Domestic spending is out of control. Of course we need to cut it.
Our military presence across the world is what keeps the US Dollar at its current (albeit lower) value. Whether we like it or not, globalism is the current norm...and fiat currency isn't any more valuable than the government's legitimacy. What would happen if we allowed Iran to somehow prevent shipping through the Persian gulf? Palestine or Syria to block the Suez? As soon as the US is seen as being unable to assert power, the trust in the dollar falls. With the threat of BRICS and the Russian/Chinese attempt to back their currency with gold, we need to instill confidence in the dollar. While I'm not advocating a ton of our budget being sent in pallets to other countries...global powers, whether the US, England, the Romans, etc had to spend a large percentage of resources in foreign affairs to protect their "power" |

Oh, and don't look now but the Houthis have done exactly what you fear: They have essentially blocked the Suez Canal to our commerce. Our response was to send a carrier strike force which lobbed a few missiles and launched some desultory air strikes, none of which changed the situation on the ground, all while the captain posted pics on Twitter of sailors eating cookies in his chair on the bridge. Given our performance in the Red Sea, Iran could easily block the Strait of Hormuz tomorrow and short of using nukes we would be powerless to stop them -- regardless of how much we have spent on weapons and military aid. Things that can't go on forever, won't go on forever. Our debt bomb is going to explode someday, and unless we start making hard decisions now it will be worse for everyone down the road. |

Thing is, we're going to make the hard cuts eventually anyway. Our current fiscal path is not only unsustainable but accelerating. There will come a point where just the interest on the debt will exceed all Federal revenues and then we become Zimbabwe.

Lol why. It’s not like when your grocery bill goes up so you have to cut back elsewhere to come out even. We already can’t “afford” the whole budget and haven’t been able to for years, and the rest of the world will have to either not call us on our debt or bail us out eventually anyways, so why not just keep spending?
Free everything for everyone. Free medical care for the 300 pound 96 year olds, free taxidermy services for dead Russians for the ukebros, free Putin fleshlights for the other guys, free menorahs and prayer rugs and platinum memberships for GDers. Why not! |
