Rather than a code change, that appears to be a result of the emoticon "gif" files no longer using transparency.
Perhaps the files themselves were changed, and the code is still calling the same image asset in the same manner as before?

Emote button. Look at the bottom when making a post, it's right next to submit.

I don't have it on Chrome on my PC, but they've all got white boxes on iOS mobile using Safari.
