My brother and I used to tune in and listen to the woodpecker signal (Duga Radar) on my parent's old multi-band shortwave radio. (Zenith 7000)

We'd then tell the kids at school the Russians were real and we heard them last night.

Hard pass.

No need to take the tour. Internet pics are just fine for me.

I actually would like to do that.

Going to Pripyat has been on my bucket list for years anyway.
Apparently you can go and hunt the red forest for mutated deer and boars.  My buddy was stationed in kiev for a year..everybody went to see the ferris wheel but him.

I cant think of a place i would rather go than to Pripyat.

Take the rest of my claymores, now is the time to use them.

You could not pay me enough to go there.  As for Russian submarines.  I remember the story of an American admiral who was invited aboard a Russian sub.  He was wearing his dosiometer badge at the time.  It turns out he got a yearly dose in one hour aboard the Russian sub!

I should get into the "anti-radiation" suit business there. You could make a killing off of suckers who have no idea about radiation vs contamination. Oh yes buy this fancy white suit to keep the radiation away, and for only 50 more dollars get this more better yellow one for more protection!

LOL, they aren't blocking anything other than Alpha particles.

Basically they're dust suits to keep the dust and contamination off your clothing.

If alpha particles are all that is there to be concerned with then fine.

So who conducts the tour?

Who makes sure you only spend 5 minutes?

Who makes sure no one puts their balls on a AZ button?

Do they serve snacks? Red Wine?

When I went as a option you could eat at the restaurant that is on site for workers.  The food is traditional Ukrainian and average.  There is a liquor store on site but not sure if tourists can go.  They is usually someone passed out in grass out front that worked night shift and couldn't make it far.

Do it. I've been multiple times (thanks, Stalker). The control room has been "unofficially" open for years if you had the right guides.

Tourist: "But there is 40000 times the normal level of radiation in there!"

Tour guide: "Don't worry comrade, 9 people out of 10 go in and out no problem.

Tourist: "What about the tenth person?"

Tour guide: "Problem"

I’m not trusting the Russians about what’s safe and what’s adequate protection.

They probably reuse the helmets and “protective” clothing.

Kind of a tangent... but if you haven't, you should read "Roadside Picnic". It's what inspired a lot of STALKER.

I doubt any one here could move around in a suit lined with enough lead to be considered a "radiation suit". Most likely they are getting a russian version of anti-contamination clothing and hopefully a HEPA filter full face mask.

Chernobyl is one of those subjects that absolutely fascinates me, but I'd rather indulge that fascination via YouTube and other documentaries.

I've already beaten skin and testicular cancer and have no desire for more potential medical issues.

Probably around 2.5 mrem/hr, roughly. So like a chest xray an hour. They probably have the control room deconned pretty good, the ppe is probably more of a precaution

Relax after the tour in a hot tub heated by spent fuel rods from Fukushima.
