, is the Roosevelt heading back to its home port or back on deployment in the Pacific?  China has to like what’s seeing in the Middle East.

Reuters!!!!!!!!!!!!
They call the people they hire "journalists."
There was no immediate response from the Chinese foreign ministry when asked for comment on the U.S. Navy tender list and Cocos Islands as a possible project.
What the fuck!!! Ain't shit happening except for a proposal on a piece of paper that somehow Reuters always seems to have access to. Amazing coincidences!!!

This is something to watch to see if it develops into anything. Here's the wiki on the coral atolls:

SEOUL, Aug 5 (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the delivery of 250 new tactical ballistic missile launchers to front-line troops, state media KCNA reported on Monday, which Seoul said could be used to threaten South Korea.

The launchers have been described by state media as a modern tactical attack weapon personally designed by Kim and ready to be transferred to Korean People's Army units on the border with the South.

Here's a story about a Chinese "journalist." Get it???? Journalist!!!!!!
Chinese journalist snatches Taiwan artwork from fan at Olympics
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   A journalist from China grabbed a small Taiwan artwork from a spectator during Sunday's (Aug. 4) Olympic men's badminton doubles medal ceremony.

Taiwan's Lee Yang (  ) and Wang Chi-lin (   ) defeated China's top-ranked Liang Weikeng (   ) and Wang Chang (  ). The victory brought Taiwan its first gold medal at the Paris Games.

There have been a series of confrontations involving Taiwanese fans at the Olympics over banners and signage. Taipei's representative in France, Wu Chi-Chung (   ), said the incidents have united Taiwan, per CNA.

A friend of the spectator posted about the incident over Threads on Monday (Aug. 5), explaining the situation. The work was allowed into the venue because of its artistic merit, she said.

A Chinese journalist who had been lurking nearby snatched the Taiwan artwork away after the fan held it up. The journalist had been watching the audience, threatening to "block the view" if the Taiwan flag was displayed.

"It's truly disappointing that the Olympic committee and the host country have allowed Chinese individuals to act so violently and recklessly, even abroad," the post said.

I'm going to go out on another limb here and suggest the speed at which the Ministry of National Defense pumps out the flight trackers isn't based on a deadline, but based on how long it takes for aircraft to clear the ADIZ. In other words, while there may be 24 aircraft involved, it's over a period of hours, and lots of them hours. I also think that the strictly retangular boxes with the two groups of number, then pictographs are the closest a PLAN ship came to within Taiwan, plus maybe time on station. For example, the rectangle on the Right is 4:33PM to 7:00PM at a distance of 105 Km from whatever the name of the city is, and it was a single PLAN ship compared to the left hand side where it was 3 ships sailing from 8:12AM to 4:28PM.

BUT the box created around the median line tells us the same story except this is aircraft. I could be wrong!!!!!!!!!! I'm just looking at sets of pictographs and thinking they don't look like what I've seen on Mahjong tiles!!!

I think, due to the time frames involved, the flights have to be carried out by a couple of planes per sortie, but they keep the sorties going for hours in some cases it's 16 hours, so there's probably big chunks of time when there are no planes in the area.

Taiwan has decided to increase its Defense spending:
Taiwan increases 2025 defense budget by 6%
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   Taiwan announced a nearly six percent increase in its 2025 defense budget on Tuesday (Aug. 6).

To strengthen defense, a new high of NT$647 billion (US$19.80 billion) out of a total budget of NT$3.13 trillion has been approved for next year, per the Presidential Office. "We are determined to enhance our self-defense capabilities and strengthen cooperation with democratic partners to ensure peace and prosperity," President Lai Ching-te (   ) said at a Cabinet briefing on Tuesday.
View Quote

The large boost to defense will allow Taiwan to continue developing indigenous weapons and purchase arms from the US amid the growing Chinese military threat in the region.
View Quote

Despite the larger defense budget, social welfare remained the priority. Lai said the overall budget for long-term care has reached a new high, NT$92.7 billion, to address Taiwan's super-aged society. Additionally, a national childcare plan will receive NT$4.1 billion.

The president said Taiwan's domestic and global challenges are "increasingly complex." Issues such as climate change and the surge of AI technology are not problems easily solved with a single approach. Taiwan must strive for balanced development, Lai said.

An Updates on the PRC's now in effect law as of this June. This was the law that where we're not sure if the PRC will kidnap Taiwanese citizens while visiting foreign countries, so they can try in them in China for "being independent."

We have two stories; first up is the visiting team, the PRC:
China's TAO adds 'Taiwan independence die-hards' page
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   China's Taiwan Affairs Office (TAO) on Tuesday (Aug. 7) added a page to its website listing "Taiwan independence die-hards" including Taiwan's vice president and defense minister.

The TAO on June 21 released "22 Opinions" imposing draconian punishments for "Taiwan independence die-hards" including the death penalty. On Tuesday, a floating popup window appeared on the homepage of the TAO website that reads "Punish 'Taiwan independence' die-hards under the law."
View Quote

Clicking on this popup launches a new page with the same title and the word "Taiwan independence" highlighted in green and shackled with chains. The top section reads "A list of 'Taiwan independence' die-hards."

The list includes current and former top government officials: former Premier Su Tseng-chang (   ), former President of the Cabinet You Si-kun (   ), National Security Council (NSC) Secretary-General Joseph Wu (   ), Vice President Hsiao Bi-khim (   ), Minister of National Defense Wellington Koo (   ), and Deputy Secretary-General of the National Security Council Lin Fei-fan (   ).

It also lists the following current and former legislators: Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Legislator Tsai Chi-Chang (   ), DPP Legislator Ker Chien-ming (   ), former New Power Party (NPP) Legislator Chen Jiau-hua (   ), and DPP Legislator Wang Ting-yu (   ).
View Quote

This list is followed by a section displaying statements from the TAO regarding punishments and sanctions to be imposed on Taiwan independence activists and organizations affiliated with them. Next are relevant legal documents such as the Anti-Secession Law.

A fourth section provides a link to report "clues and crimes" of Taiwan independence activists listed above, while a fifth row calls on the public to report new alleged suspects who have "committed serious crimes." At the bottom of the page is an email address to "report clues."

Taiwan condemns China's guidelines on punishing 'stubborn independence supporters'
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   Taiwan's Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) blasted China's release of an additional guideline on "Punishing Stubborn Taiwan Independence Elements" on Wednesday (Aug. 7).

China is preventing the positive development of healthy cross-strait exchanges, MAC said, per Liberty Times.  Beijing should pursue policies that "are conducive to positive interactions between both sides," it added.

In its new guideline, China listed 10 previously blacklisted Taiwanese, including Su Tseng-chang (   ) and Joseph Wu (   ). Beijing previously issued a document in June listing the legal procedures for dealing with Taiwan Independence supporters. One of the provisions called for the death penalty for those found guilty of "splitting the country." Other punishments include life or fixed-term imprisonment of more than 10 years.

MAC Minister Chiu Chui-cheng (   ) said on Tuesday that China has been waging legal wars against Taiwan since it passed the Anti-Secession Law in 2005. Beijing has no jurisdiction over Taiwanese, Chiu added.

Propaganda Wednesday!!! Olympic Edition!!!!  There's some cool stuff that doesn't have any involvement of XXY chromosomes.

Taiwan flag anthem played in front of Chinese athletes for 2nd time
It's a story that similar to when the main stream media has to cut short an interview when it doesn't go its way!!!!
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   Taiwan's badminton duo on Sunday (Aug. 4) not only captured the country's first gold medal in Paris, but their win resulted in the Taiwan flag anthem being played in front of Chinese athletes for the second time in Olympics history.
View Quote

After a 75-minute battle in the men's badminton doubles finals, Lee Yang (  ) and Wang Chi-lin (   ) defeated the World No. 1 pair from China, Liang Weikeng (   ) and Wang Chang (  ), while Malaysia's Aaron Chia and Wooi Yik Soh took their second-straight bronze. During the medal award ceremony, Taiwan's white Olympic flag rose to the tune of the country's national flag, which was not broadcast in China.
View Quote

In a video, audience members could be seen waving Taiwan's Olympic banner and Chinese and Malaysian flags. France is enforcing a ban on the display of Taiwan's national flag and towels that mention Taiwan at the Paris Games.
View Quote

Coverage of the gold medal match was delayed twice by China's state-run Olympic channel CCTV-16, while other sports channels such as CCTV-5 and CCTV-5+ broadcast footage of other or previous events, per NowNews. Amid complaints on Weibo about the lack of coverage CCTV-16 began broadcasting the match's second game at around 11 p.m.

In the third game, when Lee and Wang won, the CCTV commentator immediately announced that, "The broadcast ends here." Chinese government coverage of the match only lasted about 40 minutes and the awards ceremony was skipped entirely.

Pressure from China has prevented Taiwan's national anthem from being played at the Olympics. Instead, the Taiwan flag anthem has been played, but the lyrics for the song were changed for the Olympics, with references to the actual national flag taken out.

Here's a woman that wasn't identified as a "journalist," but as someone who hands out 'pins.'
Chinese woman seen directing Olympic security to grab banners from Taiwanese
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   Images and videos appeared on Monday (Aug. 5) showing a Chinese woman directing security guards to confiscate banners from Taiwanese fans cheering on Taiwan's badminton duo on Sunday (Aug. 4).

A Taiwanese YouTuber who goes by the handle Pourquoi La France posted images to Threads of a Chinese woman speaking to security guards at the men's badminton doubles finals shortly before those staffers were seen seizing banners from Taiwanese audience members. The YouTuber said the Chinese woman was seen by numerous spectators "dictating the security and volunteers to confiscate all banners 'related to Taiwan.'"

She said the Chinese woman then handed out souvenirs to security and volunteers to thank them for their "cooperation." In a video uploaded to the post, a Taiwanese woman confronts the Chinese woman and asks her what she has just been doing.
View Quote

The Chinese woman said she had just been handing out pins to members of the "Organizing Committee for the Olympic Games." She asked the Taiwanese woman if she wanted one of the pins, but she politely declined and sarcastically congratulated China on winning second place.

Taipei-based policy analyst J. Michael Cole Monday wrote that the Chinese woman was seen guiding security staff on "which symbols of Taiwan needed to be targeted and removed." He described her behavior as "utterly shameful."

Cole added that at least three Chinese nationals were "involved in this casing and identification of Taiwanese 'targets.'"

The man on the left in the photo below was later seen snatching signs from Taiwanese fans at the event. This included signs that read "Let's Go Taiwan" (Taiwan   ), "Tai WAN No. 1," and Bon Courage (good luck in French).

I can’t recall China’s goal number for how many type 076 they wanted by 2030 - I think it was 4 in addition to 8 type 075 but this is all along the lines of what Zoinks posted earlier about China chasing perfection and then my opinion that the clock is running out fir the Davidson window, effects from China’s birth rates after 2030 and Japan’s build up etc. Xi Jingping can only postpone for so long and if China hasn’t learned effective anti submarine and anti air defense from watching Ukraine they’re fucked no matter how many type 076 they have

The problem for e dry one opposed to China/North Korea/ Iran / Russia is they’re all playing catch up so unless China drags things out beyond 2030 we’re behind the 8 ball. Here's an example of a can't understand normal thinking type politician:
Taiwanese politician doubles down on 'pride of Chinese' comment

TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   A Taiwanese legislator who described Taiwan's Olympic gold winning badminton team as the "pride of the Chinese people" defended her comment on Tuesday (Aug. 6), saying that those who criticized her missed the point.

Kuomintang (KMT) Legislator Weng Hsiao-Ling (   ) made the comment after Taiwan's Lee Yang (  ) and Wang Chi-lin (   ) won gold in the men's badminton doubles in Paris on Sunday night. She also described the pair as "the light of Taiwan" in a separate post.

When asked about the comments on Tuesday, Weng defended her use of the term "Chinese."

"From many perspectives, such as history, culture, blood, and others, we are Chinese. I don't understand what is wrong with this," she told reporters in Taipei, per CNA.

This is a very old leftist technique. She is conflating being ethnically Chinese with being a Chinese citizen. Not all Chinese citizens are ethnically Chinese, and not all ethnic Chinese are Chinese cititzens. You would think she understood this especially for being a politician and for the following reason:
The results of an annual study released by National Chengchi University in February showed the percentage of people in Taiwan who identified as "Taiwanese" was 61.7%. The number of people who identified as "both Taiwanese and Chinese" was 32%, and "Chinese" was 2.4%.

Taiwan Army launches artillery exercise in Taichung
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   The 10th Army Corps conducted an annual live-fire artillery drill in Taichung's Daijia District on Thursday (Aug. 8).

The corps' 58th Artillery Command deployed 12 M110A2 self-propelled howitzers to showcase its firepower and training, according to the Military News Agency.

Troops practiced different firing patterns, including firing in waves. After the shooting exercise, the 10th Army Corps commander commended the soldiers for their excellent performance.

The Fifth Theater of Operations, which is responsible for the defense of central Taiwan, set a maximum trajectory height of 1,219 meters and established a danger zone with a radius of 5.55 kilometers.

The drills come as Taiwan seeks to strengthen its defense due to the rising Chinese military threat in the region.

On Thursday, President Lai Ching-te (   ) pledged to improve decentralized command and joint strike capabilities, in particular, to address the challenges of modern-day warfare. "Our goal is to build a formidable military force capable of safeguarding the nation's survival and development, and protecting the lives and property of our people," Lai said.

On Wednesday, Taiwan announced a 6% increase in its defense budget, which will help the nation continue developing indigenous weapons and purchase arms from the US.

One more defense related story:
President commits to strengthening Taiwan's defense
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   President Lai Ching-te (   ) pledged to bolster Taiwan's defense during a military promotion ceremony on Thursday (Aug. 8).

Lai said that in the era of artificial intelligence, Taiwan must strengthen decentralized command and joint strike capabilities, per the Presidential Office. "This is evident from the Russia-Ukraine war and the Israel-Gaza conflict," he said.

The president said China's constant political and military coercion against Taiwan has destabilized the regional situation. By simultaneously boosting defense capabilities and arms procurement, Taiwan ensures its armed forces are well-equipped, Lai said.

"Our goal is to build a formidable military force capable of safeguarding the nation's survival and development, and protecting the lives and property of our people," Lai said. He added that Taiwan will uphold its freedom and democracy and defend its sovereignty.

Lai's remarks follow the announcement of a 6% increase to Taiwan's defense budget for 2025 on Wednesday, reaching NT$647 billion (US$19.80 billion).

Now we have the update we've been waiting for since last March when the Chinese Coast Guard rescued the fishermen when their boat motor conked out in fog!!!
Taiwan ex-military officer held by China returns home
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   A former military officer surnamed Hu ( ) detained by China for nearly five months returned to Taiwan on Wednesday (Aug. 7).

Kuomintang (KMT) Legislator Chen Yu-jen (   ) accompanied Hu's wife and daughter on a boat to China to pick him up at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, per CNA. The family then returned to Kinmen around 11 a.m. via a Mini-Three-Links ferry.

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said during Hu's prolonged detention, the government continuously conveyed its concerns to relevant Chinese agencies through established channels, demanding his safe and unconditional return based on humanitarian principles and the long-standing practice of cross-strait maritime rescue.

In response to Hu's return, the MAC said it was pleased that China "has finally taken action to return Hu safely." The MAC emphasized that after the incident, in addition to requesting the Straits Exchange Foundation to communicate with the Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits to expedite the repatriation of Hu, it also maintained contact with his family to express the government's concern.

While fishing with a friend surnamed Wu ( ) on March 17, the two residents of Kinmen's Jinsha Township encountered heavy fog. When they accidentally strayed into the waters off Quanzhou, China, they were intercepted and boarded by the Chinese coast guard.

Although Wu was soon released, Hu was held by Chinese authorities for allegedly concealing his identity as an active duty officer.

The one interesting aspect about the PRC's "Guam Killer" is that a ballistic missile launch looks exactly like a ballistic missile launch!!! It doesn't matter what the war head is (conventional or nuclear.) It's still a ballistic missile launch.

That will invite the other guys to launch ballistic missiles. I don't think the PRC is going to risk that unless they also attack the US directly as well.

This is why I normally suggest in these discussions that Okinawa is history. Nothing needs to leave the atmosphere to destroy US forces there.

Here's a story for Carmel! More on the Type 076 type amphibious assualt ship - Now with a toilet!!!

China building world's largest amphibious assault ship

TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   China is reportedly building its first Yulan-class landing helicopter assault ship, which is expected to become the world's largest amphibious assault ship upon completion.

On Aug. 1, the U.S. think tank, Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), released a report saying the vessel could be launched as early as the first half of next year. The report highlights its tonnage, which significantly surpasses that of its U.S. and Japanese counterparts.

Referred to in China as the Type 076 landing helicopter dock, it features an electromagnetic catapult system designed for launching fixed-wing aircraft.
View Quote

Article covers some specs:
Satellite images from July 4 show the flight deck of the Type 076 measures approximately 260 meters long and 52 meters wide, covering over 13,500 square meters - nearly equivalent to three American football fields. With a displacement of 50,000 tons, it is substantially larger than the U.S. America-class LHA (45,000 tons), Japan's Izumo-class carriers (26,000 tons), and the Chinese navy's current Type 075 (36,000 tons).

Like other amphibious assault ships, the Type 076 can accommodate dozens of aircraft and drones, landing craft, and over 1,000 marines. Its larger size allows for greater capacity in its internal hangar and more space for takeoffs.

The ship will feature a catapult for launching fixed-wing aircraft, distinguishing it from other amphibious assault ships, which traditionally only launch vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) aircraft like the Harrier or F-35B. While China has yet to produce manned aircraft with V/STOL capabilities, unmanned versions have been tested on China's aircraft carrier, the Type 002 Shandong.

The rest of the article is pretty rah rah rah, so let's get to some thinking instead.

If we recall, the current Commandant of the Marine Corps is getting rid of amored vehicles and other weapon systems, so it can fight on islands and in littoral areas in a war with a near peer such as the PRC. I think that about covers it????

These type 076 amphibious assualt ships seem to me to be the counter to the Marine Corp concept. 3  of these are just juicy targets against Taiwan. However, 3 to 6 of these in hiding around in the lslands to the South could do some damage.

It's Second down and 7.
You make the call!!!!!

Now this one is good propaganda, and it's also great marketing behind a paywall!!! Marketing = Propaganda!!!! Propaganda = Marketing!!!! It's the same thing.

Is there an actual shadow government in the PRC just waiting to take over? Fuck no. It's a story. Look how bad the PRC fucked up Hong Kong and Macau, but they'll get it right this time!! Bull shit.

Here's something they can accomplish though. Simple harassment of an individual:
Taiwan's National Security Council deputy chair files police report for online slander
TAIPEI (Taiwan News)   The Deputy Chair of the National Security Council (NSC) Lin Fei-fan (   ) filed a police report on Friday (Aug. 9) in response to alleged online harassment and slander.

Lin intends to press charges over online posts asserting that he solicited prostitutes and that he is receiving an excessively large salary from the government, reported UDN. The online posts began to gain traction after the Chinese government published a list of "Taiwan independence die-hards" which included Lin, on Wednesday (Aug. 7).

The CCP called for those on the list to be punished, which led Lin to claim the harassment campaign may have been coordinated by Chinese agents.

After the CCP posted the list on the Taiwan Affairs Office website, Lin said he was surprised to read the fake news published about him the following day. A post on the popular Baofei Commune Facebook group alleged Lin had been caught soliciting prostitutes.

Another post from another Facebook group claimed that he was being paid far more than ministers in the Cabinet, despite being only deputy chair at the NSC. The post also alleged the Lai administration had tasked him with managing propaganda operations for the government, per UDN.

In response, Lin said that he refused to tolerate the slander, regardless of whether the posts were made in Taiwan or abroad. He said this was an example of how fast misinformation can spread.

Norway will join the UK's Carrier Strike Group for a major deployment to the Indo-Pacific region in 2025. The announcement was made by the UK's Defence Secretary, John Healey, following discussions with Norway's Defence Secretary, Bj rn Arild Gram, in London on August 6, 2024.

The UK's Carrier Strike Group, led by HMS Prince of Wales, is set to embark on this mission, teaming up with Japan's Self-Defense Forces and other key regional partners. According to the official website of the UK government, www.gov.uk, the collaboration highlights the strong relationship between the UK and Norway and their shared commitment to ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific. Norway, as a NATO ally, will contribute two ships to the group, including a frigate, emphasizing the interconnectedness of Europe and the Indo-Pacific in global security.

We'll need to keep track of this one for next year. I'd be really interested if the British left he Indian Ocean and go throught the Straight of Malacca and into the South China Sea then up to meet the Japanese. That would be something.

Who wants to do a Norwegian Navy female navigator joke???

German state run media really goes out of their way to make sure the German military looks like a bunch of pussies just waiting to be victimized.
Some people only heed the lessons of History the hard way.
