Picked up a solid body 79 and found a 78 front end to build a bandit. It was sitting in some guys yard for a few years in primer and the primer started rusting through.
Good things first, it runs and drives, its all there just have to put it together. I have the window sticker, build sheet and its an all numbers matching 403/350TH
Bad things, brakes suck, it has a blockage in the passenger side front, needs wheel wells, need to have the honeycomb rims re done, the interior needs to be redone and needs paint.
I am adding it my stable of American Muscle

Congrats! How do you plan to tackle the rear? Are you going to back date the rear panel or fab up attachments so the the 78 tail lights fit?

Replace that Olds 403 with an early Pontiac 400 .You wont regret it . Check out Butler in Tennessee for drive train ideas . Correctly built Pontiac's dont need Chevy engines to go fast .??????i love me some Injuns.

I think the ‘78 sits deeper into the trunk.  Gonna need the new rear panel and all parts.  Not sure if trunk floor is the same or not.

Hear hear!
400 block, cut down 455 crank. Done before cheap aftermarket Pontiac cranks were a thing.

Brings back memories, that interior shot. Had a 1979 Trans Am. Friend had a 79 Turbo 301. It did not last long and one day he was messing around and threw a rod. Drove mine till it got close to 100k miles on it. Brother in law needed a car so sold it to him for nothing. He drove it for several years after that.

Bonus points for being a 79 and the rear gas door not being crooked and drooping some which was a super common thing. Used to put saran wrap on the edge of the T-top to get it to seal.

Neat. I wish I bought my friends Bandit T/A he sold back in the early 2000's. It was a real 455 car, pristine with flawless black paint. The only issue was it had a Light Blue Screaming chicken T/A decals with the waffle wheels painted light blue instead of the gold..... We called it the gay bandit.

AIR Force fireman I worked with bought one new in 78, the 455 was a dog and even though he babied the car it was still falling apart less than 2 years later. Great movie tho:  "What's she wearing now?"

An OLDS 455 will drop straight in just saying.  And it will do 60 in first gear with the rear end in that car.

The 78 wasn't available with a 455.  You could get a 400 but they were anemic.  A good set of heads, a cam, and an intake would wake them up.  I had a 76 that was pretty strong after the guy before me did the upgrade.

Please tell us you are shitcanning the 403 Olds.

FIL bought a mint 79 back in ‘93. It was a complete turd. My 77 Formula w/ 350 Pontiac made it look stupid slow.

After that I had a 80 TA 301 with a blown engine I put a built 400 in. That car was fun.

I did that to a ‘66 Pontiac Tempest convertible.  And I’ll add that 140 is a comfortable cruise for that 455 as well.

I would love one done in pro touring. Modern electronics, suspension, engine management and horsepower. 700-1100 horsepower with modern handling and traction would be awesome.

I had a 77 special edition Trans AM in mid 90's.  I rebuilt engine, had transmission rebuilt. Had lots of fun working on it, Drove it for a couple years. But it was a Drive, wrench, repeat. I finally sold when I got tired of always having to work on it. It seemed I could never get to paint and body work due to mechanical issues. Not knocking Op's project. I'm extremely jealous. The Bandit run ended here not long ago. Over 100  Trans Ams converged. It was a sight to see.   East bound and down!!!!

The ten bolt lasted about a year and a half.  If I had gone with a 4 speed it probably would have died day 1.
