I saw an interesting item on YouTube about extending a network with a single strand of fiber. It was rated at 1 gigabit and was single mode. That makes it half duplex signaling. My thought was, is there a way to do the same thing with multimode fiber and have each direction on a different wavelength for full duplex over one strand? Maybe 10gb over an almost invisible fiber that can be tucked behind room trim and moldings? |

From what I've seen people have good luck with the invisible fiber for interior runs. And yes do you don't need two fibers like an LC connector. I have gigabit symmetrical fiber at home. For years we just had the ONT which was single mode. When they did the install the tech only put the ONT box on like a 4 foot single mode SC cable. I eventually moved the ONT box and bought my own SC cable off Amazon that was closer to 15 feet. Now my ISP gives you the option of putting an ethernet port on the wall or you can pay extra for their router but it's still an ethernet port on the wall. They moved the ONT from being a combo unit (AP/router/ONT) to putting the ONT (card style) in in the wall box outside then just running a short CAT run to the wall plate. The plate has a barrel jack to power the ONT now. Both the combo box we used to have and the new card style ONT in the outside box all run off single mode SC. |

They are called BiDi modules. Each direction uses a different wavelength of light. It is full duplex. They come in 10gig versions too. They only exist for single mode fiber as far as I know. ETA - PON and GPON (think verizon fios) use single fibers as well but its a different arrangement.   Failed To Load Product Data

I needed to extend my network from the house into an attached apartment. My other option was an additional account with my ISP and that's $100 per month. It was much cheaper than I expected. In my wiring closet, I run Cable > Aris modem > Ubiquity wired router > Vimin 2.5 Gb POE switch with 10 Gb SFP+ ports. The POE ports connect to TP-Link Omada access points (not relevant to your situation). I plugged a 50m optical cable with SFP+ plugs into the Vimin switch and had it run through my attic to my office. It comes out of the wall into a Sodola 2.5 Gb switch with 10 Gb SFP+ ports. That switch then connects to everything in my office including my server rack. All from Amazon: Vimin switch ~ $75 (not available currently) 50m cable - $35.99 Sodola switch $49.95 The cable I bought cannot make a sharp turn but it's more flexible than I expected and 150 feet was way more than I needed. I was under $200 for the entire project and it would have been less if I had not required POE. |
