Inside the Xiaomi EV Factory: A New Car Every 76 Seconds!

I hate when someone says something like every 76 seconds. It just means they complete one every 76 seconds, if they have 10 lines it means each line is once every 760 seconds. It ignores the fact that there is probably 200 hours ( ok maybe 200 mins ) in making each individual set of parts. Lets go back to the if they have 10 lines, that means each part is put on in less than 76 seconds per line. But if there is a part that takes 152 seconds to make, they need twice as many lines to make them fast enough, or 20 lines for that one part.

You could build cars the 1980's way and make one every 76 seconds, you would just need like 100 lines running.

So do they just park them in an empty lot? They don't sell a car every 76 seconds. Is this like their ability to build high rise buildings at breakneck speed but a large number are comoletely empty and sometimes fall over?

They are getting somewhat popular here in Mexico.  The big problem though is lack of spare parts and dealer support.

Do they build good E-cars?  I recall many issues with rust & inconsistent build quality.

Still, the video tour of the plant is very impressive.  Also looks like they ripped off Tesla, looks like a cross between the Model S and 3.

That is a weakness that China needs to address if they want to rule the world. We had a line of ships from our harbors to Europe and Asia during World War Two delivering supplies to our people and allies. China has issues with that.

They still make a good car though.

I really doubt anyone here thought there was some long assembly line that, by the end of it, a finished car rolls off 76 seconds later.

But I dunno, it’s a big membership here, assuredly some of them have significant brain damage.

NO THEY DO NOT BUILD “VERY GOOD” CARS OF ANY TYPE.

Chinese EV’s have lots of glitzy features, but that does NOT  translate to well built cars.  Do some research on actual Chinese EV failures.  They are dramatic, and certainly not of Tesla-level quality and safety.

That's pretty standard if they are low/mid option complexity.

50-100 seconds is pretty common.  All really determined by the factory/model.

This.  They don't have one line, that popping out one car every 76 seconds. That mean that every stop/operation (interior install, drivetrain install, paint, finishing/touch up) could not take any longer than 76 seconds...which is impossible.

Depends entirely on the process for sure but this also gets handled by shift schedules and buffers.  Paint generally always has more shift time than anyone else.  They also have really long buffers, along with engine lines.

Edit: At 76 seconds they have more than 1 "Finish" line too for sure.

I'm more concerned about how fast they'll be able to produce ships, combat aircraft and other war materiel.
They'll turn all that production capability into tanks and bombs while our factories will grind to a halt from red tape

800,000 F-150's sold per year.
8 hours in a shift * 60 minutes per hour * 60 seconds per minute = 28,800 seconds per shift
240 work days per year with most manufacturers * 28,800 = 6,912,000

6,912,000 working seconds per year / 800,000 F-150's per year = One F-150 rolls off of a line every 8.64 seconds.

If they run 2 shifts per day, One F-150 every 17.28 seconds

If they run 3 shifts per day, one F-150 every 25.92 seconds

Multiple plants, number of shifts, etc......

BYD is legit, and probably has less warranty issues that Tesla does.  BYD has been a lithium battery manufacture for 30 years.   They would absolutely dominate the market in the US if we let them in.

This. Once they’re rolling, they might get one off the line every 76 seconds, but it probably took HOURS to get there.

If my math is right that's 1184 cars a day or 432 million a year. At $15k each that's 6.4 billion dollars.

So in just over two years they can build a car for everyone in China.

Plus if they make them cheap enough most people could afford one.

In 13. 8 years they can produce a car for everyone on the planet.

Since BYD is a Chinese company bound by the National Intelligence Law, the Chinese government can legally compel BYD and other companies (e.g. Huawei) to hand over corporate data or records. In the US, a judge would need to approve this, so there is a layer of checks and balances.

In other words, we need the government to protect ourselves from an adversarial government.

These are EVs too so you can typically build them a bit faster than ICE vehicles.  I think Tesla is 50ish seconds depending on model but next to zero complexity from an option standpoint.

The Chinese shit out out nuke, coal and solar power plants like we gobble Big Macs. On just solar, I've seen video of a mountain range clad with solar panels...it looks like depictions in Star Trek of the Borg home world. They make a lot of electric power.

They are also tooling up to store a lot of power. Their largest Lithium battery company is transitioning to sodium based storage. From what i understand, the sodium tech is not as energy dense as lithium base, but will be cheaper to mass produce. Also works better in weather extremes.

Asked Grok about Tesla….

“How often a finished car rolls off the lineThe fastest current plants are in the 30–45 second range per vehicle on a given line:Giga Shanghai (Tesla’s most efficient factory) produces a vehicle roughly every 30–35 seconds. Tesla has described it as about 30 seconds; Tesla’s VP of vehicle engineering put two Model Y lines closer to 35 seconds. Older Tesla material cited under 40 seconds.

Giga Berlin has been cutting cycle time from ~80 seconds toward 45 seconds while pushing weekly output from under 6,500 toward 7,500 vehicles per week.

Those are per-line rates. Tesla runs multiple factories in parallel, so company-wide the average is slower. In 2025 Tesla built about 1.65 million vehicles — roughly one car every 19 seconds if you spread production across the whole year. Q2 2026 production was 451,758 vehicles (~1.8 million annualized). “

I've often said that Democrats are the only reason to vote for republicans.

I believe I read somewhere that Chinese vehicles are taking a bit of a chunk of the market in the UK.  Almost 15 percent and they have outsold the Japanese cars.   But I don't think there are any British owned car companies anymore.

I just came back from spending a week in Beijing.  I was driven in all manner of EV cars from BYD's to ONVO's.  The ONVO I can speak more to since it's a direct copy of a Model Y.  Like most Chinese knockoffs, it all looks good on the outside.  It's when you take a closer look that differences emerge and the difference becomes striking.

The software shows just how big the divide is between Tesla China and the rest of the Chinese domestic EV's.  Tesla software is smooth, meaning the navigation is smooth on the screen.  The ONVO looked like a laggy video game...herky jerky with bad FPS.

The materials inside the car were not as high quality as the Tesla.  Like knockoffs, they were 85% of Tesla.  The one  cool thing about ONVO is that you can get the whole battery switched out at their service centers in like 3 minutes vs charging the battery....that's kinda interesting.

Oh, I also saw a fender bender between a BYD and some other EV.  One driver who was not paying attention rear ended another.  The person who got rear ended looked had a pretty damaged bumper...was kinda weird since it was at a stop light and the guy who rammed him wasnt going that fast.

There's no doubt that Chinese EV's are not junky things like the Vietnamese electric cars, but they are not as good as Tesla's.  Tesla may only represent less than 10% of the EVs in China, I think it much higher in the strictly everyday consumer market amongst people with high incomes.

Think of this very similar to CF-Moto in the sport, bikes and rec vehicle space. They started out as junk, progressed to a little better than junk and now are on pay quality wise with Polaris/Can-Am. Parts availability is still an issue but at the price point they sell at, many times they undercut competition by 40% or more.

They probably would destroy "the big 3" in short order but something does need to be done to re-vamp auto manufacturing here. Not to mention EV's are really here to stay and will increase market share as fuel costs stay high and the charging infrastructure grows. Scoff at EV's all you want but there's a huge market for inexpensive, simple commuter EV's that would be cheap to run/maintain.
