Yes, and I charged a Grizzly.
I have seen black bears but never charged one. |

Obviously, Black Bears are significantly smaller, they can look very different physically. Big ears, little ears, long snout, short snout, big jowls, long legs, shorter legs, etc. This is just a few examples.

Considering where I camp, I'd be pretty surprised to see a grizzly.

Neither a Grizzly nor a Black Bear, this is a Chill Bear! Chill Bears like to chill by rivers and watch their friends catch fish. Well known for their firearms safety, the Chill Bear will never touch a firearm, not even a stainless shotgun carelessly left on the ground by a chair.

Quoted: Grizzly bears aren't native to within like 1,500-2,000mi of where I live. I figure I'm safe taking a wild-ass guess that I won't be running into any of them. For black bears I'm comfortable with .357 SIG in the woods, though I'm sure 9mm would probably dissuade an attack. View Quote Somalia is farther than 2k miles from the nearest grizzly! |

I've only ever seen a black bear in the wild once, but, yes. I can instantly tell the difference.
Can't you? |

Having lived in Alaska for over 50 years, yes I can tell the difference!!!!

No brown bears around here so I don't have to worry about it. Most of the black bears here I've seen pics of were very brown. When I still lived in Alaska and saw a lot more of them I think I would have figured it out even though what I saw was 99% black bears. Couple of the brown bears were so fat they didn't even look like most of what you see for stereotypical Grizzly. Black bears always just looked and acted like big dogs to me.

Yes, If I am on the Kodiak Archipelago its a Brown, if I am in California its a Black bear.
